I've smoke almost continuous, for the last 13 years, a pack of day, I lost half of one of my lungs a couple of years ago because of it, and I'm still smoking. I just came to a realization, that if I don't stop it's going to kill me, and it's expensive, so today when I wake up (I work third shift) I stop. If anyone has any ideas on how to ease the nicotine pains it would be appreciated. thanks and wish me luck.

No idea about how to ease the pain but wishing you the best of luck

Start chewing. But no really. My mom just quit and she got this fake cig. thing that gives out like 85% less nicotine than cigs. and she said it helped alot with the cravings.

I just quit smoking a little over a month ago. It wasn't easy but I am so glad I did it.

Good luck to you.

I've been a smoker for 7 years, and I'm in the process of trying to quit myself. First of all, moral support from people you know can be more useful than anything else. Second of all, hospitals or health care places around your community should have free smoking cessation classes, and I highly recommend joining one. It's nice to meet people who share a common goal with you. Pick a realistic quit date and stick to it. Don't just say "I'm going to wake up tomorrow and quit", pick a date 2, 3 weeks out and say that's the day. Buy some gum (not Nicotine gum, regular gum). Buy some Nicoderm CQ (the patches). They will really help with the cravings at work or if you are out somewhere with a lot of smoke. Good luck.

Both of my parents quit in the early 80's, right before I was born. They said they went cold turkey. I've never tried it though so I can't give any personal help.

All I can say is don't bother trying the patch...it reduces cravings a little bit...but I ended up smoking cigarettes while wearing the damn thing and it is NOT good for your body at all...

I wan't to quit too, I did the math before and if you smoke a pack a day for a year you end up paying $1,460.00 ($4 * 365) to slowly kill yourself...

Some advice I've been given:
1) Start Exercising a lot...cardio-type workouts
2) Sip on a glass of water to slow down cravings
3) Smoke weed instead
4) Chew gum (not nicotine gum)
5) Snack on cashews (or something similar) when you crave

I've used these the 4 or 5 times I've tried to quit, but I always had that day where I just "had to have" a cigarette...It takes a lot of discipline, but from everyone I know that has successfully quit, the best route to go is cold turkey

Good Luck man...you've inspired me to try to quit again to at least seriously consider it again...hopefully we can both quit and be done w/ this bullshit

I used to work with a person that told me of an interesting method. My husband and I tried it, and it seemed to work, although we ended up starting again. HARD to not smoke at the bars... Anyway, instead of patches, nic-substitutes, or cold turkey, pick a target week, which is Week 1. Allow yourself 10 cigs/day for the first week. Week 2, 9 cigarettes a day, Week 3, 8 cigs, and so on, till you reach 0. We made it to 4 or 5, and it wasnt too bad, but like i said, the bars killed us. also, we were only going out for so long at this time, and bars were teh way to go in rural WI. Good luck, keep me posted if you try this method!

Then avoid bars. :?

I found drinking insane amounts of water can really reduce the cravings, like constantly sipping from a bottle. The main problem is that you accociate certain situations with smoking so its not just giving up smokes but changing your lifestyle patterns which is the hard thing.
FOOSE1
Never smoked so I have no advice . . . just support.

Good Luck MB!

Me, too. Everytime I cough up a lung I say I'm going to quit.

I really am. Someday. I swear.

Good for you, I can't stand smokers. Not only do theynot care about their own health but they fuck up other people with second hand smoke. It's gonna be hard but I bet you'll do it. My Grandma quit smoking cold turkey after seriously like 50-70 years of smoking every day.

Good luck. I've been spared the temptation to smoke since I have bad lungs. Smoking just one ciggarette ends with a trip to the emergency room for me. I've never understood why people with perfectly healthy lungs would would want to damage them. I'd give anything to have healthy lungs. I wish you the best. It won't be easy, but your life is worth it.

I feel bad for smokers, I want to help them quit. I see all these really hot chicks and then they pull out a cigarette and I wanna go up and say "you're so hot, why do you smoke?" but it's really none of my business to interfere.

On the smoking is hot/not hot thing...

I know there are a lot of guys who think a chick who smokes is hot. There are way more who think a chick who smokes is not hot.

The 1st group will think a chick who doesn't smoke is also hot. The 2nd group never think a chick who does is.

Does that make sense?

I really don't have a point. It's just an observation I've made.

I think there are chicks that are hot who smoke, but i don't think that they are hot or are hotter because they smoke.

I tried smoking once. I just took one from my parents and tried it but when I did it tasted like shit and I caughed the rest of the day. So what I don't understand is how people who smoke try it a 2nd time. Did you honestly like it the 1st time? Peer pressure? Wanting to look cool?
renaedawn
When I started smoking at 16 it probably was because of peer pressure and wanting to look cool.

I quit at 24 for like 6 years. During that 6 years, I would occasionally have a cigarette when I was drinking. Drinking bone is connected to the smoking bone afterall.

Then it went from while in a bar to I'll have a beer at home just so I can have a cigarette and no looking back from there.

I actually don't smoke that much compared to a lot of smokers because I limit where I do it. I won't smoke in my car or in my house. Because of that, I end up only smoking 6 or 7 cigarettes a day.

Still, it's a nasty habit that I will quit again someday. You have to be ready to quit.
BigDMcGee
I've been having a pattern since I started smoking.. that' I'll quit for between 6 months and 1-1/2 years. Then I'll get depressed, and start smoking again, smoke for a few months, then quit again. The quitting is the worst. I quit again last month, it's been about 4 weeks now. The first week was pure hell. It's really hard to explain the phyisical need. When I'm quitting, it's all ( for the most part) phyicial need, pain and misery. Then, after all that's gone, it's the psychological will power to keep not smoking. Once yo uget threw these few weeks, don't in the future trick yourself into thinking you can have a cigarrete now, and then, or it's a special occacion, or what ever. You can't. you'll be back smoking again. I also have to quit poker when I quit smoking.. I've just started playing again after a month off while I quit. Bad beat= smoke. I've tried to quit and keep playing poker while I quit, and I just cant. I play like shit cause I'm so phyically miserable, and I just end up smoking.

That's probably true for most guys that find women that smoke hot.

Guys that like clean, prim, proper girl next doors aren't going to get it.

I, too, am attracted to people who are generally fucked up.

That's easy. That's because he's not fucked up in an interesting way that I could spend hours torturing myself over. Psychological and emotionally fucked up is interesting to analyze.

He's just strange.

Good question on whoever asked why people start smoking in the first place....I imagine most people say it is peer pressure or to look cool. I'm sure it's a combination of those things for me and just a way to rebel, as I had no interest in any rules or regulations of any kind when I was 15. 8 years later, I still smoke way too much every day. The only advice I can give to someone who hasn't started is to never touch one. I smoke and I can't stand it. And sadly enough I am writing this as I light a cigarette....ugh.

I never really thought about it, but this is true for me as well.

I can't seem to figure out why all of my ex's are "crazy''.

I'm a fixer.

It's a horrible trait.

But, you'll have that.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
