The Senators and Hurricanes have kicked things off in fine fashion for mini-deadline day:

To Carolina:

I think its a great pickup for Ottawa, he will be a really nice 2nd/3rd line guy for them.

i m not sure..I think you got a good dman who is an RFA so salary will be good...
Cullen is a 33 year old UFA who has only 12 goals..Good guy though.
I am hoping this means we get the same if not more for Pony...

I think we got someone who might have a good salary, but not necessarily a good D-man.
I would have preferred just one of those, either a better propect or a better pick.
Cullen will produce in Ottawa, book it.

The buzz is that Pony might be heading for Buffalo, but I'm not sure I buy it. Can't see Toronto and Buffalo trading within the division for a player that actually matters (ie: Not Dominic Moore).

This from my cousin in Montreal last night....
Dominic Moore! OOOOO!!! big improvement. Actually the rumour is Frolov to Montreal for either Weber, D'Agostini or maybe Lapierre. Just what the doctor ordered, another big lazy russian talent/enigma.
I love the last line. Frolov really does remind me a lot of Kovalev in some ways.

If you wanted a better prospect, Carolina needed to make that deal with basically any team other than Ottawa. They're the Whalers of the NHL when it comes to farm depth.

Good deal for any Picard owners in fantasy leagues, IMO.
Don't like the deal for Ottawa, but seems like 2nd-rounders are being bandied about more easily than usual this year. I guess scouts don't love the guys who'll be available in the 50-65 range.

why would either team care about trading in their division? These are two teams in vastly different stages of development, no?
And if your the Leafs, you trade with ANYONE when your dumping FA's.
My personal belief.....limiting your market in trading is the best way to never get any better.

Guess they got no takers for Jason Williams then. Without looking I would think they send Meech down. He is pretty invisible out there. Wonder if he is on a one way.
So now they are speculating that Kronwall goes on Long Term and Lebda or Meech get traded because I don't think waiving May and IR'ing Kronwall gets the $ part done for Lilja. Weird. Plus, why bring Lilja up for one game before the break. Makes no sense but whatever. We need to trade for a goalie who can win a shootout since neither Howard or Osgood can get that part done.

You watch, somehow Hudler is going to rejoin the Wings right after the FCHL season ends.
Speaking of him, was he declared ineligible for international play or did he truly just not make the Czech team?

I thought there was some issue with him not getting a transfer card from the IIHF after leaving the NHL and going to Moscow which prohibits him from playing in any international tournament. Haven't paid that much attention to him.

You guys should watch him play sometimes.....it wouldnt shock you at all.
Im honestly pretty suprised it took them this long, or that they believed he was never gonna get claimed, and they didnt want him in the minors.
He's bad out there. Its really hard to explain it, other than, I dont see anything other than a 4th liner, maybe an ok 3rd liner, when I watch him now.
I watched a lot of SJ the year Thornton got traded there, and I honestly believed the chemistry was from both of them, that while Cheechoo benefitted the most, Thornton was getting some help from Cheechoo too. I was not one of those who believed Cheechoo's talent was all Joe T. Either I was wrong, or something is really wrong with Cheechoo, phsyically or mentally.

You're like the most negative person ever.
This is a great pickup for the Sens.
Cullen isn't a goal scorer, so of course you bring up his 12 goals.
He has 40 points in 60 games. That's a pretty darn good pace in today's NHL, for a guy who is a tweener top 6 type forward.
Picard has been mediocre at best in Ottawa, being a healthy scratch about 1/4 of the time. He's been outplayed by everyone here.
Picard + 2nd might be slight overpayment, but they got a good player. I think it's a better deal that the Moore to MTL deal.

Well, if the Leafs had traded for Cullen he'd be an overlooked underutilized top flight talent who will take over a spot on the top-six and score 65 points per year minimum, so at least he's predictable.

I think Picard will do better in Carolina. I also think this is a good for Carolina because they can resign Cullen in the off-season.
Since I have Picard on my team I follow him as best I can and it seems a change might be good. Could be another Joe Corvo. When he is on he is pretty good, easily top 4 guy, but when he is bad he seems to be bad and being the 7th D man in Ott might not be helping him. Who knows but I like the move for Carolina.

Getting traded as the main piece of a deal for Cam Barker isn't bad for your career prospects. Chicago wasn't dealing for Johnsson there, it was combination salary dump and picking up a good prospect who is a ways away.

I kinda like the move by the Hawks, I liked Barker on the Hawks, but I guess better him than someone else. I'm actually surprised the Wild went this route, I think they drafted Leddy too high just because he was a star in high school hockey and a local favorite. Leddy seems to be in the mold of Duncan Keith, if he can crack the lineup in the next 5 years, that would give you Keith, Campbell and Leddy as three crazy fast d-men.
For some reason, Q-Stache didn't like Barker on the powerplay. He was great during last years playoffs on the pp, but for some reason Buff has been on the point along with Keith or Campbell.

But that works both ways....if your a team looking to dump a rental player who is playing the Olympics, you might be more tempted to take an offer today, both in fear the player gets hurt and because you dont want to pay him the next 2weeks.

Wouldn't be applicable. Any trade done today wouldn't be completed until a physical is passed, and any GM with a brain would schedule the physical after the olympics if the player in question was playing. Therefore, you trade for Crosby (to pick someone randomly LOL), he wouldnt report today, the trade curfew and travel would ship him to Vancouver for the games, and he blows his knee. He therefore wouldnt pass the physical after the olympics, deal is nullified. A player isn't added to your roster until after he passes a physical.

True but if I own the rental I'm going to risk it if I'm not getting my price since the market for my rental player may be larger after the Olympics if teams are looking to replace a player who gets injured in the Olympics as well.

That would be true if there wasn't a full schedule of games on Sat and Sun in the NHL and also the team trading him away isn't going take on all the risk of injury, they'll just wait until after the Olympics then when the market will be larger for that player.
Edit: or do you have some sort of information that teams are looking to do that ?

its all a matter of risk/reward, and how much your willing to gamble, if you think its much of a gamble at all.
if you thought you got close to your price, you might take it, to cover yourself.
