Hey folks. Haven't posted for a long time and just read about DN's Wynn N. L. game and it reminded me of last month.
The fabulous Wynn hotel comped my wife and I from Sept. 25th thru the 27th. What an amazing hotel, especially when it's free! (pardon the gloating). My wife usually conks out by 11 so I checked the t.v. in our room to see what was going on in the poker room (what an awesome feature for guests by the way). I noticed there was a long wait for the $1-$2 NL game and instead decided to play the $5-$10 NL figuring that it couldn't be much different than $1-$2. Ooops.
Oh-my-gawd, what a dork. I only took $800 with me downstairs! You should have seen the looks on everyones face at that table. Here I am with my puny Vienna sausage stack up against, like...$10's of thousands. It was downright laughable. I had no idea it would look so stupid. I almost left but figured that would be even worse, so I sat there and promised my self to only play the best hands possible.
I was watching guys throw entire racks into the pots, one old guy was tossing off hundo's like he was peeling a damn potato! I was incredible to watch. But I gotta tell ya, it was a great game. This was a whole other level and it was very cool to be a part of it...as an observer. And then it hit me. These guys really weren't that much better than I was!
I'm serious. I know that sounds arrogant, and my game is far to tight to be pro caliber, but these guys were playing some real crap hands. The difference was they could afford to! But that's it. I knew then that If I got a monster I was gonna push it hard.
I sat there like a rock for 45 minutes and finally got KK. Most hands got re-raised several hundred preflop and this was no exception. I decided not to re-raise since I was going all-in anyway. THe flop was oatmeal and I pushed it all in. Guess what? They all FOLDED! Respect baby! I sat there for 3 hours and won over $1600, and only played my best 6 hands. SIX HANDS! Incredible.
What a ride, and what great game.
I highly suggest anyone to give it a go. It may scare the poo-poo outta ya at first but it will be well worth the experience!

nice. sounds like variance was on your side. if anyone had AA when you had KK, it would've been a totally different story

True enough about those Aces. I did think about that but felt after the low rainbow flop I was good. Plus, I had been watching these guys for almost an hour and could tell from the way they had played previous hands that I was probably the best.
They always seemed to over-bet with Ace-King (or Ace anything for that matter). But there was only a small raise pre flop this time, which was met by 3 calls. I was on the button too which was key. The BB had bet out a token amount post flop (something like $60, can't remember exactly) and it just stunk to me like a feel/steal.
I hesitated for a minute considering the Aces and just said screw it. I mean if I'm beat by Aces then so be it. I just slowly slide my stack to the middle. The BB (a very good/aggressive player) gave me a big grin and a "nice job". Pumped me up a little, I must say.
I did have the cards go my way in the hands I played, and they all knew I was a rock. Maybe that made it easier for them to give up the smaller pots to me if they missed the flop. I dunno. I only played real good hands and bet out hard the few times I had them. Seemed to work that night, thank God.
Hey, I'll be the first to admit I was probably in the wrong game, but it was a great learning experience. Facing your fears makes you stronger, right?, or so they say.
I can only hope I have the same luck next time I play there.

I just finished reading so many people telling DN that he was out of line for buying in for $125K at that game.
But I think you were way out of line for buying in for so little. Didn't you know that the big stacks were going to unfairly take all your money? You were totally at their mercy because they had you completely covered and they raised alot!
You sir are lucky to have left with any clothes, let alone a profit, which as some pros know isn't possible, or at least likely.
I hope you have learned your lesson and will take your winnings to make a sign that you can hang from your cap that says; "Do not play with big stacks...you can only come to ruin!"

P.S. Nice job controlling yourself and playing well.

Good job on the poker table.
So how much did the 2 day hotel "comp" really cost you? Just curious. Were you playing table games or high stakes slots?

Lesson learned for sure, but I'm a bit of a risk taker anyway, and to be honest I didn't care if I had lost the $800. I mean I was willing to risk it that night anyway. And once in that game I just figured if I waited long enough and could double up, then that $800 would be enough.
I mean, I had plenty of cash in the room, I just didn't think to bring it! It was just embarrassing. But the folks at the table were very nice...great people. It was a real talkative, fun game actually ('cept for that old guy with the cash. He looked like the living dead). Apparently he is a late night regular and loose as a goose. He was that for sure.
As far as the comp went, we figured the room was $290 a night and they gave us $100 slot credit, so all told it was almost a $700 comp. Not bad. Big props to the Wynn and their excellent facility.
We spent all of our time there (especially the pool) so we coughed out at least $500 of our own cash while there. (Did I mention we love the Wynn?) :-) .
