No reads unfortunately Villain just sat down

Hollywood Poker No-Limit Hold'em $1.00 BB (6 handed)

Relevant Stack Sizes
Hero (BB); $189
Villain (SB); $68

Preflop: Hero is dealt 4 icon_suit_club.gif 5 icon_suit_diamond.gif
3 folds, Button calls $1, SB calls $1, BB checks

Flop: ($3) 6 icon_suit_spade.gif 7 icon_suit_spade.gif 8 icon_suit_spade.gif
SB bets $1, Hero bets $4, Button folds, SB calls $3

SB in an unraised pot, he could have virtually anything. I am scared of the slow played made flush but would put him on a high icon_suit_spade.gif if I had to make a guess at this point

Turn: ($11) 10 icon_suit_club.gif
SB checks, Hero....??

Better than a icon_suit_spade.gif but not much better, Villain could have a higher straight with a lone 9 now. I think SB would have bet with the made straight however because he would also be scared of a icon_suit_spade.gif falling on the river.

Once I get some feedback on play up until the turn will post my turn play and river card for further discussion

You said it yourself - the 10 icon_suit_club.gif isn't much different than a icon_suit_spade.gif. At this point you've got the idiot end of a straight w/ a possible flush on board and a 4-card straight that beats yours. I don't think you can put another penny in this pot. Wait for a better spot.

checks,

check folds

it may be weak with reads.. but without you are screwed.

I decided to go with my original read that Villain was holding a high icon_suit_spade.gif (thinking he would have bet out with his made straight being afraid of another icon_suit_spade.gif on the river)

Turn: ($11) 10 icon_suit_club.gif

SB checks, Hero bets $7, SB calls $7

Definately in check, fold mode now

River: ($25) J icon_suit_spade.gif

SB checks, Hero checks

Interetsing results, what does everyone put Villain on now given Turn and River action/cards??

Some kind of 2 pair I guess.

I'm probly throwing out a feeler bet of around 7 on the turn and checking behind on the river.

The short answer is you're better off check/folding the flop.

We have the dumb end of a straight on a highly coordinated board, we need brick-brick to *maybe* be good on the river, we won't get paid off by worse hands (because worse hands are more scared than we are), and if any one spade, 9 or 5 comes off OR the board pairs, we can't call a big bet.

Yes we flopped a straight, but the biggest difference between this straight and other flopped straights is we have an almost 0% chance of winning a big pot (and by big pot I mean an all-in/call where we end up winning).

The long answer involves highly specific reads we probably can't have, and the slightly more complex concept of "waiting for the turn to raise."

"Waiting for the turn to raise" is not to be confused with slowplaying.
