I have never played a dvd on my computer before but the other day I wanted to watch something so I popped in a dvd and I got this message from Window media player

Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

I tried searching for a decoder but it looks like I have to pay for one. I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3. Is there any way to get the decoder? I went on windows help page and they had these things about seeing if my windows was validated which I am not too sure but I believe it is.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
B

He's right, even though he's brand new. VLC rules all.

okay so I went to that site you said downloaded it and when I restarted my computer and popped the dvd in I got this message

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

I totally don't know what the hell that means.

Sounds like you just need drivers...I'm not in a state to describe the solution to you, but go to device manager and try to update your drivers.

it sounds like there are forces at work that do not want you to watch that movie

Don't be scared, im a good guy smile.gif

Start vlc, clicl ctrl+d a menu should open there look for "volume" it must be on right from file, there u can select dvd and browse for the drive where the dvd is.

OR

You could try just to dragp&drop the whole directory of the dvd to opened vlc.
