Full Version: isolating in a loose game?

I've really been thinking about 3-betting to isolate since there was a hand posted on here last night which ended up being deleted. Anyway the hand had Hero at UTG+3 with pocket 8s and UTG raised. The hero 3 bet, in an attempt to isolate. Now my main question is, since in a .50-1.0 game on party, 3 betting to isolate is simply not usually going to work, so does it still have any value. It does not have an obvious +EV like making the field face two cold post-flop to make sure they are not getting the odds to go for their inside straight draws, so I don't really like re-raising with a middle pair in EP. I may be screwing up many hands by simply calling in situations like this, but I really wanted an answer to this, but the post got erased somehow. Any thoughts?

If many others call...
You have tremendous implied odds to hit your set.
And could even have odds to see the turn.

If only the blinds call, you have bought the button.

Fold equity can be nice.

I'm not real comfortable with this 3-bet yet; but getting there in 6 Max, where you are fairly likley to get it HU and have fold equity.

I've been learnig 6-max and noticed this too. It seems that sets are even more profitable there because people become obsessed with raising TP with any kicker. I mean the swings have been crazy, but I've only logged maybe 3000 hands so it don't mean much yet. Hopefully I'm going to be posting a lot more 6-max hands over the next few weeks so I can get help because I'm just breaking even right now.
