Full Version: The Max Kellerman Show Cancelled

Christ, what a bad year for radio that I like. Tony KornHeiser annouces that he's not coming back to radio until his MNF run is over, Dave Dameshek gets yanked off the air, and now is relegated to a pod cast, Adam Carolla gets canned, and now this. For those of you who don't know, Max Kellerman has a show 3 hour show in on ESPN1050 out of NYC, and it was one of the best sports talk show's I've ever heard. I didn't care, even the slightest, about New York sports teams, but despite that, he made the show interesting. He was very logic based, a fan of the Bill James-style SABR analysis, had great guests, loved hip hop. the show was at it's peak, when Brian Kenny ( of Sports Center and ESPN Boxing fame) co-hosted it. Kenny left last year, and Max really missed his foil. Then, recently, ESPN fired two of Max's producers and on-air contributers, Louie and Lumberg, and the show really started to suffer. I like max, but he was at his best when he had people to converse with, argue with, interact with. It was, at it's peak, one of the smartest sports talk shows around. So today, I check my Itunes, and I see that I have " The thundering Herd" as one of my subscriptions. WTF, I though, how the hell did that miserable hack Colin Cowherd get on my itunes? So, as I go to delete it, I see a couple Max Kellerman shows sprinkled with the Herd. Apparently, they cancelled the show on monday, replacing one of the best sports talk shows with one of the very worst. It makes me so sad. Kellerman should be replacing Cowherd, he's infinitely funnier, smarter, and an all around better show. ESPN Radio is just terribly run. There's nothing good left on it. I'm so bitter right now, I how Max lands somewhere, he's an amazing talent.

Oh shit! I just read an online rumor that Kellerman might be the new co-host with Mike Francessa ( IE of Mike and the Mad Dog Fame). Never mind, that would be way better than his old show! one time, dealer, one time.
loogie
He must be talented to continue getting radio work with a lisp.

Max's boxing commentary is pretty solid.

I'd think he would do better with the MadDog on Sirius/XM.

I would agree, except sirus is about to go the way of the do do. I doubt they can afford to hire a janator, much less more on air talent. Plus, Max is extremely new york centric, and I don't think has interest in doing a national show.

you know I haven't listened to him on the radio but I did like his boxing commentary. Also I really liked him when they started Around the Horn.

he's great. IF he starts back up with Mike, I'll let yuou know, and you should check it out. Also, Dan Lebatard's show out of miami is the best radio show around, now that Kornheiser is on hiatus.

I used to listen to Lebatard when it was a weekly show I think on Sundays, it was great. Does he still do the 10 question thing?

No. His show in miami is WAY better. He honestly talks very little sports, and talks random funny shit about 70 percent of the time. He as an extremely unconventional way of looking at sports, and at having a radio show. His show is on Itunes, and it has the complete show, without commercials. Or, if you want to listen live

The Rihanna banner in your sig is SO awesome. I can't decide which is funnier... the claim that she's a 117 or the "Can you beat her?".

If you get a chance, read some Jason Whitlock columns. He is on Fox or MSN now. Fox I think. And he always rail on ESPN, talking about how bad they are now, because of how they run their anchors like they are in Nazi Germany, nobody can speak out against anything to do with the network, and worse, they are so in bed with the NCAA, BCS, NBA, MLB and the NFL, that it's starting to hurt the product. It's an interesting take, and dead accurate if you ask me. Bill Simmons touches on it as well, but you can tell that he as way more to say about it and it should be interesting if he ever leaves ESPN.

I don't have the time to listen to sports radio, but I've heard that Lebetard is fantastic. I LOVE him when he fills in on PTI. I would also imagine Kornheiser is solid on radio, but I think he does his best work opposite Wilbon.

yeah, I listen to Lebatard when I'm on my computer. You should down load it to your itune,s just to check it out. I love Kornheiser on PTI, but I really love him even more on the radio, it's just the best. I really think he's the best sports talk show hosts, I think Lebatard and Kellerman both are highly influenced by him.

RE: Espn. I actually used to be a really active contributer on The Dave Dameshek message board, having followed it over from it's branching off of The Adam Carolla Message board ( whom Dave used to be the sports guy for). So, from the moment Dave landed his ESPN LA radio gig, I was listening and contributing on the message board. Well, after the scott van pelt fiasco, Dave Dameshek had to get rid of his best and signature bit, " The Jerk List". The Jerk list is basically where he rounds up all the creeps of the week, slams them, and then blasts them with a Han Solo edition blaster. It's really funny, because he acts inappropriately angry and over the top. Well, he had to get rid of it, because ESPN didn't allow "personal attacks " ( even though dave's bit is clearly comedy and absurd.). So, I commented on the message board (which is not owned by ESPN, or Run by dave) that i thought it was insane the way ESPN is cracking down on the content of their radio shows, and if they were going to censor Dave like this, that it bodes ill for his show. So, Dave apparently is so paranoid about what ESPN thinks, that he had the moderators delete my thread, and edit any post I made that was at all critical of espn. That was really insane, that he has to so fear for his job, that not only can he not speak out against their policies, but he can't let a random due on a message board that is in no way affliated with ESPN talk bad about them either? Well, that pissed me off, and I left the message board in a huff, because I won't stand of that kind of censorship, where you can't say something critical about the product or ESPN. And I also don't really listen to Dave's show anymore, because what ESPN has done to it makes it toothless and shitty.

I listened to Max every day on the way to work 2 summers ago when he first got on the air. He was amazing, especially the way he analyzed the yankees.

yeah, I imagine if you're a yanks fan he's just the best thing ever. He's completely biased, but he also makes strong ( or at least interesting) and logical arguments about Yankee issues, and doesn't trott out the same ole tired cliches.

he made fun of Bud Selig, and his apperance, and because ESPN has a huge MLB contract, they suspended him from the radio show for a couple weeks, and everyone in espn radio is running scared, and dulling down their shows even more.

right, that's what I was alluding to when referencing the Jason Whitlock columns. He's been railing on this exact point for a while. ESPN is supposed to objectively cover sports, but now that they are in bed with all of them, they don't criticize and overlook their glaring flaws. It's sad.

Here is some of what I was talking about. Try to ignore his Ball State homerism. Some of it's done tongue in cheek. But read this.

exactly, he backed up every argument with facts and numbers. Any time something big for the Yankees happened id listen to the online stream. Did they say who will fill his place?

well, they were adding colin cowherd to the station * cringes*, and had planned on cutting max's show to 1 hour, so he asked out of his contract. What they are doing with that hour I dunno, probably absorbing it with another show.
