Yahoo Hockey 09 is up!

Yahoo Hockey 09 is up!

I guess we need to make some decisions on league settings before I establish the league on Yahoo, I can't remember if I can change the setup after it's created or not.

It seems like most everyone wants a two start min for goalies as opposed to the 3 start min, so we'll go with that unless I hear some objections or a better idea.

Shouldn't be a problem going with an 18 team league this season, as we've had two drops and some GM's who haven't confirmed their return yet. The league will be contracting to 18 teams this season.

We'll be going with the $20 buyin again this season, the majority seems to support that.

What am I forgetting?
serge
i love the 18 team league, as we will have more movement of players and I dont have to draft Wayne Primeau in the 10th round.

I also love the goalie rule. Its tough to get 3 goalie starts without 2 solid starters some weeks. If you have one good starter you got a good shot.

I dont know what you guys think of an idea to limit roster spots of goalies to avoid someone hoarding 5 or 6 goalies.

This way lets say we have 3 goalie maximum, it would allow for movement in case of injury.

Last year i found myself screwed when my number goalie was basically gone for the year, and I had nobody to pick from.

Just a thought.
ajs510
Maybe we agree on a 3 goalie maximum unless you have a goalie on IR, something like that?

Whatever rule changes we make are fine with me....everyone plays by the same rules anyway. smile.gif

Pretty sure, as commissioner, you can change categories up to start of season for hockey. I know you can do it for baseball
runthemover
I dont like the maximum idea. if someone wants to draft a bunch of goalies to try and get trade value for them then let him

Well with 18 teams and only a two start minimum don't think it would be an issue. I'd still like the three start min with 18 teams but I'm easy.

I would too, I think goalies are going to be very irrelevant if there are only 18 teams and only a 2 start min, we should really be doing one or the other IMO.
MapleLeafs
Personally I like the 3 start minimum. To win, you need some amount of luck, and some guys are going to be screwed with injuries. That's just the way it goes. Draft smart and you'll give yourself the best chance to succeed.

I agree with some of this, however. It makes it really demoralizing if you cant replace an injury.

Also dont think it matter if there is 18 teams or not, guys will hoard the goalies .

Just my opinion, i am ok with what Adam decides.
SBriand
The only issue with the goalies that I see is that if things get bad where a handful of teams have no shot due to injuries and no goalies out there to pick up they stop playing. Luckily that hasn't been a problem, I for one last year was screwed from the start but was moving and shaking with my roster weekly.

Maybe we should just have a league ruling that the first two rounds of the draft are "goalies only" so everyone gets their two, then we proceed as normal starting with Round 3? If we did that, the random draft order would stay intact and Ovechkin/Malkin/Crosby would still go to the same teams they would have anyway...
runthemover
eww to the above.

I think all this people who think they can get away with one goalie in a 2 start minimum league would be in for a big surprise when they start getting 2-4 points from goalie categories every week and have trouble making that up in the skater categories.

But, with 18 teams, 3 start minimum isn't horrible. we did it with 20 teams.

Ok, unless I hear a large amount of dissent by tomorrow I'll be establishing the league with no changes from last year, other than the fact that we'll be rolling 18 teams.

Does anyone have a problem with this? It has the potential for an extra 18 players from the talent pool to be removed at some point during the season, but there are 56 extras coming in with the two team contraction so I don't see it as that big of a deal.

I don't think this can really happen. Whoever picks first is going to get the best goalie and the best skater. At least how it is now you have the option to go goalie or skater. I picked 1st last year and took Ovechkin. Was it the right strategy? Obviously no, as I didn't win. This year it could be.

You're absolutely right...I didn't even think of that.
SBriand
I say leave it as is since we lose 2 teams. If it is still wonky we can do it all over again. I bet if we pull up last years topic and compare, it's pretty much all the same arguments. I think losing two teams is a good place to start. That should free up 4-5 more goalies and more skaters.
gobears
3 IR spots sounds good.

I will not be taking Brodeur this year
ajs510
Houston, we have a problem...

Yahoo seems to have changed the rules for custom leagues, so that you can only have a maximum roster size of 25 players, as opposed to the 28 players (including 3 bench spots) that we've gone with in the past.

In some ways I guess this isn't a horrible thing as there will be a deeper talent pool by 18x3=54 players in addition to the 50 players being gained by eliminating two teams, but it's definitely going to mess with the deep-league dynamic we've had going for the past few years.

Our only real options here are to accept the new rules (25 roster spot maximum, which would mean we cut back 3 spots from somewhere) or switch the league over to ESPN which has a 40 roster spot max and will easily allow our current setup.
SBriand
either way is fine with me
ajs510
Personally, I say we switch to ESPN.
serge
either way Mr commish..

Assuming its the same basic set up then go with ESPN
ajs510
I went ahead and established the league on ESPN since pretty much everyone endorsed the idea of keeping as much the same from previous years as possible. I think the combined action of dropping two teams *and* adding another 54 players to the talent pool at the same time would be too much of a major change.

Everyone invited back from last year should have an invitation email, except runthemover whose email was privatized on Yahoo. PM me for details if you're planning to return this season.

I've set the live draft up for 9:30pm EST on Wednesday, September 23rd. This isn't set in stone, but if we can all make it that day that would work out pretty well I think.

Just a guess, this won't work as the AHL draft is that night.

Yes Sep 23rd isnt good for a lot of us.

SBriand
nevermind, finally figured it out.

monday might be a problem for me, I should know in the beginning of the week if I am free.

Just FYI, invitations have been sent to all GMs from last season, to the email addy you used to register for
the Yahoo league.
runthemover
allow me to tell you a couple of things you probably already know.

you forgot the saves category. you haven't setup the playoffs like we've had them before.

also, previously we had 3F. 3W. maybe people don't care? maybe it's not possible.

Unfortunately there is no option in ESPN for a Wingers category, so I doubled up on the Forwards to compensate.

I added the Saves category, don't know how I missed that. I also dropped the GWG category for this year because it was such a luckbox category, no skill required to win that one you just had to be lucky. In it's place I went with Shots on Goal because it's more predictable. If people don't like the change or want a different category substituted in for GWG (or just want GWG back), let me know.

The playoffs are now as close to last year as I could get them, as far as I can tell there is no way to have a 2-week final series so all playoff series are 1-week.
coesillian
GWG is a luckbox category, good call adam.

I approve of SOG stat.
