So, let's start things off. Often I've wondered why Nic Cage has picked so many terrible movies the past few years. After starting his career off with a bang, with raising arizona and wild at heart, and occasionally having some great performances along the way ( leaving las vegas and adaptation) for hte most part, Nick Cage is in terrible blockbuster after terrible block buster. And today I read a story, where it finally came all together. He's a degenerate shopping addict.

QUOTE
If you can dream it, Nic Cage bought it: yachts, a jet, a castle, over 50 cars, over a million dollars' worth of comic books, multiple (supposedly haunted) mansions in New Orleans, two Bahamanian islands, shrunken heads that may or may not have been human, and, famously, a $500k Lamborghini once owned by the Shah of Iran. Most amusingly, Cage spent $276,000 on a dinosaur skull in a "heated auction with Leonardo DiCaprio." And though the article has details about Cage's many pets -- claiming that he kept antidote serum on his wall for the poison of his two King Cobra

Apparently he's like 20 million in debt because of this nonsense. Obv he's been pumping out garbage to stay ahead of his bill collectors, and to keep hording more garbage.

From his IMDB biography:

Where Are They Now

(August 2007) Bought the sprawling Gray Craig estate in Middletown for $15.7 million, a purchase price that ranks among the highest ever for a home in Rhode Island.

(October 2008) He's selling the sprawling Gray Craig estate in Middletown, Rhode Island.

It still boggles my mind that there was almost a Tim Burton directed, Nic Cage starring Superman movie. I can't even fathom what that would've been like.

I can't believe that Nic Cage was in Adaptation, that role is so out of his league. To be honest, I do feel as though I would enjoy that movie even more if there were a better actor in the lead role.

I really? I thought he was great on it. So many people mock nic cage, but I think he's mock worthy because of his role choices.. I think he is a really talented actor, who's just been in some bad movies.

I think he overacts, but I still like him in certain roles. I liked Matchstick Men a lot.

I still really like the movie (Adaptation) and thought he did a good job in it, just think I might like it even more with someone else in the lead. I will be honest and admit that my opinion is based in part on the fact that his hair in that film makes me feel a bit nauseated. It was a horrible wig thing that looked like sparse ginger pubic hair.

I enjoyed Matchstick Men. Pretty sure I have cried at the ending once or twice.

I also like Face/Off, in an "its so bad its good" kinda way. I could eat a peach all day.

Man, I love face off. I think it's one of travolta's best performances, actually ( I don't rate his acting high at all, fwiw). His impression of Cage's castor troy cracks me up.

LOL @ Cage "kicking off" his career with Raising Arizona and Wild at Heart.

He was great in Valley Girl and OK in Rumble Fish long before those two.

Face Off - John Woo is pretty awesome

I thought Snake Eyes was better if only because of the multiple point of view tracking shots. That really was masterful.

Red Rock West was not bad. Sort of a mildly Coen Brothers feeling Film Noir.

I guess that could make me look a little Cage "stalkerish"!

I heard a commercial for a local hospital that claimed their drug and record tracking procedures could help avoid "situations like the one that nearly claimed the lives of Dennis Quaid's new born twins"

Seems like a pretty lousy attempt to tie in your hospital to some famous guy's near tragedy.

Your face...off.

Leaving Las Vegas was pretty good. I actually kind of like the fact that Cage does well in solid roles but totally mails it in when it comes to the shitty movies.

Random...uh...oh, I'm not so sure about the new Portman/Gylenhal (sp)/Maguire (sp) movie. It seems like they can't even figure out how to correctly market it. I bet it's a decent film (I'm not sure I buy "ANGRY TOBEY"), but my guess is it won't do so well in theaters.

I was thinking of starting a 'What tv show are you watching' thread. Does that sound like a good/bad idea? Basically a thread for random tv observations, old shows you might be watching that don't have their own thread, or some new show that you're watching, whatever.

That poor guy...from most accounts, he was actually a solid public servent. The potato thing was only half his fault, and he got KILLED for it. There are some funny quotes on his wiki page though.

Contributing greatly to the perception of Quayle's incompetence was his tendency to make public statements which were either self-contradictory ("The holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history.… No, not our nation's, but in World War II. I mean, we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century, but in this century's history."), impossible ("I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future") or confused and inappropriate, as when he addressed the United Negro College Fund, whose slogan is "A mind is a terrible thing to waste," and said, "You take the UNCF model that what a waste it is to lose one's mind or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."[13]

Shortly after Bush announced the Space Exploration Initiative, which included a manned landing on Mars, Quayle was asked his thoughts on sending humans to Mars. In his response he made a number of errors: "Mars is essentially in the same orbit [as Earth]....Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe."

I may lean towards the liberal side on most issues, but I judge politicians on an individual basis. The guy got a raw deal.

But don't think I won't always make fun of W for being an idiot. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but the dude should have known that he had no business being president. Quayle worked hard, always did well for himself and his constituents (sp), was asked to join a ticket, and answered the call. Bush failed constantly and still used daddy's influence to put him in the position to screw many millions of people. Huge difference. W deserves all the mocking he gets.

I have to say TV is on a downturn now. House, The Office, 24, Weeds, Dexter are all shells of what they once were (and some weren't really that much to begin with).

The Wire, Sopranos, and Battlestar Gallactica are no longer with us (though BG was really like that since the end of season 2). Lost is ending soon.

Combine that with movies seemingly turning out crap after crap and we're quite meh at the moment.

Thankfully we've got Sunny and 30 Rock but I can't really think of anything else that brings the quality of these two consistently (sorry Mad Men). Damages and Breaking Bad are just below those Ad Men.

I'm probably forgetting some shows but yea. That's pretty much how it is.

I have to disagree about Mad Men and Breaking bad. I think they are easily the best dramas on right now, and Mad Men is particularly great. Also Curb is great.

I've had a xmas tradition since I was about 12. Being the child of divorced parents I would shlep 350 miles every xmas vacation to see my dad and his parents. Usually by day 2 they were driving me nuts so xmas day was a day where I would spend all afternoon at the movies. See, my little podunk town only had one theatre and it only showed 1 film per weekend (1 show a night), usually movies on their 2nd or 3rd run. So, going to a large metro area with multiplexes and movies running from noon to nearly midnight was great. Usually I had no trouble spotting at least 2 or 3 movie previews for the holiday season that would instill at least an interest in shelling out exorbitant ticket prices to see them. This year, not so much.

There's The Road for which I'm hopeful. However, the ads for this flick make it seem less psychological drama and character study and more of a subdued Road Warrior. I'm hoping the ad just reflects a marketing dept that has no idea how to market this movie than a true glimpse of the film. So I'm hesitant to shell out what's got to be close to 10 bucks a ticket now in order to be massively disappointed.

Downey putting his spin on Sherlock Holmes might be alright. Honestly haven't seen much for this flick. The Dec 25th release date worries me that the studio is releasing on one of the biggest movie days of the year so they can do a quick cash grab before word of mouth spreads that it's a turd.

So it looks like I may have to figure out a new tradition for xmas this year.

Nine-hmm, a middle age man going to a musical by himself in the middle of the day. I'm not that gay.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Panassus-this is a distinct possibility. I wonder how tight a leash the studio kept on Gilliam to keep the train on the tracks though.
