I donated my winnings yesterday to the Red Cross, $2,325. I feel that a lot of people who lost their homes deserve help rebuilding a life they worked hard for. However, I do not fully understand the pity party being thrown for the people dying in the area. They were given ample time and warning to evacuate, yet refused to do so. In fact many of the people who refused to evacuate did so because they intended to loot local stores. FOX news decided to spin this story as "people trying to find a means to survive." However, I hardly believe a local man run down the street with a bag full of jewelry after looting a jewelry store was trying to find necessities to survive. Some of these yahoos have looted stores for stolen guns, and even fired at helicopters. I do not think it is a coincidence that many of the people who stayed behind to loot are the ones with the least to loose. Poor people living in government housing. So while i feel a great sadness for all the people who have been adversely affected by this tragedy, I feel little pity for the majority of the people who stayed behind, and as a result are dying or near death.
Edit: Also, I forgot to mention the looters were attacking hospitals trying to steal drugs.

I commend you on your donation sir.
And, yes, some people didn't leave because they were tryinig to ride the storm out...but you have GOT to understand that probably more than 3/4 of these people HAD NO WAY OUT....they dont have the money, car, or means to leave the city.
this is ridiculous...

FOX news decided to spin this story.
Gee, does this come as a big shock to anyone??
If it does, check out the documentary "Outfoxed"
it's on Amazon.com for like $12.
If anyone's seen it, it makes watching Fox News
a whole new experience.

But what exactly is shooting at helicopters going to accomplish? Someone please tell me.

Nice winnings yesterday! Even nicer deciding to donate! I partly agree with you although instead of many decided to stay behind to loot should read a few. There are after all still 50 000 left in the city.

There are 50,000 people trapped out of a population of 1,500,000 or so residents. You can check that at www.census.gov. These people had plenty of time and ample warning to escape. Many of them could have walked out of town when given the first warning. So roughly 3% of the city population chose to stay. I think if you look at any city in any nation you will find that about 3% are less then intelligent, and probably a similar number look for an opportunity benefit themselves at the expense of others. So to your less then intelligent response, it is their fault they are stuck in this situation with exception to those not physically able to leave.
Now try coming up with a real response, or step down in limits small timer.

why are you even typing then? youre the one who started the discussion on the poor people. you're also the one trying to say they only stay behind so they can loot and steal. thats real intelligent ass. give some more statistics, please yes with the census and all. they have no money, no way out period. would you want to walk more than 100 miles to safety? theyd be halfway to safety by the time the hurricane hit.
yes i understand and agree that some of them REFUSED to go, but come on? walking to safety? thats almost arbitrary.
say, they walked 100 miles to a hotel. what now? they have no money for renting a room. get real.

I love how people say, " just because they were poor doesn't mean they couldn't leave"
Where are they going to go? Live with relatives in another state? Hey just go to a hotel, I am sure they will just let them in without paying for a room. Lets just get into my car...oh yeah...I can't drive it because it's under 10 ft of water.
You people really have no idea what being poor really is like. When you have nothing of your own and no one around to help you out.
The really sad part about this is people were told to go to these major sites in NO because they were supposed to be safe and the government would help them. What happened? Yeah 5 days later and just today they got a few bags of ice and some water dropped off to them. Why don't you try to live in 90 degree heat with no clean water, no food, no electricity, and no working toliets, nowhere to sleep, and see how you are fairing afterwards.

We all know there is a ton of crazy stuff that is going on New Orleans. However, my guess is that about 1% of the people there are causing 99% of the probems. I can't blame a dad that goess and gets some diapers for his child or a matress for his pregnant wife to sleep on. There is a criminal element in every city or small town, people looking to abuse or take advantage of any situation, even a catastrophy(aka. the guy with the jewels or the other guy with a garage full of TV's). Maybe that element stayed in the city to do take advantage of people and truly be scum. However, I believe that the majority of the people who are there, even the people who chose to stay, hoping to just "ride out the storm", made a mistake but not a mistake that they should be going through this for. I am tremendously heartbroken in the way these people have been abandoned for several days. I can't believe we as a country are this unprepared for a tragedy of this magitude after 9/11. Very disapointing.

We have 3 churches in that area- as far as I know they are all gone. However, everybody in every congregation except for a few who worked for utilities left and are staying with neighboring congregations- natural disasters happen, and god helps those who helps themselves. God is great and good, that does not change because the earth did it's thing. I often wonder what kind of simple mind cannot trust god but willingly blames god if things go wrong- you take the good with the bad, that is just life.

I'm not a very religious guy, but i have to say that one cannot trash religion or faith because of natural disasters and death...it is a natural and necessary part of the world and life in general. People die. It is a necessary part of life. Suffering and death are inevitable and important aspects of life.

I have a lot of friends who live in New Orleans (birthplace of poker and jazz). Through forums like this we're collecting info and figuring things out and preparing for the specific aid needs. We had some real practice the first time with 9.11 - I recommend everyone have a real
emergency plan for situations like this.
I blame the problems going on due to improper management by authorities. There are just not prepared for such a large scale disaster - and they should have been. New Orleans is a colorful town but I think the tipping point came from management issues. Think Seattle at WTO or LA during riots. I fully believe that Las Vegas and NYC are the only cities that can really handle major crisises. I'm not so sure about Washington, D.C. either short of a total disaster. This is my loose opinion now and I am not directly tied into this situation, but I did disaster recovery for a few years in NYC - some of my plans were used after 9/11.
Meanwhile, for now I'm throwing a brunch. One of the guests is from NO. I'm sure she'll have a lot to say about this.
As for religion, I was tempted to write something about it and blame it all on the hubris of American Christianity who typically use this type of situation to wail on the sins of others but temperance held me back. For those that don't know, I used to be a pastor (Protestant). Sometimes you like at a horrible misfortune like this and wonder how there can be a God. But, sometimes this is the type of situation where one cannot help but believe in God. YMMV.

Biijy,
It is completely apparent to and me everyone else that you are a complete fucking moron. You probably come from a priviledged backround and had all the opportunities in life. You sit on your fat ass and play poker. Good for you. But were you actually serious about people walking out of town? Do you really believe that to be an option? What about the sick, infirmed, dying? Should they get pushed out of town. You probably don't live in a place that gets hurricanes either. Oh, let me guess, they deserved it b/c they live in N.O. You tried to sound charitible by claiming you donated then went on a tirade about how most don't deserve it.
Journalists are going to capture the bad people b/c that is what leads the headlines. Are there some people doing bad things? Yes. That is society. Most people are just trying to survive. Imagine this for a moment. You wake up tomorrow with NOTHING but the clothes on your back. Not your prescious computer. Not your car. No wardrobe. NO NOTHING. Just what is in the bank (for most of those people that is nothing b/c they are poor) and the clothes on your back. What is going on in N.O. would happen in a white neighborhood as well. (trust me, I got the race card you were playing) The looting. Their is no excuse for the shooting, but again, there are a few bad apples everywhere. That is life.
Your post, while trying to come off as magnanimous. merely made you come off like an elitist pig.
You may be rich in the wallet, but you are poor in the heart.
I do pity you.
Good day sir.

N.O. is a disaster, but honostly, lets look at the facts.
- The place is below sea level, every day they are essentially pumping out water from a sinking ship. Even before the hurricane, it was a losing battle that was not going to get any easier as global warming raises the water levels.
- Should a town get built at the base of a volcano, and then when a warning is sent out that the volcano is about to errupt, and nobody leaves, and a ton of people get killed by the lava, and the entire city gets demolished, should we then say Ooooo its such a tradgedy, it wasnt their fault! They didnt think the volcano was going to errupt, just as nobody trhought the water would raise high enough to flood their houses.
- Furthermore, should we then repair the entire town again, just because oh well, we did it before, lets do it again! Is there any chance at all, even the slightest, that it was a stupid mistake to build something on a volcano (Or below sea level in this case)
- Havent we been shown time and time again that no matter what, nature will OWN you? No matter how fortified your house is, its not going to last a category 5 hurricane, or a massive tornado, just as no matter what you do, your NOT going to stop a flood, and your NOT going to stop a friggin tsunami.
- The simple solution since the very beginning when humans were back in caveman times... If you cant win the fight, dont fight it, run. Believe it or not, theres a saying about running away to live another day.
*** OBVIOUSLY this does not apply to those who are unable to walk/move/breathe without being in a hospital. To put it simply, theres no way that everyone can be saved. Believe it or not, you spend less resources, time, and effort rescuing HEALTHY YOUNG PEOPLE. Sadly, we do not have the resources to save everyone, that is impossible, but we can save MOST people. Resources being such things as Helicopters. It takes a looonnnnggg time just to go back and forth with one helecoptor to save 2 people because apparently that is the ammount of unhealthy people that they have been carrying. It is not possible to rescue everyone, it is possible, and more practical, to save people who are young, and more likely to survive in the coming weeks. Sadly, there is little that they can do to save people who were in hospitols and wheelchairs, Accept it, it is a trajedy.
-Black people are seriously complaining and calling it a racial issue? Are you kidding me? do they have to slap a racial issue on every single problem in their lives? This is how they see it
"I was told to leave, because my entire city was in danger of being flooded. Obviously, I know best, so I stayed, and I got flooded! I cant believe it, how did this happen, this is terrible! Oh no, I got ordered to leave but I didnt. I didnt leave because I got ordered, and nobody tells me what to do. I cant believe it, I want all you people to come here right now, teleport NOW I demand! It doesnt matter if im retarded for staying, and getting flooded! Im going to complain and complain and complain until I get what i want, cause thats all I ever do. Thats how I was raised, thats how my parents were raised, and thats how im raising my children! Complain and call people racist until they do something about it!"
-Could you expect anything different? They complain and complain and call everyone racist, and they STILL get help.***They shoot at helicoptors, and ambulances, making their rescue more difficult. They steal from stores, and chant and chant about how they need help. Am I the only one that sees a problem with that?

I do not feel that bad for all of the morons that lived in New Orleans. I have always said that living there was tempting fate. It is like living in LA and being surprised when an earquake hits. The only difference here is a hurricane gives you days to prepare. I guess I will never understand human nature.
Now I am suppose to donate money to these people...I think not! I am already going to foot the bill (along with the rest of the US) to drain the stupid place so they can do it all over again.
They might as well go live in an active volcano.
Do I have compassion for human life...yes, but we seem to ignore the obvious error in judgement.
You will never see me donating to such causes...it just perpetuates the stupidity of living there.
If I was in charge I would walk away from the city. I would rather have the government buyout all land owners in NO vs. cleaning up!

Actually you are the one that is saying nothing factual - it is tantalar that is right on. New Orleans IS sitting in a bowl so why rebuild to only let it happen again. Also, many of these folks had 3 days warning of this possible disaster and while not all could get out MANY of them could have. So in one breath they say "I'm riding this one out" and then in the next breath "where is the damn government to help me." Has our nation spoiled us to the point that we expect them to bail us out in an instant?

i would rather have the gov take a closer look at the bill sent to congress 2 weeks ago.
had our levees not broken the city would be only as bad as the next (slidell, kenner, picayune.)
i hope i meet you so you can look my son in the face and tell him that you are happy that he has no clothes or toys ...or happy now that he has to sleep on the floor of friends houses and go to new schools where he knows no one.
also i hope i meet you so i can punch you in the face.

Complain and call people censored until they do something about it!"
-Could you expect anything different? They complain and complain and call everyone censored, and they STILL get help.***They shoot at helicoptors, and ambulances, making their rescue more difficult. They steal from stores, and chant and chant about how they need help. Am I the only one that sees a problem with that?
Wow dude you summed up black people
pefectly.
Thank you.

Pleas explain how a bill that was changed 2 weeks ago has ANYTHING to do with what happened with the flood? Do you think that all of a sudden just because theres a reduced ammount of spending that the levees are WEAKENED?
Its like saying that because 2 week ago they reduced the spending on the levees that its like they were taken apart for scraps. Even if they didnt cut back spending on the levees, the effects of the spending decrease had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with stoppoing or NOT stopping the water from flooding the city, are you stupid? And what the hell, what kind of a parent is online talking to people on a poker website when he should be comforting his son, and out doing everything possible with him, and for him to get him through this rough time?
Maybe you can explain to your son that your a bad parent, and that the reason he is in the situation he is in is because his dad dcided to live in the stupidest place in the USA at the Supidest time. Im sick of STUPID people telling me to feel sorry for their STUPID mistakes. You should shut your dirty mouth and be fortunate that our government is so nice, and that the system takes tax dollars from the smart and gives them to the stupid(like you) who are incapable of paying for themself.
You should just shut up, because nobody HAS TO help you, or your dam city. The reason we ARE helping you is because your AMERICANS just like us. Its the RIGHT THING TO DO, and thats why we are doing it. We arent going to stop doing it. And personally, I dont think I should have to pay for your mistakes. Any more complaining about the lack of help, or the lack of anything else, and you should be shot in the face. Theres people out there 24/7 trying to help, and theres ungreatful people like you out there. Why dont you go help instead of posting stuff on a poker forum?

What a ridiculous and uninformed comment. That's like blaming the victims of 9/11 for working in a place that's an obvious terror target. You think the citizens of NO spent their time thinking about how they lived in a place that could be a victim or a horrible natural disaster? People have to live somewhere, and unfortunately these are the consequences-the consequences will be the same when the big one finally occurs in California. It doesn't mean we should blame people for living there.

lets all realize why New Orleans is there. It is The port. Every decesion is about that port. Should the city be there? No Imo. When flooding gets worse as each year ticks by and yet Developers still develop. Oh yeah the government and everyone says its will flood but i think these warning are worthless. because it is so dangerous to live there ppl shouldn't be living there and the fact that the government has allowd ppl to live in New Orleans is a huge mistake on the US government's part.
Someone talked about insurance. Did you know you can get earthquake insurance in Los Angeles. I don't think you can get flood insuracne in all of Louisanna. hmm?
Did you know the port news says they are already considering a permant shutting CLOSING of the Port of New Orleans. This could lead to economic devastation in the region.
The next 20-30 years could be a mass exodus from the lower south to the mid west etc. The governnment needs to get working on helping permantly relocate ppl in trouble.
IMO Kanye spoke up for a just cause.
p.s. I am a former 4-5 year resident of Baton Rouge and I have experienced floods there.
p.s.2 Which countries are running to aid the US in this time of need?

CrAcKeDaCeS...
We are talking about natural disasters here. It was not anyones fault for working at the WTC in NY. The place was bombed before, yes, but we are talking about something that we KNOW is going to happen. It is a fact that New orleans is GOING TO BE FLOODED. It is not a fact that Building A, B, C and D are going to get BOMBED. It IS however a fact that when you build a building on the edge of a cliff, and the land around it errodes into nothing, the house will fall into the ocean. And just as that house will fall into the ocean, the city of New orleans will be flooded!
Its not the first time that the place has been flooded. if it wasnt for the artificial means of keeping the water out of the city, it would have been permenantly flooded a long time ago.
Its like a newspaper article I read today, you cant stop a 2,000 pound gorilla, it goes where it wants, and does what it wants. You dont get in its way, or it will kill you. Your not going to stop nature when it reaches its maxium strength. It is VERY easy, and VERY factual that New Orleans will be flooded again soon if they re build it. Can you seriously be this stupid? Its like building a city ontop of a volcano that hasnt errupted in 50 years. Its just a stupid idea, dont do it! How can you possibly make a link between new orleans and what happened at 9/11? the WTC was not going to get flooded, Burned down by a forest fire, knocked out by a tornado or a hurricane. It wasnt going to fall over from galeforce winds. the ONLY threat was a terrorist attack. And despite what so many propaganda freaks out there say, 99% of the time it is IMPOSSIBLE to know where a terrorist will strike. so just accept it, you are wrong, I am right.
come on, your arguement is like saying that youd go all in with KK against my AA because sometimes youll win, soommeeetimmesss everything will be alright, even if most of the time, its not alright

Tantalar-
I'm not disagreeing with you that NO was eventually going to flood, I think everyone can agree with that. The government officials knew it, and yes, it probably was a bad place to build a city.
However-is this the fault of the poor people who lived there and couldn't evacuate?? Let's assume for a second that half of these people were born in New Orleans...and born into poverty. Do you really think that they can afford to move a better place? They're just a victim of their own circumstances. While I'm all for blaming the people who didn't do anything to prepare for this, and the ones who aren't helping fast enough...I don't think you can blame the ones who were too poor to move or evacuate.

Here's the thing. Why make a rational, well thought out, articulate arguement to someone who obviously has no brain power and sticks to the "they were asking for it by living there" point of view? Your statement hit it on the head. But someone who probably has never seen or lived true poverty has no idea what your talking about. All they know is mommy and daddy always got them what they wanted. Therefore, you wasted your keystrokes on a presumably spoiled moron. I enjoyed reading it though.
Good day.
