The pot has 1000 in it, I bet out 800, 80% of pot.
Board reads 9
I have in my hand :
A
It is now heads up. I am playing against a guy who thinks he is gods gift to poker, He is getting 18 : 8 or approximately 9 : 4 for the call. I hoped that he had 2 pair, a lower flush or a set.
He then gave me a pop quiz about his hand, telling me that hand reading is the most important skill in the game. He called the flop bet of 800 then folded when I bet 80% pot on the turn. I told him that he obviously had a set... He congratulated me on working out his hand. He then told me that I should have bet pot because if I let him call then I could lose the hand.
Don't I want him to call in this spot drawing to T, 99, 444. He has to hit one of 6 outs and for 9:4 it's obviously not worth it?
I thought that I would humour him and just agree with whatever he said, at the end of the day he ain't paying me for lessons so why should I teach him?
Is my thinking here right?
