QUOTE (clingfree)
I usually don't get involved in this type of stuff on here, but I have to say, your ignorance is amazing.
There is racial prejudice everywhere, it is not limited to the southern United States. Having been born and raised in NC, I was shocked at the level of overt racism I found when I moved to MI 8 years ago. We have neighborhood schools here, which is a not so subtle way of keeping certain groups of people separated. We did away with that kind of thing years ago in NC.
For those of you who have no understanding of the Confederacy of Southern States and the reasons behind the Civil War, please do a little research instead of regurgitating what you were taught in school. For instance, anyone care to take a guess as to who was the first country in this hemisphere to ban the importation of slaves?
The Civil War was about so much more than slavery, yet very few people understand this.
Anyway, there are censored rednecks everywhere. I've even run into a few in Canadia, tho I can't say there were many.
Have a good day, resume regular programming now.
I'll be the first to admit there might be more hicks in this my home state of MI than anywhere(If you're a member of the Michigan Militia, please stand up).
I also know pretty much everything about the Civil War. I went to college (for a while at least). I'm not a middle-school moron. I don't even think I mentioned the Civil War once in my post (though I did allude to it, I suppose, by mentioning the Confederate Flag).
I also allowed that there is racism, bigotry, and prejudice EVERYWHERE.
Those things aside, I still think Southerners are more defensive of their oft-bigoted brethren than other regional persons. For example, I absolutely HATE the Michigan militia. I'm embarrassed by them. You also wouldn't see T-shirts in northern Michigan with Oklahoma City jokes on them, whereas much of the tourist South is rife with jokes at the expense of former slaves and African-Americans.
Look, I don't hate all Southerners. I just think you're too easy on each other. I mean,
I was on a random Southern Road Trip and stopped at at rest-stop. Guess who was memoralized as a hero in bronze on the inside of pavillion: George Wallace. It's stuff like that; those little digs go a long way towards my discomfort when I'm in the South
Cheers,
Wang
