ok, so here's the article:

http://www.thepokerforum.com/omahahilosystem.htm

I'm sure a lot of people are familiar with. Obviously this is very simplified, but I thought I'd ask some questions about it, and perhaps some good players can clarify either why things are true, or how they could be more accurately modified.

1. any A2 is playable. I guess this is true at my limits, but at about what limits does A2xx become unplayable?

2. are hands with four cards 10+ with a suited ace or king not playable? What about a hand like 9-10-K-A(ds). I see how 9s are significantly less valuable than 10s, but in a connected hand, they don't seem like they should take a lot away from playability.

3. Is there really much value to a hand with low cards 34 and 45? It seems that 34 or 45 won't win the low often enough to be worth many points.

4. it does not take into account your 4th low card, i.e. the hand 2359 is equally playable to 2356. also, 2357 is supposedly unplayable?

5. are pairs of kings not about as valuable as a pair of aces (suitedness notwithstanding?) since an ace puts a piece of a low on board.

6. he does not mention position. Clearly, this is important. My question is what type of marginal hands play better/worse from early/latel position? i.e. should i be more careful about avoiding marginal high hands from early position or marginal low hands?

Lastly - what else? I know this is an oversimplified and at least partially flawed system, so if there are any other mistakes/omissions please let me know.

Cheers,
Daniel

well, I'm sure I have a lot to learn still, I have played maybe about 30K hands. but I can offer my opinion.

1. I think that an unsuited raggedy A2 is unplayable in any PL game and in the tighter limit games maybe 2/4 and above you might think about folding it.

2. 4 cards 10 and above are playable especially if you have a pair or suit to go with it. 9's stink as connectors in that if you make the NUT straight with them you are likely playing for half the pot.

3. 34 and 45 stink without a lot more to go with them like and A or some other wheel cards. It's true you will rarely make money with them alone.

4. agree that it looks like a folly to the point system, I don't like using a point system myself, you should be able to recognize a good hand when you see it. I have personally found having a 6 or 7 in my hand with my wheel cards can go a long way to quartering someone.

5. kings are great in a PL game since the implieid odds are great but less valuable in a FL game I think, to play KK in a FL game you need a lot more to go with it than you need to play AA. AA will always make a better hand in the long run espcially suited and with wheel cards.

6. I'm sure I have a lot to learn still but I haven't found position to matter too much in low limit fixed limit games. Your hand selection matters a ton more. PL games are a different matter though and position becomes very valuable there, you can definetly play weaker hands in later position than you normally might play.

Well, there be some of my thoughts, forgive me if this advice sucks, I haven't actually read the point system for some time, I never liked the system, I hope you don't actually add up your points before deciding to play a hand smile.gif btw, check out www.o8poker.com for great O8 info.

Also, btw, I am much more loose in my preflop selection in Pot-Limit than Fixed limit. I can have a $VPIP of 30-40% in PL and still make money but have a hard time in fixed limit if I am even over 25%. I'm sure it is due to implied odds and the ability to actually take a pot down on the flop with a pot bet.
