Dream Theater is good, scenes from a memory and train of thought especially. but they are overrated and so wanky. basically, since they are really all the most advanced musicians in rock music, they could have done something truly incredible, groundbreaking and innovative. but they made a choice, a choice to jack off their instruments instead.

still, scenes is a masterpiece, and ToT is really fun to listen to. i like when petrucci and rudess shred together. its cute.

Sorry man, but watch this video and try to tell me Phil Selway is better than him.

Mike Portnoy, Drummer of Dream Theater

I think augmented was talking about technically advanced musicians. Which I can think of a lot of other bands that are technically superior to Radiohead. There's not many bands that actually are better than Radiohead though. If that makes sense. I know what I'm trying to say, I just can't think of a way to word it.

exactly. i like radiohead a lot more than i like DT, but i think that the members of DT are much more advanced musically. i havent seen DT in concert and i saw radiohead at the greek just recently...i feel like DT would be sick though. and as for their drummer, i really dont think hes that ridiculous. i think danny carey is definitely better, and gavin harrison from porcupine tree is better too, though that's more arguable. dream theater just kinda pisses me off sometimes. we get it. you are really good at guitar. you do not have to keep playing stuff really fast...it just takes away from the musical integrity of the piece.

I don't get it.

Radiohead is one of the most technically progressive bands ever. They are also very advanced. They may have ripped off Brian Eno (<----- I don't belive they did) for Kid A, but suggesting that Radiohead isn't progressive, or technically advanced is just fucking ignorant.

I think you're misunderstanding my intention. A band like Meshuggah has each intrumentalist playing a different time signature and then meeting together at a chorus. Tool (while Adam Jones is technically weak) do the same thing, with Danny Carey many times playing multiple time signatures by himself. That's what I was meaning. Most Radiohead songs are in standard timing.

I AM NOT SAYING I DON'T LIKE RADIOHEAD OR THAT THEY "SUCK."

Let me make that clear.

i'm on your side but i think that this is a little bit weak. a lot of people try to defend a bands "musical" prowess by citing their ability to play in multiple time signatures. thats part of it but thats not it. chord progression innovation, the ability to play stuff really fast, syncopation, harmonies that are unconventional, complicated musical breakdowns and the ability to BRING IT ALL BACK are also great marks of musical bands, as well as simply being able to write stuff that doesnt suck.

in these categories that i've named, i'd say radiohead is most advanced in chord progression innovation and rhythmic syncopation, but a band like dream theater, though they might not be that innovative compositionally, can do ridiculous breakdowns, extremely fast shredding, time signatures, rhythmic hits that you wouldn't expect, and more.

don't get me wrong, i vastly prefer radiohead to dream theater. they have better and more human music, simple as that. but in terms of technical prowess, DT just blows everyone out of the water. besides, they were all classically trained and went to Berklee, and you can really hear their classical influences in their music, their chord progressions, the way they structure their albums (overtures, recurring motifs and themes throughout an album, etc).

how about a band like the mars volta? same thing. crazy good musicians. in terms of the categories i listed, they might be the most musical rock band i can think of. they have crazy chord progressions, time sig craziness, weird breakdowns, hits, technically advanced guitarist, bassist, drummer, and SINGER, and they can *sorta* bring it all back. but i think some of their stuff is too convoluted for its own good and is just kinda dumb, and i think some of their stuff is musically pretentious. trying to be really musically crazy and deep, and failing.

also, joball, radiohead does make use of unconventional time signature. here is a list of songs in weird time signatures by them:
15 step (5/4)
morning bell (5/4)
go to sleep (5/4)
idioteque (6/4)
in limbo (6/4)
you (23/8)
everything in its right place (6/4)

okay well you get the idea. i guess i thought they had more, you might be right about the mainly 4/4 stuff.
Don Giovanni
well radiohead also does things like pyramid song, which is 4/4 but doesnt really sound like it unless you really listen. besides, i think all those bands that do those crazy signatures are sacraficing the overall musical picture just for the sake of being technically impressive.

yes i kiiiiiiiinda agree with you, in that a song thats in 4/4 that sounds like something else (like pyramid song, or the verse to cassandra gemini) is to me just as technically impressive as a song in 11/4 or a song like lateralus which is in 9/8-8/8-7/8. BUT, i dont think the overall musical picture is usually sacrificed when a band decides to go way out there. dream theater definitely uses it gratuitously, and the mars volta does sometimes too, but other than that i always feel refreshed when i hear something that isn't in your standard 4/4, as long as it has some sort of catchy hook. at some point you have to give it up for bands that are willing to try something new and innovative and applaud their musicianship when they execute it in a musical manner.

Loveless by My Bloody Valentine has become my favorite album ever. this is important because if it wasnt for this thread i wouldnt know it existed.

i remember when i was first talking about it with the usual characters of this thread, and when i first listened to it i thought it was a decent album with a few good songs. i listened to it for a while and then moved on. then i came back to it and really started to like it a lot. then i started to feel like it was the only thing i could listen to and i went out and got 2 MBV EPs that came out right before Loveless. now ive been listening to it everyday for quite some time.

i feel like im swimming in guitar distortion when im listening to this album. and some of the vocal lines and melodies are just amazing. the chord progressions are amazing too. and all the awesome ambient transitions betweens the songs just make the album come together. and finally, Soon is such a sweet song to end the album with, its just perfect. wow that was a lot.

Alright gang, I am down and out for the count for the next month as I heal from back surgery, so I need something good to listen to. After learning of Syd Barrett's death (Syd was the founder of my personal favorite band of all-time, Pink Floyd), I have listened to a lot of Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Syd's solo stuff as a tribute. But I am done with that for now....I have no access to my music collection, so I desperately need to find something good to listen to. Help me out!

"His name is Takeo/ he's got a blackbelt in Karate." I paused for a moment, and immediately started laughing. I must have heard one of my friends make that joke or something, because there's no way I'm that creative. My friends used to make Takeo Spikes references all the time.

Nobody in Kalamazoo right now listens to the Lips, so I had to share with you all.
