I've heard some talk about some books being outdated.

What books would you say are outdated, and won't benefit a person eagerly wanting to learn from the beginning, or improve their poker skills?

As far as no limit goes, Professional No Limit Holdem is really good, No Limit Holdem Theory and Practice is ok. Other than that, I wouldn't bother with any poker books. You are much better off getting a membership to one of the training sites, and actively posting in forums.
