I have heard numerous tournament players refer to managing the size of the pot. Can anybody elaborate on this or is there an article written somewhere that has this strategy discussed?

I dont know of any articles, though I think Sklansky might give it brief mention in THAP.
Ive mostly heard it discussed in HU play, where, when you have a big chip lead and the blinds are small, you dont want to force the pot to be too big because despite not having calling odds, the very size of the pot could make it worthwhile for the short stack to call and get back in the game. Ie prize equity is more likely to overcome hand equity the larger the pot gets.
