I'm confused about what to do next. As far as I know, Button is sane.

Fold any turn that doesn't give you additional outs.

I think the button has a set. Checkfold the turn, unless you pick up a draw.

my effective odds 5.5 to 1 or better assuming i don't have to call two cold on turn or river.

are you that certain that Button has a set or better?

Well, I'm not a Limit Hold Em expert,but it looks like it. YOu said that he seemed sane, and just look at the betting on the flop.

First, he called 2 bets cold, then capped it. It is a really bizarre play IMO, but it seems like he was trying to slow play. Plus, he limped in,so I would not be surprized at all if he had 66 or 77.

Button usually has a monster/a strong draw.

I'm usually just calling the flop raise in this situation and reevaluating the turn. Too many bad cards can come that fill straights, flushes, overcards, etc...

My guesses are a set, 98, 76, or two club overcards. My money is on 98, though, with an unusual slowplay attempt on the flop (i.e. a small mistake on Button's part). If you don't pick up a club, you are likely toast. If the board pairs, you probably have two outs only, but maybe you should call down in case YHIG against two high clubs or 76 (especially if the T pairs up).

I think you should consider a broader range of hands for Villain:

sets: 66, 77, TT (9 combos total)
two pairs: T7, T6, 67 (27 combos total, although first two are unlikely)
straight: 89 (16 combos)
nut flush draws: Axc (9 combos)
pair and flush draw: Txc (8 combos)
OESFD: 4c5c, 5c8c (2 combos)
gutshot and flush draw: 8xc, 9xc (10 combos)

plus maybe some overpairs or weaker draws

against the sets and straights, i'm drawing slim

against two pairs i have more outs

and i'm ahead against the rest

It's pretty clear to me that MP3 is on a flush draw, or maybe TPGK. I'm just unsure of button. Calling 2 cold and then capping when MP3 neglects to cap so screams monster looking for value. It could be a monster draw, of course (flush+overs, OESFD).

why did you 3-bet the flop?

That's a good question. Surprised no one asked it sooner.

I'm not sure what the right course of action is. The board is pretty coordinated, but an ugly turn could still give me a redraw to a straight or a flush.

I'm OOP and usually ahead on the flop, so once Button cold calls, I figure I might as well get more bets in now.

If you don't 3-bet, how do you make more (or lose less) on subsequent streets?

I don't know...it's something I really have a problem with.

It seems to me that a flop 3-bet would be for value, but it also seems a lot like the two overpair hands section of SSHE. This example seems like when you have TT and should wait.

When a safe card comes, I usually have no problems. However, when a scare card comes, I'm usually at a loss as to what course of action to take. If the action gets too heavy in front of you, you can obviously fold. If say, an overcard comes, I think you would be better off just calling if it goes bet-call. If a flush or straight card comes, you will probably have to call with your redraw.
