I actually listened to Joy Division on Saturday/Sunday, and then listened to a lot of the Pixies/Cure/etc. the rest of the day Sunday. I had an 80s weekend (inspired by the sudden interest everyone has in Joy Division), and now it will be an 80s week because I enjoyed it so much.

I like Unknown Pleasures more than Closer, but I think I'm in the minority. As far as songs go, my personal favorite has always been "Insight" (from Unknown Pleasures). "Heart and Soul" is a great track, too. Either way, both albums are incredible, and -- though I hate abusing cliche -- they sound WAY ahead of their time. I always forget those albums were made in the late 70s and early 80s respectively.

You should really listen to Surfer Rosa by the Pixies, too. Great guitar-rock album that is remarkable because so much of the music I listen to nowadays sounds EXACTLY like this record made in like 1987.

Speaking of which, would somebody (I'm looking at IVPro) mind making a two-disc "ESSENTIAL 80s FOR THE HIPSTER" mix? I think that'd be awesome. Somebody hop on this, please?

I think if I were making a mix entitled "ESSENTIAL 80s ROCK FOR HIPSTER FAGGOTS (THIS MEANS YOU!)," the opener would be "Where is My Mind?" by The Pixies. I've used that song on so many mixes that every girl I've ever dated has every lyric to the song memorized.

Also, every time I listen to the Pixies I think of a new band that has so obviously lifted their style. God, it feels like half of Built to Spill's catalogue can be traced back to "Where is My Mind?"

So did Slanted and Enchanted.

My 80's mix would probably consist of things from the Smiths, Sonic Youth, Jesus and the Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr., Talking Heads, R.E.M., Pixies (Where is my mind?, obv), Violent Femmes, Tom Waits, and other obvious ones I'm forgetting. Could also throw in some Cocteau Twins, New Order, and The Replacements. Probably forgetting a ton, but that's where I would start.

Don't talk about it, man. Just do it. The little Galaxie 500 I've listened to, I've liked. They've always been one of those bands I randomly think, "Hey, I should download some of that" once a month, but never do.

And don't worry about being off by a year either way. All of Joy Division's music -- even the stuff recorded in 1979 -- should count for 80s music. Same with MBV. Loveless has always felt like a late-eighties record to me, even though it came out in the 90s. It's the spirit that counts. No rules, per se.

If I did have to suggest a rule, however, it would be that "Where is My Mind?" appears on every mix.

Then get after it son. Sounds good to me so far. Take an hour, put together 20ish songs, think about it for 24 hours, then make a final 2-disc list.

I think this idea has legs. I'm just excited to hear what IVPro has to say. Anyone wanna lay odds that his mix will just be "The Queen is Dead" on one disc and "Strangeways, Here We Come" on the other?

You are. I got really REALLY high once in Evanston, IL when I was partying at Northwestern for Dillo Day. I had no idea what was going on -- I was CRIPPLED stoned -- and when we wandered to the park at night to see the show, it was Blackalicious on stage. Seeing "Alphabet Aerobics" performed live whilst so high you spend at least 3 minutes trying to remember "which one is right and which one is left?" is an experience. A very, very cool experience.

I didn't know my Smiths fandom was that see-through. I'm wondering if you're thinking of that dude Iveyfan, who had a Smiths avatar for the longest time, though I am also a big Smiths fan, and a fan of the 80s in general.

I'm gonna have to put some thought into this one. I have a weird variety of stuff running through my head, like how to fit Black Flag, Devo, and Boogie Down Productions onto this mix. I think I can make it work.

Some facts:

The Pixies are ****in' awesome.

Joy Division is ****in' awesome.

The Knife (yeah, I'm just getting 'round to this one) is ****in' awesome.

And, most of all, relistening to Kid A, it's pretty clearly the best album ever made. Seriously, all other music is sad and stagnant, and most of it should be burned.

MK, I recall you're some type of digital musician. I'm going stir-crazy, lately, with nothing to do, and decided to misdirect my talents and energy into poorly constructed, home PC-made, sample-based hip-hop beats, instead of working or stimulation any kind of interhuman relationships.

Any good books, forums, articles or programs you recommend? How important is it that I buy any sort of additional, external equipment, to start?

I stole/installed Fruity Loops (7.0), but I have no idea how to use anything, and don't want to put in the time if it's not a good program to use.

You can do a lot with a little these days. FL is totally, totally fine. A lot of snobby music people would rip on you for using it, but F them. It does exactly what you want sequencing software to do and more, so I never got the 'FL is gay' thing. It's quick and easy to use.

Other stuff you'd probably be interested in ganking: Ableton Live, which is a really great program to use for beat making if you're going to be using a lot of samples. And then you'll want to get a good wav editor like Sound Forge so you can manipulate samples quickly.

I don't have a great place to point you in terms of learning how to use this type of software, but I'm sure with a little noodling around you'll start to get the hang of it. The only audio forum I spend time reading is gearslutz (http://www.gearslutz.com/board/). Like any forum, you get a lot of noise, but there are a some big boys who post there as well (ppl like Bruce Swedien, who engineered for the Basie band, Quincy Jones' productions, including MJ's stuff; Rob Schnapf, who's produced Beck and Elliott Smith among others; Kevin Killen, who engineered the good Elvis Costello and U2 records; world class mastering engineers like Bob Katz and Chris Athens; the list goes on and on). There are also a lot of good articles to read at the Sound on Sound website (http://www.soundonsound.com/). It all used to be free, but now you have to pay for a lot of it. That magazine is always worth checking out; it can be found in any major bookstore.

As for additional equipment, you'll want to get a decent sound card that has 24-bit capability. After that, it just depends on what you want to be able to do. If you want to be able to record audio into your pc, you'll need a decent mic pre and mic. I remember that you play piano, so you'll probably want to be able to record direct. You might want to buy a midi controller (if you don't already have a sufficient electronic piano/keyboard) so you can record midi data. This way you can actually play basslines and what not instead of just programming them.

Ahhh there's too much to try to explain. Once you start trying things, I'll be happy to answer any questions that come up.
Dirtydutch
Awesome; that pretty much all I was looking for.

I'll probably ask about samplers, later, but that's good for now. I'm off to the FL forums to ask about books (I'm a huge nerd).

(Also, I'm not sure how I'm just getting 'round to the idea of digital recording; I've played guitar and bass since I was 10, am competent at both, and I've played piano since I was 6, at which I'm really pretty good. And I'm on a computer all the time...yet now that I'm into hip-hop -- a genre of which I have no technical knowledge -- is when I decide to start spend time and money. I'm truly a jackass.)
