why not check/call?

Both are -EV, but it's been established that Bet/fold to a raise is less so

Basically, you're only going to get raised by the flush/boat

Unless someone knows you will do this everytime. Of course at 1/2 that won't be the case.

9 spades, 3 9's, 2 8's, JJ and TT all beat you, while most of the hands that you just rivered, ie TJ, 7T, 7J, would have raised you before now to protect.

Why wouldn't this be check/fold?

Because I bet out to represent the ace of spades and get a better hand (like three eights or possibly even a straight) to fold.

Laying down this hand at 7.5 to 1 would be incredibly weak/tight after leading this hand out all the way.

Search this forum and 2+2 for "Clarkmeister" and "Clarkmeister's Theorem" for many more details.

Result: Hero bets, MP3 folds.
