These have probably been answered before but I just got the Dark Knight and watched it again and had a couple questions.
1) Why does the Joker tell 2 different stories of how he got his scars? (One story was the his father did it then the other had to do with his wife or something)
2) Why does the Joker put a canister that looks like a grenade of sorts into Barry Pepper's mouth at the end of the first scene? Why does it just smoke and not blow up?

To drive home the idea that there isn't some sad back story that explain his madness...he's just fucking insane and loves it that way. I thought that was one of the best parts of the movie.

Speedz answered the first question and I tend to agree with his second answer as well. At first I thought the canisters were filled with Joker's signature laughing gas, but there wasn't much indication of that. I ended up concluding that the canisters were just his idea of a joke. Sort of like, "Wouldn't it be funny to make them think they're gonna blow up, but then just have those grenade-looking things be harmless?"
