JJ Abrams and Tom Cruise?! Should be interesting.

Visit My Website

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures today has clinched its deal with Tom Cruise to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible 4. Cruise will produce the film with J.J. Abrams. They are looking for a director, but screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are already attached to write the script. The intention is to make this Cruise's next film and start shooting by summer for a Memorial Day 2011 weekend release. And I can definitively say that, despite chatter to the contrary, IM4 will be very much of an Ethan Hunt pic with Cruise as the main character. Gee, remember the bad old days when Cruise and Paramount parent company Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone were on the outs? Guess that old Hollywood saying is as true as ever: "I'll never work with him again -- until I need him." I hear Paramount is really excited about relaunching the franchise, which has grossed over $1.4 billion globally. “Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise,” said Paramount Pictures Chairman & CEO Brad Grey. I'm told the MI4 deal has been restructured (i.e. brought down to earth) to make it more like recent Industry tentpole deals where everyone shares the risk. MI4 is being co-financed by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions. Cruise just completed the film Knight and Day for 20th Century Fox with a July 2nd release date. It has James Mangold directing and Cameron Diaz co-starring.

I hope they kill off Cruise's character.
Iphonenkinder
I was so disappointed to hear they're making another MI movie. I keep thinking of Cruise in Collateral and Magnolia. I thought he was going to continue picking interesting projects.
Moneyball16
Good news. MI3 was pretty good.

JJ should direct though.

Fuck that...Abrams needs to be focusing on directing and producing the next Star Trek.

People really need to start consulting me before making these kinds of decisions.

I liked the new Star Trek, but I keep thinking about the two worst parts--the very beginning, with the planet dying and the human birth and OHMYGOD I get it! I get it!!

And then when teen Kirk is driving real fast and is all dangerous and rebellious, why oh why is he listening to the Beastie Boys?

I was talking about the new Mission Impossible movie, and some issues I had with the director's previous movie.

And I was talking about Tom Cruise, and how I think he's parking his career choices on Mediocre Cul de Sac.

I had completely forgotten. I remember the first movie, with the descent from the ceiling. The second movie had short Tom Cruise wearing a John Woo trench coat, which made him look even shorter. What happened in the third?

I actually thought MI3 was pretty good/not bad at all.

He had to save his wife from the evil Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

I like Tom Cruise too.

Valkyrie
Tropic Thunder (wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be)
Mission: Impossible III (enjoyed it throughout. PSH was a kickass bad guy)
World of the Worlds (to a lesser extent)
Collateral

Whatever Tom Cruise is like in real life has no bearing on my enjoyment of his movies.

Also, yeah, he's a little off, but he still seems like a genuinely nice guy to me.

As an actor, I enjoy his movies. As a person, I wouldn't feel an ounce of sadness if a large poorly-constructed Haitian building fell on top of him. Other than the fact that Tobey Maguire would probably start getting all his parts. That would suck.

Loved him in TT.

Hated him in WotW but luckily I enjoyed the movie enough to ignore it.

I liked him in Collateral. Even Foxx who I don't like much either as an actor or person.

But as a person, he always seems like an arrogant douchebag most of the time. Yes most actors/celebrities are arrogant, but he has a special blend of it.

Yeah, like when he dropped about $5,000 on medical expenses for a girl he didn't know just because he saw her story at a local Dairy Queen and felt bad for her. What an ass.

Are you guys just referring to the weird scientology fixation or is there more?

You can still be arrogant and have a publicist who will show you how to be a champion of the people.

In any interview I have ever seen him in he just comes off as a special kind of jackass arrogant dbag. Maybe he is a saint, doesn't change the fact that I think I would pretty much want to punch him in the throat if I had to be around him for any length of time.

It's the Scientology thing. If you do even a token amount of reading into how those people operate, it makes your tolerance level for their celebrity poster boy drop to nil.

That and he married Katie Holmes, which by itself is fully unforgivable for me. Even all Zenu-cracked out she's still ridiculous hot.

I don't think it's his religion that pisses people off so much as his open smugness about thinking his religion makes him better than everyone else.

I don't hate him, or really care about him in any way other than enjoying some of his movies, but I think that's the point people are getting at.

Maybe Jenna Elfman because she thinks she can act? I never stated that I disliked him because of his religious beliefs. I believe only Adam has stated that is his reason. If I hated people for their religious beliefs I would hate BG and Brv and that would just suck because they are nice fella's.

Was this supposed to show people that not liking scientologists is bad, since this is such an awesome list? I'd be very happy punching pretty much anyone on that list except:

Karen Black - if she was the one who landed the plane on Family Guy.
Juliette Lewis - she's alright
Giovanni Ribisi - the shiznit

Even they are douches though, just better acting ones. The rest of it reads like a list of the people who I think are least deserving to be in any kind of public spotlight. And I didn't even know any of them (other than Travolta) were Xenu-worshippers.

Not one of these people wear it as a hat, or rather an ass hat, it's not an identity for them. Travolta is well known for it but even then he just doesn't come off as so smug about it. Cruise is too polarizing with it, coming out and basically verbally assaulting Brooke Shields for a certain type of medicine she was taking, saying what was basically completely unscientific things about depression, etc. Not to mention the very public acting like a tool on Oprah. Out of all those people, I know Travolta likes and owns a few jets, flies them all over the world, Lewis is in a shitty band, Prepon likes poker, random facts here and there, but none of them make my stomach turn a bit. Well, maybe the thought of anything but a quick beej from Kirstie Alley.

Cruises movies are mostly alright, one or two bordering brilliant but anyone who crows about how they don't give out Xmas presents, just cards that let you know a donation was made to Scientology in your name, makes me not like them. Pretty much everything about him seems impersonal, manufactured, controlled, calculated.

He used to have a publicist that he battled with all the time, but ultimately followed her advice. This was during his biggest movie star in the world days.

Then he fired her and hired his sister (or maybe "scientology sister;" do scientologists call each other brothers and sisters?) and that's when he went crazy.

So really, when his popularity was at its highest is when he was impersonal, manufactured, controlled, and calculated. He should've stuck with that game plan.

One of the big things with Scientology is getting you to admit your big life secrets and then threatening to use them against you if you ever try to leave. The whole auditing process (which is very, very big money for them) is all about hooking you up to a crappy lie detector and coaxing all your best dirt out of you. Their other tricks are forcing you to disassociate from everyone in your life (they call it "disconnecting from the SP's, SP means Suppressive Person or someone who could be dangerous to Scientology, because they've decided to think for themselves...) who isn't part of Scientology, and then telling you that if you ever try to leave the fold everyone in your life will disassociate themselves from you.

Travolta's big secret is that he's a giant queen, and obviously he wouldn't want the whole world knowing about it. Legend states that Scientology got it out of him decades ago and the whole reason he stays (and donates bags and bags of money) is to keep them quiet.

I find Tom Cruise to be worse, because it's my own belief (after doing a decent amount of reading into both him and Scientology itself over the past couple years) that he's making more money off Scientology than he is from his movie career, which makes him just as bad as (or more accurately, a big part of) Scientology leadership. He's believed to be second or third in command in the Scientology ranks.

No love for Forest Whitaker and Chick Corea?

This feels odd, being a defender of Cruise, because I'm usually not. I think he's got a very definite, limited range which can be effective. I think he's charismatic, and knows how to be a movie star.

Here's a list of directors he's worked with: Barry Levinson, Oliver Stone, Sydney Pollack, Neil Jordan (back when it mattered), Ron Howard, Cameron Crowe, Rob Reiner, Stanley Kubrick, PT Anderson, John Woo, Steven Spielberg, Robert Redford, Ben Stiller, and Bryan Singer.

I like him because he goes out of his way to work with talented people. Effort and motivation count for a lot with me. Seriously--try looking at the directors Will Smith has worked with.

All of that aside, there is no way on God's green earth I'll see Knight and Day, and I'll probably sit out MI4 as well. (I only liked the 30 or so minutes Hoffman was in).
