After reading some of the discussion, I think I can stipulate to the fact that it was the right call for New England in this position. But I think we need to be careful in assuming or implying that this is the correct call in this situation for every team versus every other team.

Ok, honest hypothetical. A wide receiver runs a 10 yard button hook pattern. He stops at the 30, turns and jumps to catch a pass facing his QB. While in the air he almost catches it...bobbles it.....then secures it just before he is hit while still in the air. The forward momentum of the hit makes them all land at the 29. My understanding is this ball should be spotted at the 30. As high as these WRs can jump, this play happens often enough. Do they have a show where the head of NFL officiating talks about controversial calls? I think the NBA does that.

They used to have a segment on NFL Network with Mike Pereira (head of officiating) every week where he would discuss controversial calls. I think that it was more along the lines of why a penalty was called/not called than spots, but I wouldn't be surprised if they talked about that play since it is the hot topic today. I think they used to post that segment on nfl.com

Edit - Here is a link to last week's, it looks like they posted it Wednesday night:

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-tota...l-Review-Week-9

In this one they talked about Moats' fumble at the goalline and a forward progress play from the Eagles game that might be of interest to you guys. 4:35 for the McCoy play. Pretty good explanation about the forward progress issue.

Random:

I'd like a weekly show that I can DVR of Mike Pereira (VP of NFL officiating) that goes over all the important/difficult/wrong/under league review calls from the previous week.

He has one small segment on NFL Total Access and I never know when the segment is going to be on.

Is there an easier way to find this each week instead of having to scroll through a few pages of videos?

Oh for sure! Absolutely. But with an above average offense, putting to an above average offense, I think it was the right call.

So BigD says that the Colts score 60% of the time from the 29.. and CB thinks that they put it in 75% of the time after being punted to.. and they both come to the same conclusion.

Weird.

I just dont think the Pats are getting the stop there considering everything else that happened in the 4th quarter......from their own 30 or the Colts 30.

There's really no reason why I haven't spent more time at that site. Hilarious.

I particularly enjoyed this poll:

If the playoffs started today, who do you think would win it all?

Oh my God. Why would the playoffs suddenly start today? Is there a national emergency? Are we being attacked?!?!

TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW, MAN! DON'T YOU SEE LIVES ARE AT STAKE!

What should I do? Should I leave work? Hide in my basement? Drive out into the woods? I should have been prepared! Where is my duct tape?

It's definitely one of those sites that I don't think to check regularly, but always cracks me up when I do. I've also gotten out of the habit of visiting The Brushback because it went on a long hiatus, but it's good stuff, too.

Week 10 Official Review with Mike Pereira, the 4th down play is 2nd, about 30 seconds into the video.

Basically, he defends the officials saying it was a really difficult play to call, but that all the officials were where they were supposed to be and were decisive in their call. Says that if it was challenged, he does not believe it would be overturned.

I like Brett Favre. Here's a video of him being mic'd up during the Vikings-Lions game. If I was Matt Stafford I'd go right out and get a fathead of Favre to put over my bed.

This was really great. I love it when it's like 3rd and goal and Brett is getting ready to hand it off to Adrian Peterson (who scores running off the right guard.), and he looks at the Detroit line and sees a new guy in there lined up right where they are running the ball. Right before the snap, he looks right at the new guy and says, "Damn Steven, what they got you in here for?" (4:35 mark)

That is some awesome stuff.

So in overtime, Pitts was on the KC 38, forth and 5, just out of fieldgoal range. And they punt it. It's a touchback, net gain 18 yards. Nice. That's 18 yards is way better than like a 45% chance to get the first down ( and win the game). Coaches are terrible. THAT"S the kind of decision that should be mocked by sports writers, not belichick.

I don't think it's 45% to pick up 5 yards.

I'd think more like 33%. I'm not disagreeing with your point but if a team was picking up 5 yards every ~2 plays they wouldn't be in OT against the Chiefs.

yeah, i'm picking a number out of my ass obv.. but still, what ever the percentage is, it's better than an 18 yard punt

I am surprised Mike Tomlin did not go for it. He seems better than that.

Also, nothing is making me happier than watching the shit-talking Jets implode like a neutron star. 3-0 to 4-6. I guess we found another thing Rex has in common with his dad (besides being fat and having a big mouth).....they are both better as assistants.

Um Not really... It would be two teams fighting it out for history, to be considered the greatest team of all time, and beating a contender to that title to do it. Plus, those are the two teams I really want to see in the superbowl.

Well, a titans/saints superbowl would be pretty great, an undefeated team verses one that came back from 0-6 to win 13 straight games.

People in the midwest are too nice. Jopa will retire on his own terms.

Bowden (also from Wiki):

In his 34 years as the head coach at Florida State, he has had only one losing season, his first in 1976. He is the only coach in Division I-A football history to have enjoyed 14 straight seasons of 10 or more wins. His Florida State Seminoles finished an unprecedented 14 straight seasons in the top 5 of the Associated Press College Football Poll.

EJ Henderson's shattered femur in last night's game was HORRIFIC. It was way more brutal looking than Theismann's leg break. That was so sick. His leg looked like a dummy in an SNL skit.

After the announcers realized how awful it was, they only played it once, barely commenting on it. "ouch." "Yep."

Very gross. I think I remember hearing that the femur is the hardest bone in the body (and therefore the hardest to break). So, if you do break it, yikes. This guy just came back from a serious foot injury. If he comes back from this, EVER, he is a machine.

Also, I hate to say I told you so about the Vikings....but every time they play a team with a pulse they look pretty ordinary. And, AP has been pretty ordinary himself over the last month and change.

I could really care less about the Vikings in general, but I agree with you that they looked bad last night. I really like the Cardinals. Even when they lose they are fun to watch and everyone on the team seems like a such a nice guy. Also, if Warner is protected I don't think they can be stopped offensively. If you get pressure on Warner, your chances of winning are greater than 60%. If you get no pressure on Warner, your chances of winning are 0%.

I would take the Cardinals against the Colts, Saints, Patriots, etc any day of the week, if Warner wasn't being pressured.

The Colts are the Cards biggest nightmare.....a team that can score with them AND create pressure with the front four (Freeney and Mathis).

Would I be surprised to see the Saints go 16-0 and then get bounced by Arizona? Not at all. Saints are great but vulnerable.

I had no clue that the Big 12 had only 3 teams in the BCS top 25 and they are Texas at #2, OKST at #19 and Nebby at #22.

Yikes.
BigDMcGee

Nebraska may have lost the game against Texas, but I really feel like it was a "Rocky" style loss, in that in losing they will be remembered more than the winner. 20 years from now, what you're going to remember from that game is how a Defensive tackle, of all things, completely dominated the game, almost single handedly won the game for them, and played himself into Heisman consideration. Suh has to be the number 1 pick now, I've never seen a more electric interior defensive linemen in college, ever. I think he could play any position on the line, really, he's be really suited for being an end on a 3-4 defensive line.

I've been telling a Texas fan friend of mine all week that McCoy was gonna get Suh'd, and he just kinda laughed me off.. he didn't see how any way Nebraska was going to hang with Texas's talent, much less that a DT was going to make he difference.
