Overused adjectives are a sign of a faulty conclusion.

In this case it is true.

Just because the author assumes that many 'westerners' don't understand why a doctor would become a terrorist doesn't automatically mean that the doctor was RATIONAL in his decision to become a terrorist.

The conclusion that these muslims are mad at us for invading them forgets that the order of the problem is:

They do something, we react and invade, they act pissed while our own side tries its best to lose.

Not

We invade, they react, we never get 'it'

If they don't like us in Afghanistan, then they shouldn't have caused 9-11.

If they didn't like us invading Iraq the first time, then they shouldn't have ASKED us to come to their aid ( Saudis and Kuwaitis )

If they didn't like us invading Iraq the second time, then they shouldn't have been complicit in Saddam's refusal to abide by the UN rules.

So no, I don't buy the author's poorly thought out point. He is wrong completely and as such has probably been exiled to the deepest regions of the north where we send all our poor thinking pot smoking liberals nutcases...

"Obviously the genetic mulligan stew of America's great brooding middlelands provides a fair portion of our grunt quota, but just as obviously we are going to send the smartest of our true beleivers to do the really Important work."

He sounds like a real nice, humble guy.

or

For someone trying to cram as many big words into a paragraph as possible, he has pretty piss poor grammar and spelling.

or

He seems to have no idea what point he's trying to make. He paints americans as thinking the more radical muslim world is stupid. I believe he intends to make the point that americans generalize the muslim world as uneducated rather than incapable of intelligence. This is both obviously closer to the truth and the image portrayed to us by the media. I'm also pretty sure he compares american doctors who volunteer in muslim countries to terrorists as they are both well educated, well meaning people taking their beliefs to a hostile land. Aaaaand he ends by projecting his own opinions on osama bin laden, "He and his compatriots are pissed that America keeps ****ing invading other countries," something wholly innacurate if you spend any time reading up on what bin laden himself has said.

But hey, at least I read it.

For anyone wondering what the link says I will summarize it for you;

America is dumb

We just need to understand why the terrorist felt they had no other choice than to suicide bomb to kill kill women and children

America is dumb, except for the people who realize that America is dumb, we are really smart, although we can't hold a job

Did I mention America is dumb

And chronological history is dumb also

As is logic

This was the main thing I took from that article.

To address the point that (I think) the author was trying to make, I think it is reasonable to assume that people who lead productive lives have less tendency to engage in suicidal attacks. Education will tend to lead to a productive life, so therefore I would say terrorists tend to be less educated than the general population.

It is also safe to say that, just because someone is a terrorist does not imply they are dumb. Obviously, people who lack a moral compass but are smart are needed to organize terrorist groups.

As to the other point, that they are attacking us because we are there affecting the balance of power in their region, they basically repeat that with every attack, so it doesn't seem like much of a stretch to believe it.

So the question becomes, is it possible to go back and start over and have them agree to stop killing innocent women and children?

Or are we now too far down a path and thus required to see this to the end?

And I would add to those questions, is our presence there even helping, or making things worse? And what would the end look like?

All of these questions make this area a nightmare. Hopefully, we will learn and just stay out the next time we think we need to improve people who are determined to thwart our efforts.

While the message is relatively clear, the writer's prose is as turgid as any Harold Robbins gone-Gonzo wannabe-writer. I think a simpler delivery would have facilitated understanding by the mulligan stew masses, some of whom would actually agree that some of the terrorists are "smart motha fukkas". I enjoyed the article and agree that no one should be surprised that "they" had the illusion of being cave-dwellers in their bag of tricks to fool us. I also tend to agree with some of the comments that imply there is a large protion of unsurprised people, which is a relief.

That being said, I appreciate the post. Thanks, Checky!

You are asking for democrats to deny their very foundational political belief system.

'Helping people who can't help themselves' is the motivation for every governmental program they have created since FDR.

Whether they are actually helping, or the people are in need of their guidance is completely irrelevant to the actions they will and have taken.
