this is an idea I came up with a few weeks ago, I've tried it with some decent success, but not the kind I was hoping for.
Don't play the cards you have, play the cards you wish you hand. The most important concept in razz, are up cards. What do you need, what do you want to avoid. while this is important in 7-card stud, it is not near as important as it is in razz. I'm sure we all have stories of starting out with 3 to a staright flush, catching 4 to a staright flush, then not being able to chase down a pair of Jacks. This is not the case in razz, since nobody has a made hand until 5th street, and every razz player has a story where they hand to showdown K,4,3,2,A.
So my theory is, use that to you advantage, count the out cards. if I am showing a card under a 5, and their are 1-2 other cards under an 8, raise. It doesn't matter what you hole cards are, you opponents can't see them. If you catch good on 4th and perhaps they don't, or even if they do, bet out, or raise. if I am raising with 2 cards under a 5, someone drawing to a 7 will have a hard time calling a raise, or at least they should.
if they call a bet on 5th, your probably scewed and should try to minimize your losses. However, if you can get people at the table thinking your a loss canon, you thinks razz is like playing slots, your liable to make the money you loss on this "don't look at my hole cards statagy" in a monster pot later, when other players think your playing razz as an alternative to slots.
this is just an elaborate explaination of ante-stealing. but I think this can be used as a technique to find a few more hands play an hour. My expirence with this was I came out about even on the small pots, winning some by 5th street, lossing some that went check-check-check-check on 6th and 7th, but the big payoff was when I'd win a monster pot with a wheel or a smooth 6 when I was showing 3,4,2,6. i never would have gotten that kind of action if I kept up my facade of only playing quality starting hands. i want my opponents to think that I could have anything.
