I just relistened to Pharoahe Monch's record from earlier this summer, and have to reevaluated my stance. About a month before it dropped I heard it and would've given it about 75/100. Now I'm giving it a 90something, and it's solidly my favorite hip-hop album this year. I don't xnow how it flew under my radar like that. I'm going to play it again, now.

About once a month I leave my house wearing a stylish pair of jeans (inherited from my younger brother), a Dinosaur Jr. t-shirt, and a black blazer/sport coat. There's really nothing more alternate and hip.

Is there?

Hey, my friends just gave me a few albums by this great band that I've just heard of. They're called Radiohead. I really like that Paranoid Android song. Anyway, you can read all about them at this website. It's really cool and has lots of great music on it:

Also, I hate DMB.

Do you also have an iPod, big retro headphones and a messenger bag? If you need a bag, the army gives them away. I've gotten 17, and there's no slowing me down.

When wearing my Dinosaur Outfit (so named because people always expect something so much different) I ALWAYS wear my iPod. And the guy I live with has gigantic DJ headphones, so I'll have to start wearing those. I always thought wearing an iPod with iPod headphones was pretty mainstream-alt, but I'll try your idea. As far as the messenger bag goes, yes, I do own a single-strap backpack. Don't worry, it was a gag-gift. I also have a pair of glasses ripped right from Rivers Cuomo's FACE.

These are actually really good, sound-wise, for the price. I love my Tri-Ports, but they're over-priced and break if you look at them funny (when I say "look at them funny," what I really mean is drop them on concrete pretty consistently). I barely notice the difference in sound, and these are pretty sturdy, so if you're looking for a good pair for under $50, I like these, and that's before you factor in hipster appeal.

Anyone know if Edan is planning to make another record?

Also, anyone else hear Percee P's album? It's pretty good; not great. If you like non-stop boastful flow, check it out.

According to his myspace page, not for six-to-eight years.

I sure hope so. I've made a few of my hardercore African-American friends listen to him, and they all really enjoyed him. And then I told them he was white. And, I think Jewish.

They didn't like him anymore. They are more racist than me. At least I'll admit I can't stand listening to DMX because he's black.

I thought he was black for the longest time, never bothered actually seeing if it was true because I was so convinced of it.

My personal favorite of all-time is "Richard D. James Album" by Aphex Twin, I feel like mk should be the one to put this list together, though.

I already asked him to in another thread. I'm on the edge of my seat.

Also, I have that record, though I'm yet to play it. It's hard for me to get into music I'm not familiar with. Any favorite tracks to start me off?

Also, again, is Aphex pronounced A-fex, or A-pex?

I've always pronounced it like A-fex.

Some of my favorite tracks would be:

4, Fingerbib, Yellow Calx

I don't know though it's one of those albums where I don't really see it as individual songs, it's an album. If that makes sense.

No one is being a smartass about your taste in music. This is like the only thread on the forum where people aren't assholes to each other, and the people on here who listen to this kind of music are some of the smartest on the forum, so take your stupid little digs elsewhere. I don't mean to be an ass about it, but flaming each other about our taste in something subjective isn't going to get us anywhere, and every time someone starts coming around and telling people their music sucks, it ruins the thread for like 50 pages.

It's not a sensitivity issue, it's just that this is the one type of thread where fighting really is a waste, because there really isn't a way to be right. Anyway, your reaction was so classy that you're more than forgiven.

Endless Summer by Fennesz has been playing a LOT for me lately, or I guess over the past year or so. The song "Year in a Minute" is enchanting.

Thanks, I honestly was not trying to be a dick, just mildly funny, and whiffed and I understand what you are saying about this thread.

For whatever its worth though, the only two types of musice that I cannot listen to are techno/electronica and country. I listen pretty much to rap and old school R&B.

I've been listening to Ricardo Villaladofjadofjalobos's Acsho for most of the day, and I think I really like it. I don't know what this kind of electronica is called -- I want to say it's something like minimalism -- the structure and progression is awesome. Plus, as mk said in another thread, some of his stuff is really hot.

I dunno if it was ever mentioned in here, but I came across this while looking up info for Lupe's next release. Apparently Lupe, Kayne and Pharrell are hooking as a group called Child Rebel Soldier.

Looks like Lupe's The Cool is scheduled for Nov 20th, the first single is up on his website.

labels are kind of silly to me, especially when it comes to electronic music. you can just subdivide genres ad nauseum, or on the other hand there are a lot of people who just label "good" electronic music as 'IDM' and everything else as 'house' or 'techno'. truth is, there's a lot of good 'techno' and a lot of shitty 'IDM', but i digress. i most often hear villalobos referred to as 'minimal techno'. but yes, certainly 'microhouse' or 'critical beats' would describe his music as well.

I only plan on using these types of genre names while squinting, as a joke. I honestly don't understand what the difference is betwixt techno, house and electronica, let alone the rest of those things. I'm pretty much just listening to things that sound neat to me, at this point, and calling it "electronia," for lack of education.

See, I like having the labels right for a few reasons:

1) I like being able to describe music to other people, and -- short of humming it really REALLY intensely -- labels do this the best. It might mislead people to a degree, but it's nice to be able to communicate in broad strokes with people who have varying commands the the vernacular.

2) By the same token, if I become a fan of the genre, I'll read reviews, and I'd like to know what people are talking about. Kind of like being the person communicated to in the previous bullet.

3) Once I realize what I'm looking for and what I enjoy, I can have a dialog with mySELF about what I enjoy about the music and its various components. This is generally easier for me if I can describe it accurately and succinctly.

There are other reasons, too, but I've never been one of those "Labels are baaaad, mannnnn" kinda guys. They serve a valuable purpose for me, and I'm not concerned with pigeonholing artists or whatever. But now when I ask mk for a recommendation, I'll be able to tell him I like the "microhouse" type stuff, or get excited if he uses another buzzword I fully understand. Accurate labels simply make it easier for me to communicate.

Faggots.

Nah, I play up your image as an elitist prick, but I'm pretty sure I've got a more accurate of who you are, at least as a music fan, and even as a person. It's just more fun to pigeonhole people, and describe them as caricatures.
