I'm interning in DC for a Senator on the Judiciary Committee...and all I can say is that we're going to have a rather busy session.

My first reaction to the news: fuck.

Oh man.....

I never thought that "Chief Justice Rehnquist is dead" would ever be a liberal's worst nightmare, but....

This is probably my worst nightmare

Agreed.

As well as a few others.

I didn't hate Rehnquist, though I'm gonna hate whomever is appointed to replce him as an associate justice.

Who is first in line for the chief justiceship now??

to an extent I agree, but it will be very hard for bush to push through a justice as conservative as Scalia or Thomas in the current climate. Needless to say, I'm not banking on a 9th district judge being sworn in, but if bush has any clue(and this is a big if) then he'd appoint a center left justice to go along with roberts

I hope so, but if the Repubican party really wanted to make a stand and support a well qualified justice who leans pretty far to the right, they could.

I'm not optimistic.

very true. of course any justice will be a wild card, as when Nixon appointed Blackmun he got the opposite of what he expected, cause Blackmun was one of the key figures to getting RoevWade pushed through

Sorry about his families loss. But Bush is going to F_up Kennedy, Boxer, Dean and the rest of the ass hat Democratic Party. This is a great time for Republicans. Looks Like I will get to keep my guns and more of my paycheck for quite some time.

I'll be in D.C. tomorrow thru Wed. and then Newport/Foxwoods the rest of next week. Gonna be interesting to be in the capitol during all of this national upheaval!

Best...

Everytime there's a tax cut, where do you think that money comes from? Federal funding. Funding for what?

Education
Public Services (Police, Paramedics, Fire)
Help for the poor

Education is underfunded as it is - the more tax cuts we have, the less intelligent the nation's children will be.

Please show me one study that has a direct link to funding = better grades. Just one please. Pouring money into education doesn't improve grades.

drastically cutting it doesn't help either. ONe of the first things always on the chopping block is the arts, namely music programs, and this is a massive loss. Music is a great way for at risk kids to do positive stuff and it also is a way to get kids involved in something positive, now try to argue against me on that one, I'd love to hear the bullshit that you will spew against it(also note, there is no changing my mind on this, cause I was a music major my first two years in college)

Screw that. You want studies? Find them yourself, you lazy bum. You've got google. I'm giving you the truth. If you don't want to believe it, that's your own problem.

And as a legal scholar, I must say this. The Chief Justice does not really have all that much importance in comparison to the other Justices of the Supreme Court. True, the CJ is the lead of the internal meetings of the justices, but that is about all. The CJ still only gets one vote, just the same as everyone else.

That being said....this is a bad, bad day for liberals, which includes myself. I really don't see Bush being a good guy about this and appointing any sort of center/left or even center candidate. He didn't with O'Connor, who was centrist herself. Rehnquist was the pillar of conservatism on the Court for decades -- No reason for Bush not to appoint another conservative in his place. This is especially true if Bush appoints someone like Roberts, who is tough to fight against because of his history and image.

I don't know. I'll be in the Senate for the confirmation hearings for Roberts on Tuesday. this just adds another wringle. I'm praying for anyone remotely like Ginsburg or Souter...remotely like them.

Regardless of which side of the fence that anyone sits on, this is a sad moment for the US. He was a good man that voted for what he believed in.

God bless.

I can show you 100 that show a link between POVERTY and worse grades. You know POVERTY, right? That's the state people are put in when their services get cut, their ability to declare bankruptcy to escape 29% credit card debt is removed, and their taxed heavily to compensate for giving millionaires huge tax cuts.

Wealthy kids have higher achievement than poorer kids. Money certainly is the problem. If you want to help education, give poor people money.

Oh wait. That wasn't the answer you wanted to hear, right? You wanted to hear that it was new fangled teaching techniques that were the problem, right? That it was teachers unions perserving the jobs of bad teachers? Beuracracy, right?

Well, it's not. It's poverty.

Now go back to your ussual brainwashing session where you don't have to actually think about root causes for things and can be suckered into thinking that you paying for tax cuts for me is the best thing for you.

Bend over, now, little Republican. Thaaat's right. You like that, don't you? Of course you do.

Mr. Liberal, Would a democrat vote for someone that was in the middle? Not a democrat 20 yrs ago but a democrat by todays standards.

Who cares?

There's zero chance of this administration appointing anyone even vaguely moderate.
rapperwilly
I think Bush will appoint a minority into the Supreme Court and very likely an African American considering how he is so far currently butchering the Katrina aftermath. But most likely it will be a Condelezza Rice type person and definitely a conservative that goes without question. Last thing Bush needs is another headache like trying to overturn Roe v. Wade (though he definitely would if he had the authority)

Two seperate points:
1) Bush should appoint an originalist he has the sole power and it is his constitutional duty
2) Teh art duerd has some problems. There is evidence that throwing money at a school doesn't work. what should be done is control teachers and remove tenure. futhermore are gets cut first because it is clearly the most useless. There are so few jobs in art.

Poor peoples taxes were never rased to pay for wealthy tax cuts, they don't pay income tax at all in fact they get tax credits for taxes they never paid.

And why do you resort to name calling when someone makes a point you don't like?

Man, someone has lost their cool. There has been many of programs where money has been dumped into and nothing changes. Here is a little info for you left wing ass: Atlanta spends over $10,000 a year per student and delivers one of the worst products in the nation. This is my hometown.

**News Flash this is why you guys don't win elections** The hatred that spews from you mouth turns off the educated people who actually vote. Kerry couldn't beat a man that was in the middle of a losing war and had a troubled economy. SO keep taking notes from the Michael Moore's and Howard Dean's of your party, cause it's working just fine.

No, I will assure you that at least right now Roe v. Wade will not be an issue. He will have to unite America and not divide it. Though he will not have to go through a presidential election again, if Iraq keeps on goin like it is and if Bush doesn't apologize DIRECTLY to the black people for the slow response and try and mend their hatred towards Bush. He will lose seats in the senate and in the house. Roe v. Wade being overturned will most definitely turn many voters away from the Republicans. There is almost a zero chance of this, but impeachment has happened before. And all it takes is that 2/3=66.7% and it could all go bad. If I were Bush (thank god I'm not), I'd get as many african americans in influential positions as I could, employ a nixon like vietnamization aka get the **** outta Iraq, and work on America- more jobs, eilminate poverty. Else Hillary Clinton might very well be the first female president of the United States in 3 years.
