I only caught the end. Seems like it's gonna be pretty similar to his previous show with a few new things.

He had Kanye on (performing now with Jay Z and Rhianna). Interviewed him before the performance and it was pretty awkward.

Did he ask kanye about the VMA's thing?

Yeah. Kanye was just really quiet the entire time. Said he would like to apologize to Taylor in person.

Seemed like at one point he was about to start crying, in which case, I would have started laughing.

His performance was pretty good.

Leno went straight up and asked him "what would your mother think of that?" and there was no response for like 30 seconds, really awkward but Kanye seemed genuine

I'm sorry El G, but you're wrong here. Stomping on young girls hopes and dreams is pretty much the text book definition of cool.

Having Kanye on after that debacle deffinatly helped his ratings. 18 mill for 10pm is very impressive though. San Diego/Oakland isnt exactly a blockbuster game to be going up against.

Tom Cruise has the personality of a rock.

Nice pick having Jim Norton do a segment on occasion. Jay moves to 10 and gets edgier, Conan moves to 11:30 and gets uptight.

Do you seriously think that Jay's target audience cares about Kayne West?

Also, Jim Norton's segment was terribly unfunny.

Yes. He was the news story de jour, and he assaulted the virture of that nice, white teenage girl country singer, so I imagine his interview was a draw to many people who didn't give a damn about his music.

Listen... I hate to totally disagree with you and all... but I have seen neverending commercials for Jay's show for the last month and I haven't seen one commercial mention that Kayne was going to be on. I only ever saw them plug Seinfeld. Jay's audience, which HAS to have a median age of say 48+, would never watch MTV, let alone even know who Kayne West was. I didn't even know he was on until later in the night after football was over and it was on Drudge... and I'm in the semi-young, kind-of-up-on pop culture group. I'm not saying that it's not possible, but I just think that Kayne's appearance had minimal impact on the audience numbers. (But Jay did get really lucky that he was a guest on the first night, and probably snagged an extra 1 mil or so audience... so good for him)

Listen, I never said he caused anyone to tune in. But I think Jay's target audience would care, if they watch the news, listen to celebrity gossip sites. People may be wholely unaware of his music, but profoundly hate him, because of his comments about George Bush. After that time, he's become sort of a symbol for a great deal of white america for what's wrong with hip hop, even if they know nothing about hip hop or him. So if Jay's audience watches 24 hours news stations, any gossip media at all, or have the internet at all, then I suspect they would care. I don't know how much ( if at all) it moved the needle for the show, but that's not really the point I was making.

Fair enough. I felt like that was the topic, so I misunderstood you. I mean, the post I was responding to was clearly making the point that Kayne was the driving force of Leno's big numbers... and I totally disagree with that.
king_tanner
The big numbers are based on curiosity. I think the ratings are going to drop..... a lot. Look at the guests coming up. The show sucks and isn't good enough for 10pm. Especially when channels are going to start putting on new shows and not re-runs.

Also I saw Kanye on several commercials at least 2 weeks before the show aired. So they were plugging him.

Maybe he wasn't the driving force, but he certainly turned out to be a major contributing factor.

I think he turned out to be a major contributing factor of the general 'buzz' AFTER the show aired. Especially because Leno was a dick to bring up his dead mother. Everyone and their dog was talking about that on Tuesday.

Did you see the segment? It wasn't stand-up... figuratively OR literally. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Leno writers were heavily involved in the contents.

Jim Norton as on Tough Crowd a lot.

There was one bit where they was talking about how everything seems to always get turned into race etc.

He was sitting next to Patrice Oneal who is a black dude. Pretty big dude also.

so Norton jumps in and says..

"Yea, I mean everything is always turned into a race thing.
I was in a parking lot backing my car out of a stall and I rear ended this black guy.
He gets out and starts screaming that I hit him because he was black.
I didn't hit him because he was black...

I hit him because he was dating a white woman."

Man that was funny watching Patrice do a double take on little skin head Jim Norton telling that joke.
eYank
It was announced over a month ago that JayZ, Kanye, and Rihanna were going to be singing "Run this Town" on Jays first episode. There was not supposed to be an interview originally but Kanye wanted to apologize.

I have no doubt.

The joke was ten times funnier though because Norton has that skinny nazi look and Patrice is such a big dude, and them sitting on the same couch during the telling of the joke, and how well Norton led into it, it was the perfect storm.
