they have tourneys and one table SNG...62 buy in and 3 dollars more for 50 more chips...they take 15$ from the pot from each player...thats more then 20% of the pot they are raking.....300 in chips and starting blinds are 10-15...if you dont buy the extra 50..thats 10% of your chips from one round of blinds....what a joke...
i think all Mandalay resort casinos(luxor, circus, excaliber, monte carlo) have this structure....

anyone know any tourneys that have decent starting chips and a good structure?

When I was in vegas over the summer I played in this luxor tournament. I made up for the weak structure by drinking a lot. I drank 14 double crown and sevens during the tournament and still made the final table. Even with the bad structure I think it could still be easy money consistantly.

MGM had a pretty good tournament... 1500 start, 25/50 blinds but no rebuy... Well run and enjoyable.

I had my first trip to Vegas back in October and prior to going I put together a list of tourneys that I wanted to play in that I found online. One of the tourneys on my list was the Friday Night Luxor one. The website said the tourney was a $125 buy-in. Well, I got there and the buy-in was actually only $65. I decided to try it anyways. The starting chips were absolutely horrid and i think the limits went up every 15 minutes. You can tell the tourney is designed simply to get players in the room for the live games rather than to provide a good tourney. I don't remember how much the house took out of the buy-ins, but there were approximately 45 people in the tournament, and it paid 7! In my opinion that is way too many places to pay. That really dilutes the payout to the winners. Needless to say, I played for 2.5 hours and won the tourney for a payout of apprx. $680. I really felt that it was a bad deal considering the buy-in vs the payouts. Oh well, I don't think I will be going back for that tourney.

On a side note, I also tried the Thursday night tourney at the Mirage. My info on this tourney was also incorrect. The buy-in was listed at $240 with no re-buys. I sit down at my table and a guy busts out on the first hand and requests a re-buy! His re-buy for $200 got him more than the starting chips which I thought was extremely odd. That sounded more like an add-on. Anyways, I had tripled my stack by the end of the fourth round when everyone was allowed one last chance for a re-buy. Everyone still alive got a re-buy. Me and my stubborn attitude about how this didn't seem right refused to get a re-buy. So in turn, everyone that I was pushing around now BOUGHT an equal amount of chips as me. In the end i wound up closing out at 15th place. Looking back on it, I think I would have done much better had I gotten my re-buy and increased my stack along with everyone else. Oh well, live and learn.

I agree completely.
I played in this one night in Vegas. 1/3 of the players were out
by the time the second BB came to me. It was donkalicious.
I came 3rd, just by playing way tight.
If you find ANY kind of hand, go all in. You'll get called.
My table had 2 guys out on the first hand!

Wynn has a great structure for tournaments. On Tuesday and Thursday starting at noon there is a $300 buy in tournament. You start with 3000 in chips and 45 minute rounds. You actually have time to play poker. On Friday the tournament starts at 3pm, and it is a $500 buy in. On those mornings they do have satellites, Tuesday and Thursday, $80 for two seats, and on Friday is $125 for two seats.

How do the Tues / Thurs tournaments usually run ?! How many players / apprx. payout?! How long do you think the tourney runs with 45 minute rounds ?!

Thanks

Tues/Thurs tournaments usually have 70 - 115 players, usually runs anywhere from 6 - 9 hours, and first place usually is about $10k.

even the first place money is not enough for the casino to report so once you are in the torney they dont check for ID when you cash...they just ask for your name and the dealer gives you the cash

I heartily recommend the Sahara ones, 11am, 7pm and 11pm. The 7 pm's get >100 players. $42. buyin for 2000 chips, $20. for and addon/rebuy of 1500 that you can get from your dealer any time in the 1st hour. 20 min blinds all details displayed on monitors.
The evening one I played in had 130 players and payed $2300. for 1st.
