Man, this thread is gay this week.

The Unicorns, again. (Nice call, Wang.)

"Th' Corn Gangg is an indie pop/ hip-hop band from Montreal, Canada. The band was founded by Jamie Thompson and Nicholas Thorburn as a direct off-shoot project of The Unicorns several months prior to their December 2004 break-up, but prior to the formation of Islands by those same two musicians.
Th' Corn Gangg was involved with several projects with Subtitle, Busdriver, and Vic Booz playing several shows and remixing songs such as the North American Hallowe'en Prevention Initiative's single, "Do They Know It's Hallowe'en?" and Islands' "Rough Gem", but has not yet recorded an album.
They are important as a curious bit of history between the end of the Unicorns time as a band and the beginning of Islands, the now functioning post Unicorns band. The time spent with Th' Corn Gangg can clearly be seen in Islands' brief foray into hip hop halfway through the song Where There's a Will There's a Whalebone, a song originally performed by Th' Corn Gangg.
Recent interviews have indicated that Th'Corn Gangg is still an active project, despite Thompson's departure from Islands. "

im not sure if their songs are available anywhere but i just thought since youve been raving about both busdriver and the unicorns it might be a nice find.

I just started listening to Caribou -- I downloaded The Milk of Human Kindness as well as Andorra -- and it's sweet. I've had those two discs on loop for the past 72 hours or so.

I got the new Kanye now, on my second listen and I think this is his worst release. It's still better than 85% of other music getting put out, but this one seems really up and down and not as consistent as his previous releases.

Bad news bears. This is why I'm glad that I buy all my music on CD's. I like to at least have something tangible, something that I can display on a shelf or whatever, and something that can't be deleted.

There must be a way to keep your music, though. Talk to a smart techy guy before you reformat and see what he has to say (if you're not one yourself, that is).

I've been thinking of ways to do that but I realized I'm retarded at these things and none of my ideas would work. I backed up my entire computer about a year ago in case something like this ever did happen, so I should have a significant chunk of music, but also a significant chunk gone.

What did you backup onto? Do you have an external drive you can use? Have you tried restarting in safe-mode and backing up from there?

Well when I first got my computer (an HP) I was asked to make backup disks by the computer, so I backed up my entire computer onto like 6 DVD's (which I left at home accidentally). So I'm waiting for those to come in the mail, and I'm afraid that if I tried to put them on an external hard drive the virus could spread onto it (at least that's what my dad told me), and I don't know what restarting in safe-mode is, so no I haven't thought of it.

No idea, since I lived in the dorm last year we were all on the same network, but I knew of a lot of people that did it anyway. I did it all year and was fine, then literally the last day of school I got an email from administration saying they caught me downloading an episode of Entourage of all ****ing things. I took some quiz about pirating which basically consisted of "Is downloading copyrighted material legal? Y or N" so I did that, but my next offense I could face disciplinary action through the school, then any further offense I could face legal action. Whatever, I'll just have download a shit ton of music whenever I go back home.

My dorms had a T1 connection back when Napster was in its heyday. Too bad that harddrive of mine crapped out. Also it sucked for the suckers who the year after and had major restrictions on bandwidth.

So, basically I'm not listening to anything at the moment. sorry. I know you're hugely disappointed. Well actually I listened to the track Distinguished Jamaican English by Phi Life Cypher the other day. I don't remember why I just listened to one song or that track specifically, but whatever. No one read this far anyway.

My Music folder

Maybe look for strange files, but I've never heard of a My-document backup spreading a virus. The only way I'd be worried is if it were someplace weird in program files.

You could also scan that folder specifically for viruses (I assume you have some kind of program) -- but also remember, the worst thing that can happen is after a day or so you realize that you have to do it again, and since you won't've had long to accumulate flies or anything, it'll be no major deal. And I've never heard of that, anyway. Just a thought.

It's a classic.

I'd like to thank Wang for assisting me, last year, in even recommending it.

I'm listening to Stillmatic. I love a lot of gangsta' rap and poverty-based hip-hop, but Nas is the only person who makes me wish I were from a horrible housing project, just so I could be as cool and smart as him.

Hmmmm. I don't know... more influential than Wu-Tang? Wu-Tang is everywhere. I do love OutKast though.

I've listened to Graduation a couple of times now, and I just don't know how much I like it. There are some really good tracks ("Champion," the singles, and some others), but there are some really, really bad songs, including the song with Mos Def called "Drunk and Hot Girls" which is among the worst hip-hop songs I've heard recently.

On a sidenote, I'm completely obsessed with Jamie T right now. Panic Prevention is such a great album. I'm sad that I wasn't in to him a month earlier, I could have seen him here.

Also really enjoying Emerald City by John Vanderslice lately.

Outkast I think is the best rap group ever. They have constantly reinvented and changed their sound on nearly every album and manage to keep relevant through all of it. A lot of artist that do that fall off horribly. Wu-Tang is good at what they do, but they are so big and diverse that in a way the weaker members count against them.

I agree on Graduation, a few really good tracks surrounded by a lot of trash. Pretty much a letdown from his previous efforts.

As much as I love OutKast, I can't agree that they're the best ever. Run DMC beats them. The Beasties were probably more influential, though I'm more of an OutKast fan than a Beasties fan. Boogie Down Productions. Eric B & Rakim, if you count them as a group, and I'm not sure if I do, since it was just one MC and one DJ. I think The Roots are better, while not as popular or commercially successful. And as mentioned before, I'd give the nod to Wu-Tang, personally. Obviously, this is all pretty subjective, and there's clearly no right or wrong answer.

I can see arguments for Run DMC being the pioneers they were, but they never really reinvented their own music the way OuKast does which is why I'd give them the nod over Run-DMC. The Beasties... meh, I just never saw what was so big about them. As much hip-hop as I listened to growing up the Beasties just never really got me into what they were doing and I thought a lot of what they did musically was to make up for lyrical skill. Eric B and Rakim I wouldn't count because they really don't have as much material out as the others and the DJ/Rapper combo like you said seems a little weak for a "group" though everyone over the last 20 years has bitten some part of Rakim's style. The Roots are good, I just don't like them nearly as much as OutKast though I give them credit for being a very creative group. Outkast is one of the very few groups/artist I would by a CD from off name recognition alone having hot heard anything on it.

I never thought about what my top ten hip hop groups would be before now, now I want to go through my cd collection when I move this weekend and figure it out. Who would be on yours?

3. Wu-Tang Clan
4. Black Star
5. The Roots
6. OutKast
7. Boogie Down Productions
8. Dilated Peoples
9. A Tribe Called Quest

I've always loved them, but I liked them waaaaay before I had anything resembling a semi-refined taste in music. I think Outkast is kinda like Tom Petty: Everybody likes them, no matter what. Even cynical bastards like Outkast.

On a separate note, I'm listening to the new Animal Collective for the first time. I hope it's good. The lead track, "Peacebone," is typically strange.

What else have I been listening to?

Still a whole lot of Caribou. Wish I'd discovered him earlier.

I really like the Justice album that came out earlier this year.

I decided I simply don't like M.I.A. all that much.
