Nice draw.

I played a bit of play money badugi last week and I was honestly surprised at how often the winning hand was a badugi hand. I thought it would be a lot tougher to hit a badugi hand than that. In the session I played it was incredibly rare for there to be a showdown between 3-card hands (or worse).
Shark527
I also played my first session today in a play money SNG. It took me about 10 hands to fully grasp what the drawing was for. I think it's a refreshing twist on the draw games, using a lowball with suits.

In your hand though, I would have kept the 7diamond and drawn for the low spade. Would anybody else follow that approach or drawn two? I figure if you are playing the hand that you are keeping any Ace or wheel cards in your hand and drawing off that?
MovingIn
Typically the winning hands I see are a Badugi, usually a 10 or lower... to the point where I'm surprised when a 3-card drags a pot.

Like triple draw, you usually only want to draw in the first place when you're a card away. Seems that a lot of players have caught on to this.

IIRC if you initially catch 3 cards to a Badugi, you're a ~45-50% shot to make it by the final draw.

imo, the trick to this game is getting value from your 3 card draws from people drawing to 78q. time well tell though how it will play for real money.

I haven't been able to find badugi math anywhere. This doesn't sound very good, though. Unless you're dealt a badugi, you're only 45-50% to hit if you're dealt the next best hand (3-card badugi)?
MovingIn
Indeed. At a full table, though, that means the chances of seeing a Badugi shown down are fairly strong.
jmbreslin
So you really want to drive your 3-card draws hard to narrow the field.

that was my approach. worked good until everyone gave up playing and i just let second highest raise everyone out and took 2nd. lol

fun game tho.... mixed tuesdays?
antistuff
they're not 3 card draws. they are 3 card hands. a23 is like having two pair or a set sort of. do not think of them as draws. they win at showdown. bet them for value.

I have a question about the original post.. isn't keeping the 3 card A37 better than going for a 2 card a3?

you know, ive been wondering about exactly this sort of thing.

in this situation i think its obvious you should be keeping the seven.

however, whats about if it was an 8, or a 9.

hu a ten even seems ok to me if you have position, but how about two opponents, three, etc....

i am thinking there are not exactly hard and fast rules to this, and it depends not only on how many opponents you have but also on how badly they play. the idea of weaker hands going up in value as a function of how bad your opponents are seems magnified in this game.

how can u play 8 handed Badugi? Surely cards will run out in some hands?

(yeah, I know, seems like a noob question, but I wanna know anyway)

this is true of loose games, not of tighter ones.

the discards are shuffled into a new draw pile if necessary. same with triple draw.

If you think about it it does make sense. Lets say you are initially deal As2d3cKs. You would of course draw 1, discarding the Ks. There are now 48 unknown cards left in the deck. Only 10 of those will give you a Badugi(4h-Kh)

So that is a 38/48 chance, that you will receive a card that doesn't help. Like the 5d for example.

So you draw again, discarding the 5d. Now there are 47 unknown cards, again only 10 of those help you. Thus, you now have a 37/47 chance of unimproving.

On the next, and final, draw you will have a 36/46 of unimproving and being stuck with a 3 card hand.

38/48 x 37/47 x 36/46 = 50616/103776 or .487743 = 48.7%

So even if you start out with As2d3c you will only improve to a Badugi(4-card hand) about 51.3% of the time.

My math my be wrong, but I think I have somewhat the right idea

without checking the math, you're approaching it properly.

but it doesn't matter since that's not how you're supposed to think about the game, and it'll lead you to lose TONS of value smile.gif
