Pokerblue 1/2, no converter, full table. SB has been passive

I'm on the button with :spadesa: :diamondsq:

MP limps, I raise, SB calls, BB calls, MP calls

Pot $8, Flop is :diamondsa: :heartsq: :hearts9:

3 Checks, I bet, SB calls, BB calls, MP folds

Pot $11, Turn is :hearts10:

2 Checks, I bet, SB calls, BB calls

Pot $17, River is :spades7:

2 Checks, I bet, SB raises, BB folds, I call

I bet the turn and river for value despite the scary turn card. Should I have just taken the free showdown on the river?

When SB raises me on the river, I figured that I was probably beat but called it for one more bet.

I think you have to bet that river and pay off the raise, checking gives up too much value.

The turn card is scary, but you have to pay the river raise off. The guy could have just made two pair.
Actuary
well played.
Actuary
he may also be bluffing a missed str8 draw...
or ..

but you are probably beaten.

The point is, you are not beaten enough to not call with the pot size.

So why bet?

Well, because weak Aces call, A7 raises, QJ may call for one more bet...

Another advantage to betting, imo,...is to give folks the impression that there will be no Free Showdowns. We don't discuss this much; but I think it has merit. { although, I give plenty of free showdowns } Of course you don't want to be easilty trapped either..but I know when I'm at the table with someone who is ultra passive in pos on the river, I may call the turn more with weaker made hands+a draw since the ShowDown will likely be free.
