No idea how this has no thread, but the first full length US trailer was released this morning.

Originally slated to be released this friday, it was pushed back to be the 2009 warner brothers summer cash cow both beause the dark knight made WB way more money than it needed this year and the ordinary production cycle of movies leaves next summer comparatively empty thanks to the writers strike.

I took my brother along as cover when I went to see the last two. But he's out grown it and I might have to go solo, which would be pretty embarassing.

this is far from a kids movie as much or more than the books were far from kids books by the time you got to the 6th and 7th.

I've seen some of this as they were working on it when I workin on another film - some of it looks cool, Ginny's still an absolute troll tho - they dont even give her a decent haircut.

The concept artwork for the inferi was stunning, if they manage to make them look the same it'll be awesome

It's one of the only important things they don't "sneak peak" closely in the trailers. i'm hoping it's because they want to save the shock of that visual for the theatre. With the quality of the rest of what they're showing, i'm very excited for the imax.

The concept stuff for the teleporting thing they do (wtf is that called, can'y remember??) - looked near identical to what you see in the trailer, so i really hope so

I hope they do a better job with the giants this time, I didn't get to see any of that

I was going to ask who was playing Professor Umbridge, but then I realized that I was thinking of the last movie.

So Im basically saying that I have nothing to contribute to this thread.

Were they apparating when they were fighting in the Hall of Prophecies at the end of The Order of the Phoenix? They turned into smoke then reappeared across the room. I thought that you couldn't apparate in the Ministry of Magic.

you cant apparate into and out of the ministry. but i guess you can apparate from spot to spot once inside.

although technically i dont think they fought like that in the book. it may have just been a stylistic choice by the effects team/director to enhance the movie.

I know I posted about this before, but I saw a screening of this last week.

I've seen it, and really enjoyed it. I'll probably go see it again, after it opens this week. Some things were cut, for clarity, brevity, and because they weren't particularly cinematic. (It's very difficult to film a character silently reflecting, without making him look like a tool, or addle pated.)

This movie made me excited to see the next two, since the last three films of the series have the same director.

I'm excited for this one, especially since I hated the story line in the 5th book/movie.

I know they are going to cut a lot since this one was a long book. I just remember the main points though, so it shouldn't be a big deal to me.

I saw this over the weekend, and I liked it. It's tough to rank a movie where I know not only this story but the sequel. So about all it can be rated on is how well they told it, and I'd say it was a success. The cinematography is spectacular, and some of the scenes were almost exactly as I pictured them as I read the book.

The scene with Ron under the effects of a potion is almost worth the ticket price just by itself.

If I had a complaint it's that it doesn't seem to carry the momentum very well, it sort of stops and starts. But this is a minor complaint in an epic tale. Overall it's a spectacle, really a beautiful movie to watch.
king_tanner
I liked it. Professor Slughorn was awesome.

One thing I didn't like: The ending fight scene sucked.

I whited the spoiler part out because my spoiler alert button isn't working for some reason

Another thing I didn't like was how the theater were going nuts at parts that were not that funny. I wanted to yell shutup at everyone.

They didn't want to include the fight scene @ the end of this movie because they felt it'd be to similar to the end of the last movie.

was it just me or did they leave a whole lot of the story out in favor of showing teenagers making out?

They definitely left out big chunks of the story, but that was inevitable. Good movies have just the right give-and-take between getting to know the characters and advancing the plot. I'm not sure they got it exactly right, I could've used a bit less of the romance on this one, but it was not so over the top that I felt it detracted seriously. I think, though, your comment is what I was referring to above when I talked about the movie losing the momentum.

I enjoyed it, however I think Daniel Radcliffe got acted off the screen by everyone he shared a scene with. Draco Malfoy and Hermione were particularly good in this movie.
SuitedAces21
if i'm writing the film i leave out the girl ron dated before hermione and the guy ginny dated before harry. no need for that in a two hour movie. just get the romance in with the main love stories, everyone already knows how it ends up anyways.

voldemort should have made an appearance somewhere, doing something.

Then there would be no arc. Sheesh. Basic Storytelling 101. Lesson 1: Conflict.

i would arc them in another way. a way that doesnt waste everyones time. a way that wins me an oscar.

i thought that was implied.

quick thoughts: give dumbledore and harry more time together. really sell that connection. its been two long since i read the book, but there has to have been something else to focus on.

That makes sense... seems like they could have still done a tad bit better.... but still makes sense.

Another thing that was weird is how they just jump into story lines without explaining anything. For example: Fenrir Greyback's character all of a sudden shows up without any explanation. People do go see the movies when they haven't read the books (especially parents.)

Yeah, that was the one thing I hated. I didn't understand the whole modern London scene in the beginning. A friend of mine told me the whole reason behind it. Also, they left out a bunch of scenes:

The original script included all of Dumbledore's memories about Voldemort as outlined in the source novel, but the director insisted on trimming them down as, according to Steve Kloves, "..he wanted to showcase Voldemort's rise without getting overly involved with his past as Riddle."

horrible decision. those memories were the best part of the movie. they had a good vs. evil movie and left out most of the evil.

I'd rather my movies have nothing much happen where people don't change or have epiphanies and nothing is resolved. you know...more of a reflection of the real world

Yeah every character has its own back story. In the book it explains how they got to be "death eaters," and how Voldemort recruited them. There is a story with everyone in the Order of the Phoenix who was at Ron's house before it burned down also. We are supposed to know about them though since they sort of explained what was going on in the last movie.

They really are good books even though they aren't very complex. Especially the last 2.

He's a good example of a minor character that really couldn't be properly introduced because of time constraints. So the choices are to leave him out altogether or to put him in and assume that most of the audience will recognize him from the books. Disappoint the readers or annoy the non-readers. Doesn't seem like a tough decision.

Bleh. It was ok.

Draco made the movie for me by stepping on Daniels face.

Saw it last night and it was so much better than Order that it got me excited about the story again. Keep in mind I never read past the 2nd book though.

I am about to begin reading prisoner though and should finish them all before the next movie I hope.
dapokerbum
Just finished reading the book again. Going to see this in IMAX on sunday.

EDIT: Saw this on Sunday and I guess I shouldn't have read the book so close to seeing the film. I was immediately angered about how things were soooooooooooooooooo different than the book. However, after about 25 minutes of hating it, I finally decided to just watch it for the movie that it was. I honestly can't figure out how anyone that didn't read the book would like the movie. It seems like a boring movie from that perspective. However having read the book, I liked how some scenes were done and it brought to life the images from my mind.

A few things to rant on 1. The book has Dumbledore first meeting Harry at the Dursleys and there is a good exchange between Dumbledore and Vernon. 2. The book had Tonks getting Harry off the Train at hogwarts NOT Luna. 3. Harry was expected at the Burrow. 4. What happened to the wedding between Fleur and Bill? 5. The scene where the Weasleys house was burned down WAS NOT EVEN IN THE BOOK!

Spoiler doesn't seem to work, so I just used white text.
