With the onslaught of poker on TV people are exposed to players that play a loose aggressive strategies. This may work in advance poker tournaments, but will leave the newbie broke, before he can form a true appreciation for the game of poker. Adopting a tight aggressive style will help the newbie become profitable. These are strategies that are promoted in beginner books by Helmuth, Jones, and Krieger, and Warren. Now Barry’s book takes off, where these book end.
It’s not a book that has formulas for calculating pots odds under all condition but it has advice that will help you make decisions during each betting round. 52 Tips by Barry Shulman of Card Player Magazine fame is an easy reading book with lots of tips on holdem poker for the beginner and a few in there that intermediate and advance player may want to add to their repertoire. I have studied several poker books by Jones, Sklansky, Mason, Caro, Bronson, so when I first read it, there were some tips that were in the DUH category. This means that I seen them before and they have become ingrain into my game.
To me these book really compliments Lee Jones, Low limits Holdem. This book is filled with good advice that will help new players, step out their game, at tables fill with newbie fishes, just waiting to hand you their money. If you are looking for a good second book to read, this is a good one. That’s not to say more advance player wouldn’t appreciate this book. It will help you crystallize your ideas that you have formulated in a more concise way and help affirm ideas that you have about your play.
