Just to let you know Daniel since you seem not to in your blog:

The Apple iPod uses lithium-ion batteries which are great when it comes to battery life, battery design and recharge memory. The problem with them is that over time, as you recharge them, they loose some of their ability to store energy. After some time they will just not be able to be recharged anymore.

Apple replaces these batteries for IIRC $99. But then you will have to send your ipod to them. In your case you might as well just buy a new one.

Iriver's kick Ipods asses.

I got mine for the same price as an Ipod, the difference.

I havn't had a problem with my IRiver while Best buy is continually exchanging Ipods.

Mine has a color screen

Mine can hold an extra gig of songs

It has an FM Tuner that you can listen music too, and you can also take the music from the tuner and put it on your Iriver

It has a function that allows you to transfer pictures and text files through your Iriver. So let's say you don't have a printer at home for your paper, you can put it on your Iriver, take it to the library and print it off.

It has a removeable battery so you DON'T have to send it to Mars if you do have problems(which again, I havn't).

Final analysis Iriver > Ipod.

Zeatrix is right, however, if I remember correctly if you do send your iPOD to Apple they may not return yours back (source: http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com/). Therefore backup your songs before sending it to Apple to get the battery replaced.

If your iPOD is fairly new then the quick drainage of your battery is most likely due to the following two reasons: 1 - you pause, fast foward, and next track a lot. 2- you're encoding your songs at a high bit rate and/or large file size (not really applicable if you buy all your songs from iTunes). <source: http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html>

If you need more juice than what an iPOD is designed for then you can always pick up an external batter like this one: http://tinyurl.com/95xvk

Hope that helps.

Daniel,

The battery in your iPod is supposed to last 8-12 hours depending on your model. If it's only lasting 4 hours, there is something wrong with it.

It cost $65.95 to have it replaced... http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery/

Also, the previously mentioned external battery is an excellent idea. You can buy an external Belkin battery for $49.95 that provides an extra 12-15 hours of play time on top of whatever the internal battery is doing... http://tinyurl.com/cb97q

That's a lot less expensive than I remembered =)

That's not really possible since you can't transfer songs from the iPod to your computer, only from your computer to the iPod. It's an anti-piracy feature.

The different iPods can also do this: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial...tarted_t12.html

iTunes may not allow you to do so, but that shouldn't prevent you from making a backup of your own songs. Here is a nice solution: http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ $30 for the universal edition is right in Daniel's price range. wink.gif Of course if he's a uber cheapskate he can just use the trail version, which is free. smile.gif

A friend gave me some insider information on iPods.

He said certain technicians engineered iPod batteries to become weak and die after about 2 years (tops). I had wondered why I've been through 4 iPods in 2 years while treating them unabusively-- so I asked.

He said there are a lot of employees who wear the iPod on their belts at work, but really don't like them. They simply get them at a pretty good price (or so he says).

Cowon makes a product called the iAudio X5. This is what my friend and a few of his fellow employees have.

A few details:

$300 (same as 20 gig iPod)
20 gig memory
Color screen
- Plays movies/videos at GREAT quality
- Displays pictures
FM Tuner
Voice/Sound recorder (very handy, you'd be surprised)
USB connect slot (to transfer files/pictures/etc)
SAME size as 20 gig iPod
It's scratch resistant and is a really nice black matte color.

I've owned 6 (yes, 6) iPods and have had nothing but headaches.

My 3rd gen had a problem WHILE it was still covered under warranty. They still charged me $60 to replace it. I still don't know why. Within 2 months the new iPod had the infamous folder/exclamation point problem. The warranty on my first iPod was up, and Apple said if they replace an iPod then the FIRST warranty transfers to the next one. I thought it was quite ridiculous how I got 0 extra warranty on my new iPod.

Then with my 4th gen the same thing happened. It worked for 4 months. Then they replaced it. The new one worked for 6 months, then they replaced that for $60.

I bought a mini (to work out, I guess) and I'm having some major battery problems with that now.

iAudio X5... the win.

That's not accurate, as I wrote in my first post, lithium-ion batteries get depleted over time if you use and recharge them, nothing conspiratory at all.

*Edit*

Don't know if conspiratory is an actual word, but it sounds cool =)
