so tonight i'm engaged in the unfortunate project of reconstructing mixes i lost when i had to reformat a virus-ridden computer, and it's driving me nuts that i can't quite get them right.

and so i turn to you, music lovers, to help me fix them with whatever new aesthetic twists might be necessary. here's what i have so far:

one:
hustle rose- metric
set yourself on fire- stars
you've gone away enough- mirah
headless horseman- microphones
the city- dismemberment plan
(here's where it gets ****ed, i missed an important transition)
the dress looks nice on you- sufjan stevens
cinder and smoke- iron and wine
song for myla goldberg- the decemberists
transatlanticism- death cab (this might be on another one instead)
things behind the sun- nick drake
this modern love- bloc party
leif erikson- interpol
the 80s- denison witmer

two (long declared the Best Mix Ever by numerous acquaintances):
doll is mine- blonde redhead
the rat- the walkmen
two for joy- electrelane
calm down- psapp
chicago- sufjan stevens
blue bird- the rosebuds
helicopter- m ward
ein elefant fur dich- wir sind helden
that right ain't ****- the books
parallel or together?- ted leo and the pharmacists
white film- tujiko noriko
fumble- architecture in helsinki
passing afternoon- iron and wine

three:
such great heights- the postal service
shave- enon
tourisme- kante
hit the snow- the aislers set
on the table- ac newman
boxcar- the rosebuds
the engine driver- the decemberists
you'll be in the air- microphones
(then there was a transition to some acoustic stuff but i'm blanking)

four:
one step inside doesn't mean you understand- the notwist
of pressure- mirah
norwegian wood- the beatles
let's dance- m ward
(some transitional song to more electronic stuff)
the leaf- the sea and cake
leaf house- animal collective
anthems for a seventeen year-old girl- broken social scene
(then some more crap)
stations- denison witmer

other songs i know i had on mixes but can't place (verified via my last.fm profile, lol):
corporeal- broadcast
the king of carrot flowers- neutral milk hotel
two-headed boy- neutral milk hotel
souvenirs- architecture in helsinki
recovery- new buffalo
une annee sans lumiere- arcade fire
1995- the radio dept.
on the nature of daylight- max richter
the softest voice- animal collective
i see a darkness- bonnie prince billy
stella was a diver and she's always down- interpol
comets- piano magic
saint marie- piano magic
maddening cloud- blonde redhead
the tollbooth martyrs- piano magic
rudy foolish- bonnie prince billy and matt sweeney
one with the freaks- the notwist

there are others, too, i'm sure, but those are the songs that i'm sure i had somewhere that i can't figure out. HELP ME, oh musically inclined!

The Field- From Here We Go Sublime

Just started listening to it, like it so far. Anybody else listening to this, if so, thoughts?

mk, this seems like something you'd enjoy.

Yeah, I like it. Trancey music isn't even my thing, but I listen to "A Paw in My Face" like 20 times a day, and really like the whole disc.

Yea, I'm generally not into that this type of music either, but I don't know I guess it's more mellow than most other music of the same genre.

Yeah, I feel that. It's not, like, in-your-face electronica-trance stuff. It's just really well putogether and sounds good.

Channels 20 and 24 on Sirius radio is what I've been listening to the most.

Channel 20 is the hard rock, heavy metal, while 24 is the 90's rock/alternative/grunge scene.

I'm still stuck in the grunge era and wish that music would come back.

Not a fan of all the whiney sounding, high pitched voices these days in the punk music. Everyone wants to sound like Sum41 or Blink182 it seems.

I've actually spent most of the morning listenening to the first two Strokes albums. I dunno why, but I felt like some more Strokes in my life. I forgot how much I actually enjoyed their second effort.

Yeah, and I don't know what happened. I was in love with the first Strokes album. It's part of what turned me from "classic rock, and little else" guy into "alternative hipster" guy. When I realized there was lots of good music being made out there, and most of it was being played on college radio or not at all, I started digging deeper and finding lots of stuff I enjoyed. I can trace it all back to "Is this it?"

And I was waiting with giddy anticipation for "Room on Fire," and got it immediately when it came on, and listened to it pretty intensely for about two weeks, then... I dunno, got sidetracked or something. Just kinda found something else, or got into something else, or... I dunno. I remember enjoying it and being pretty happy about it not being disappointing or anything, but then... (blank).

I woke up this morning with an odd Strokes craving, so... huh. Go subconscious.

I actually really like this album. I think the opener "What Ever Happened?" is probably their best song. I think this band is highly underrated by super elitist indie/hipster people. Their music is really catchy and good. In some ways, it reminds me of the Ramones with the simplicity, repetition, and the quickness of their songs. I think the problem is that their music isn't meant to be taken too seriously, but it was so hyped up and glorified by the media for a few years that it was rejected in principle by many. I don't know. All I know is I enjoy their music.

Also, their third album really, REALLY sucked hard. So, there's that.

Yeah, I agree completely. I wore the first album out. It was awesome because it was great music, AND everyone in college loved it. Kind of a nice little bridge between alt/hipsters and quasitraditionalists/lame-asses. You can still put like 8-10 Strokes songs on a 50 song party mix, and nobody will be unhappy. Except people who only listen to Regina Spektor and Keith Fullerton Whitman and Peter, Bjorn and John, and look down on anything even mildly popular. And those people are exclusionary lame-asses.

Actually, as a "quasitraditionalist," I didn't like them. I liked them more than most of the " 'The' Bands," but I was pretty lamely anti-anything new. The White Stripes somehow transcended that prejudice, thankfully.

freaking awesome.. I just love RB and Motown covers of beatles songs.

alright here is something that needs to be settled. the Stevie Ray Vaughan version of Little Wing is not even in the same league as the Jimi Hendrix version. Stevie Ray Vaughan is also no where near Jimi Hendrix as a musician in general. This is not even taking into account the fact that Stevie Ray Vaughan is the one covering Jimi Hendrix constantly. I dont see how anyone could think otherwise, oh unless you like cheesy country blues rock versions of perfect songs.

I listen to Regina Spektor, and happen to LOVE Peter, Bjorn and John as well as Keith Fullerton Whitman. But the important word in my original paragraph was ONLY; I happen to really like that Gym Class Heroes song that's on the radio, and thought Future Sex/ Love Sounds was pretty cool.

Regina Spektor is dope, and all the better if you've seen her live. Mix that up with some Fiona Apple and you got it down

My friend turned me on to her, and I'm still kind of getting used to the sound. However, the other artist she turned me on to was Amy Winehouse, and I've been listening to "Back to Black" non stop since. Great album, great voice and style, and extremely hot in a kind of raunchy, British, alcoholic rocker chick way.

i never understood the elitist strokes backlash. i mean, those guys are just way too fuckin cool. i mean, they're cooler than anyone you or i know. by about 8 zillion miles. plus their music is just plain old great. it is absolutely great in the ramones/johnny cash/dylan sense of great, i.e. simplicity, economy. i pretty much love everything about them. sure, the latest was disappointing, but there are some really good songs even still. if anyone thinks they suck, i tell that person to go see 'em live. they are sickkkkk tight, total face-melters.

and btw, i give it about 2 more weeks before the knucklehead non-music music elitists start shunning peter, bjorn and john because too many "lame" people like it.

Army of Me was my favorite, mostly due to her use of giant lasers during the song. Anyway, check her out if you get a chance, since she'll be touring for a long time for her new album.
