So i'm leaving work today at 3:45 to catch my first ever flight to vegas.

Needless to say i'm freaking out.

I'll be there until sunday. I've got a 1000$ bankroll and plan on playing limit hold em with 1 no limit session and 1-2 tourneys.

Any advice aside from the obvious always raise with the hammer?

P.S

Daniel,

I challenge you to a 100,000 penny challenge match.

I'll meet you at the bellagio. Bring a suitcase filled with unmarked pennies.

Bring him some poutine and he might go for it.

i have some advice. dont go on crazy tilt like i did in vegas my first time. sh*t is different in person than online. cant explain why.

also, dont get the free drinks while you play poker. you probably know this already though; fairly common sense. good luck to you, can't wait to hear how you do. out of curiousity where are you staying? im planning on going back out for my third trip this winter sometime.

$1000 is slim for las vegas but you got what you got. obviously id recommend taking about $2000 maybe more but it's meaningless advice at this point.

the plaza runs a great little tourny. 60 buy in one addon. max is 100.00 i think. they start 12 PM and run every 4 hours with the last one at midnight. they get about 35 to 50 poeple in it. i think it is the best low $ event in vegas...fits your bankroll really.
kers2
Softest NL cash games (IMO): Mandalay Bay 2-5 NL and Excalibur 1-2 NL

Best Tourny Structure (from the ones we actually played): The Plaza, from what I remember it was a $50 buy in with 1- $50 add/on. You started with 3500 in chips, blinds started at 25-50 and went up every 20-30 mins, so it wasnt bad at all.

i have played the hell out of excalibur's nl game. i agree with you.

mandalay bay.. i will have to check that out next time.

the mgm 1/2 seemed kind of hit and miss, beautiful poker room though. i dig it.

i thought the palms seemed relatively soft also. 2/5 blinds $500 buy in.

i barely cashed in one of those midnight madness tourneys in april. holy shit, half the field was drunk. a real riot. small fields tho. upper 40s that night i think. was a weekday tho i think...

the MGM room is awesome as well as the bellagio's...

what kind of limits are you looking for??2/4 3/6 10/20???

Highest NL spread I saw at MGM was 2/5NL

I literally just got back from my first trip this week.

I stayed at the MGM Grand which has a class poker room as you know. The spread of games is perhaps a little limited but is still more than enough for your roll.

I truly loved every minute of playing live , there were plenty of cool characters, friendly dealers and fishy tourists. The biggest surprise for me was how passive the games were, very little true aggression and I was able to 'run' my tables without any real problems. The other thing I found very refreshing was it was very difficult to tilt as, I am not used to playing Live and was reluctant to make an ass of myself.

I finished up in three out of four live sessions and came about 15th in the 125 dollar tourney after my KK was busted by 22.

Overall it was an excellent few days and I think the only mistake I made was bringing my woman with me to Vegas. The tiddie bars looked off the hook.

Well i'm BRINGING 1000$ but of course have access to an extra 1000$.

I just hope I don't need it. And frankly, if I stay smart, I don't expect to.

i've played a few tournaments in montreal and have been playing a weekly game for about a year. Won't be raking in the dough, but shouldn't be losing much either.

I'll be looking for 2/4 or 3/6 limits, with maybe 1 200$ buy-in attempt at no-limit and about 100-200$ worth of tourneys.

Don't forget to have fun. See more than the card rooms. Make a trip to Binions.

the breakfast bufett at Paris is +EV

I'm actually staying at binions the first night and then caesars palace. I'm gonna catch a show, go out, etc. . . when not playing cards.
matthew r
how much are you paying at caesars?

ive always stayed downtown in vegas this time i want to be on the strip. excalibur is pretty cheap for the days im looking at i'll probably end up there.
shinychicken
Eat at Fat Burger. You won't regret it.

the flamingo buffet id -EV
awful, awful, awful

if you do want to have drinks, whether table games or the slots, tip the chick $1 and she will be on you like flies on censored.

the imperial palace has an excellent buffet, cheap and goo stuff. if you go around 1030-1130 am, you get the breakfast price for brunch. delicious.

i also liked the mgm grand poker room, my husband liked aladdin (i didnt play there, but very spacious)

the only place we won on slots was fremont street, and a little at barbary coast.

Okay, i'm back. Here's how things went:

I played at the horseshoe the first night and Bally's/Paris the rest of the trip, as far as poker is concerned. I finished up about 300$, including 2 tournaments in which I didn't cash.

I did alot better at the 1-2 NL game than any other limit game (1-2, 2-4, 3-6)

I DID eat at fatburger, and it was indeed a tasty burger.

Caesar's was okay, and Cleopatra looked hot enough, but I didn't play much there.

I wanted to go to Bellagio/Wynn, etc. . . but just couldn't be bothered to walk anywhere. Being my first trip, I just wanted to play as much as possible and I found the Bally's room to be well run, nice dealers, good service, etc. . .

My favourite hand was getting the nut flush and doing a little hollywood on my opponent, asking him if he got the flush, etc. . . and getting him to call my bet on the river after I said 'I think you've got the flush but i'm gonna try this anyway'

Not a big deal for all you pros out there, but it was kinda fun for me.

Wow - so you go to Veags and one of the first things you do is angle shoot. You sir, are great for the game of poker. (sw)

I wasn't going to flame you until I saw that.

Yeah, I guess you're right...I only hope the game can survive after what i've done...

I'm pretty sure that's completely allowed. Just like acting weak vs acting strong and all that other lovely stuff. He just acted weak with his words.

That was not angle shooting at all. I see nothing wrong with it.

He didn't say what he had...or lie about anything...he just said he thought his opponent had the flush.

Annoying? Yes. Illegal/Immoral/Angling? No.

I just got back from my first trip to Vegas and it was also my first live poker experience besides home games. I played the 1-3 nl game at the wynn and sat with $200. My strategy was to play tight for the first hour or so and feel out the players and study everyone at the table to pick up some tells. I left the table the first night after playing for 5 hours with $1200. That was my biggest night as far as net profit but I played the same way for 3 other nights and left the table every night in the black. Total profit for 4 nights playing was $2300. Make sure you stay out of big pots with the good players unless you have a very good read on them or you have the nuts. I saw many people go broke chasing draws. Good luck.

No.

What about slowplaying, is that wrong too? I mean, it's misleading!

Would you prefer if everyone just flipped their cards face up and got eveything in the open?

Come on...

Is that $1/$3 NL a cooky game or what ? Some players have $100 in front of them and some have $5,000. You gotta love the dealers face when they have to mess around with those wacky $3 chips and when they try to add up bets and all.
matthew r
the wynn has no cap on the buyin for that 1/3 nl game? dammit, i was plannin on checkin that game out (in 2 weeks) til i read that. i hate those nl games.
Habs Fan
No, there's a cap. There is just no cap on how much you're allowed to win.

The guys with fat stacks won those chips. They didn't buy 'em.
FriscoKid
Actually there is no max buy-in at any of the games at Wynn.

I just got back from 3 days of playing there. I played both the 1/2 and 2/5 NL games for a profit..... but holy crap some of these guys do take advantage of the no max. Have you ever seen someone buy into a 1/2 game with 12K?

Check out allvegaspoker for a list of all the tourneys and games at each poker room. It also has user reviews and trip reports. Nice resource.. and no I am not affiliated with it.
