A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Albert Einstein, 1954)

I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. (Albert Einstein, 1954)
solderz
I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the kind that we experience in ourselves. Neither can I nor would I want to conceive of an individual that survives his physical death; let feeble souls, from fear or absurd egoism, cherish such thoughts. I am satisfied with the mystery of the eternity of life and with the awareness and a glimpse of the marvelous structure of the existing world, together with the devoted striving to comprehend a portion, be it ever so tiny, of the Reason that manifests itself in nature. (Albert Einstein, The World as I See It)

A man's ethical behaviour should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.
(Albert Einstein, "Religion and Science", New York Times Magazine, 9 November 1930)

It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. is an interesting question worth looking into.

It seems to me that the closest place to qualify as "woods" to the Vatican City is Villa Ada, but I doubt that the Pope ever has the opportunity to shit there. He does however, spend summers at Castel Gandolfo, which is in a foresty area near Lake Albano, and the most likely location for papal woodland defecation. I imagine that during his meditative walks around the grounds he may from time to time be compelled to move his bowels, but I would think the privacy required for such an act would not often be afforded to him for security reasons.

Tyler Durden: Shut up! Our fathers were our models for God. If our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about God?
Narrator: No, no, I... don't...
Tyler Durden: Listen to me! You have to consider the possibility that God does not like you. He never wanted you. In all probability, he hates you. This is not the worst thing that can happen.
Narrator: It isn't?
Tyler Durden: We don't need him!

For science can only ascertain what is, but not what should be, and outside of its domain value judgments of all kinds remain necessary. Religion, on the other hand, deals only with evaluations of human thought and action: it cannot justifiably speak of facts and relationships between facts. According to this interpretation the well-known conflicts between religion and science in the past must all be ascribed to a misapprehension of the situation which has been described.
For example, a conflict arises when a religious community insists on the absolute truthfulness of all statements recorded in the Bible. This means an intervention on the part of religion into the sphere of science; this is where the struggle of the Church against doctrines of Galileo and Darwin belongs. On the other hand, representatives of science have often made an attempt to arrive at fundamental judgments with respect to values and ends on the basis of scientific method, and in this way have set themselves in opposition to religion. These conflicts have all sprung from fatal errors. (Albert Einstein, 1941)

The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend personal God and avoid dogma and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description. If there is any religion that could cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism. (Albert Einstein)

Um... Ripptyde was a reg on FCP aroudn 2006ish, and got banned because he was in a some sort of flame war. He was very abrasive. He was also semi-famous on the "Flop Turn River" board, where his maniac tournament style was revolutionary at the time, as he was very aggressive and put a lot of pressure on. However, he was/is also a tilt monkey and an alcoholic, so his results aren't exactly stable. He had his PS account shut down in 2007 I think, and just got it reactivated this month. He's known as Jewdonk on NWP, and is insane, if hilarious. It's possible you played him years ago, but most likely you are aware of him from this board, as his short stint on FCP was infamous.

(keep running - run on. or: run on, run on)

I MISSED THIS - suddenly i have chills, this room of mine, so plain and uncluttered, sterile and slightly harsh... this room is suddenly full of violence of thought... quaking madness, the throws of oft-forgot suffering. suffering of so many things so many places. people who haven't got a god damned thing. people who will never know what it is like to be praised or loved or envied or respected. people who ain't got shit. all they've done wrong is get born. born in the wrong life. somehow deserving of their poverty or sickness or debilitating mental faults. i guess i can yell some more and drown it out - LIKE A MONKEY MISSES HIS WEAPON OF CHOICE WHEN HE IS AT ONCE SCORNED AND CONSTIPATED.

I MISSED THIS LIKE I MISSED THIS LIKE I MISSED THIS LIKE I MISSED THIS LIKE I MISSED THIS LIKE I MISSED THIS MORNING'S PILL THAT CORRECTS MY TEXT-MANIFESTED STUTTERING PROBLEM. (haha, as if. i'm perfect, haven't you heard?)

I MISSED THIS LIKE I MISS A BUNCH OF SHIT WORTH MISSING. OR AT LEAST WORTH MISSING SOMETIMES. ONCE IN AWHILE YOU JUST GET TO MISSING SHIT. NO MATTER THAT YOU LEFT ATTACHMENT BEHIND. YOU LIVE IN THE WORLD, SOMETIMES YOU COME DOWN INTO THE WEEDS. IN THOSE WEEDS ARE THINGS THAT CREEP INTO YOUR MIND, SNATCHING YOUR ATTENTION FROM THE MOMENT. THINGS THAT CALL YOU BACK AND WHISPER ABOUT HOW GOOD THEY WERE. CUT THAT SHIT OUT, MYRIAD THINGS. I LET THAT "MOMENT OF MISSING" PASS RIGHT THOUGH. SO NOW I don't miss anything at all.

And so now, I don't "miss" the moment. I'm in it. Riding it.

What about the guy whose religion dictates that he has the right to stone a woman to death for glancing at a man who is not her husband? I read elsewhere that an unassailable basis for irrationality is all well and good until the planes start hitting the buildings and i think that pretty well sums it up.

I agree with you regarding insults, but simply encouraging others to think critically about their most strongly held beliefs has the potential to be quite the public service. Religion is generally the sole area of discourse where people are systematically protected from having to articulate support for their positions.
