I'm trying to stay out of that book recommendation thread, but I don't know how much longer I'm going to make it. I'm trying to turn over a new leaf of a kinder, gentler bigd, not ripping people for reading Dan Brown, but it's hard, oh is it hard.

Ohhhh...you're not going to like what's being recommended. Sample: the mood is such that I suggested someone read Elmore Leonard.

MBV are performing some shows in England.

If they do any kind of semi-extensive reunion touring that gets them to this continent, we should all meet up in Chicago/New York/whatever and see them

Best FYP I've seen in quite some time. Well played, IceBearWang.

Today has been a mix of stuff. Listened to a soul/R&B station on Pandora for awhile, so I got an earful of Aretha, Wilson Pickett, David Ruffin, and the like. Then I switched to the iPod and put it on shuffle, so I've gotten some Okkervil River, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Spoon, Iron & Wine, Pedro The Lion, and some Murs so far. Can't really decide on any one thing in particular to listen to.

I downloaded it, but haven't really listened yet. The song they had on the Pitchfork playlist -- "Is there a Ghost in this House" I think it was -- was a really good listen. If mk reccomends, I shall listen. I liked their first album. Nothing special, but a fun little indie-guitar listen.

I finally decided to pin my ears back and listen to some Aesop Rock. I've started with Labor Days. This okay? Or should I begin somewhere else? I've heard his stuff before, but not really.

I'm working on a theory that Aes is actually the Pope, and that's why he's so infallible. It's not a strong theory. Labor Days is probably his best LP, but I think Daylight EP is my favorite thing he's done.

Do you guys think that during Reckoner that when Thom is singing "Because we separate like ripples on a blank shore" they're saying "In Rainbows" in the background? This could be something that was obvious to everyone, and I was just completely oblivious but maybe not.

I spent most of the day broadening my horizons by listening to Aesop Rock's Labor Days and a little of Burial's Untrue. Not sure what I think about dubstep yet, in general. I'll admit I'm intrigued.

Aesop seems to be... a lyrical genius. I've heard his stuff before, but never really paid attention. Kinda one of those, "I'll come back to this later" things. I remember enjoying the song "Daylight," but now I... well, I really really enjoy it, as well as the rest of the stuff. It's kind of overwhelming, because the music and lyrics are kind of dense/fast, some of it goes by so quick I don't really catch it.

Life's not a bitch life is a beautiful woman
Your only call her a bitch because she won't let you get that pussy
Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests
Or maybe you're just an asshole who couldn't sweet talk the princess

Haha, that's awesome.

Yeah.

And I just listened to Reckoner (without changing the EQ on my iPod, because I'm lazy) but I'm not sure if they're moaning "Iiiiiiiiiin Raaiiiiiiiiin Boooooooows" or not, but I think not. I remember listening to that song 10 times on repeat when I spent all weekend stoned, and I feel like I would've caught that.

I did, however, decide that when Thom sings:

"This is one for the good days
and i have it all here
In red, blue, green
Red, blue, green"

that he is referencing the colors of component cables. Videotape. Recording equipment. Red, blue and green component cables.

There's a reason I don't smoke very often.

On that EP me and bigkg talked about, that song is followed by a counterpoint, "Nightlight:"

"Life's not a bitch, life is a beotch

Who keeps the villagers circling the marketplace, out searching for the G-spot

Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests

Or maybe you're just an *******... maybe I'm just an *******"

Mother-fuck my cunt off; Tom Waits is sick-awesome. After Rain Dogs, what's good?

Also: Arcade Fire. Has anyone heard their first EP? I just found out it even exists, but I'm still Tom Waitsing, so I haven't spun it yet. Any good?

In regards to Waits; I also like Swordfishtrombones and Bone Machine. I haven't really heard much besides that.

The Arcade Fire EP is ****ing awesome. Seriously, the song No Cars Go was the song that made me fall in love with them.
Dirtydutch
Any guitar players in here? I have a pretty disturbingly sick axe collection (I hesitate to list many of them because their cost is almost embarrassing), and I made a sick grab at a yard sale today: A Seafoam Green '62 Airline Res-o-Glass, for $35. The case is trashed, and the knobs are after-market and stupid-looking, but the pickups are original and it sounds unreal. (Most people probably don't like the sound, but I've been shifting focus to weirder, rarer makes, because Fenders and Gibsons have gotten pretty pricey.)

Edit: I think this paint job is after-market, too, and it's not great. Still...

Oh, Ox, I forget about that one. I was in love with that, early in my rap transition.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Guitars: I have somewhere between 30 and 40, now, largely inherited or traded for another I inherited. It's mostly Gibsons; Les Pauls and hollow bodies, all good stuff. My absolute favorites are my 1960 ES-335 and a fairly new ('00s) Les Paul Goldtop with P-90ish custom pickups. Both are below median, value-wise, but they sound better than their sexier siblings.

I only have one Fender, which I bought somewhat recently, and don't play.

Oh, wait, I forgot: my late '60s Hummingbird is my favorite favorite.

Huh. I can understand this; I can't listen to the Shins anymore, almost solely out of semi-unconscious spite, despite liking them on a vary conscious level. Luckily most of my adjacent hipsters (I live 3 minutes from Little Five-Points, which is ATL's douchiest hipster community) are such shitty, solely aesthetic hipsters that they don't ruin much of anything I like; they all secretly watch MTV and profess Death Cab for Cutie their favorite band.
Dirtydutch
Dutch & Tom Waits update: I've listened to Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones and Mule Variations. All three are incredible. Mule Variations in particular has potential to be one of my favorite records ever.
