The odds of it happening the first time is 50/50 (happens or it doesn't), so to have it happen two consecutive times is 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4, or 25%.

but once it's happened the first time it's already happened - which is a probability of 1 so the odds are 1 x 0.5 = 0.5 = 50/50

Yeah but it happening the first time decreases the odds of the 2nd time so it's probably closer to 33%. It's like if you flip a coin and get heads, if you flip the coin again you're statistically less likely to get heads again.
