I think you're misunderstanding my intention. A band like Meshuggah has each intrumentalist playing a different time signature and then meeting together at a chorus. Tool (while Adam Jones is technically weak) do the same thing, with Danny Carey many times playing multiple time signatures by himself. That's what I was meaning. Most Radiohead songs are in standard timing.
I AM NOT SAYING I DON'T LIKE RADIOHEAD OR THAT THEY "SUCK."
Let me make that clear.
i'm on your side but i think that this is a little bit weak. a lot of people try to defend a bands "musical" prowess by citing their ability to play in multiple time signatures. thats part of it but thats not it. chord progression innovation, the ability to play stuff really fast, syncopation, harmonies that are unconventional, complicated musical breakdowns and the ability to BRING IT ALL BACK are also great marks of musical bands, as well as simply being able to write stuff that doesnt suck.
in these categories that i've named, i'd say radiohead is most advanced in chord progression innovation and rhythmic syncopation, but a band like dream theater, though they might not be that innovative compositionally, can do ridiculous breakdowns, extremely fast shredding, time signatures, rhythmic hits that you wouldn't expect, and more.
don't get me wrong, i vastly prefer radiohead to dream theater. they have better and more human music, simple as that. but in terms of technical prowess, DT just blows everyone out of the water. besides, they were all classically trained and went to Berklee, and you can really hear their classical influences in their music, their chord progressions, the way they structure their albums (overtures, recurring motifs and themes throughout an album, etc).
how about a band like the mars volta? same thing. crazy good musicians. in terms of the categories i listed, they might be the most musical rock band i can think of. they have crazy chord progressions, time sig craziness, weird breakdowns, hits, technically advanced guitarist, bassist, drummer, and SINGER, and they can *sorta* bring it all back. but i think some of their stuff is too convoluted for its own good and is just kinda dumb, and i think some of their stuff is musically pretentious. trying to be really musically crazy and deep, and failing.
also, joball, radiohead does make use of unconventional time signature. here is a list of songs in weird time signatures by them:
15 step (5/4)
morning bell (5/4)
go to sleep (5/4)
idioteque (6/4)
in limbo (6/4)
you (23/8)
everything in its right place (6/4)
okay well you get the idea. i guess i thought they had more, you might be right about the mainly 4/4 stuff.
