I sometimes have a hard time leaving my right wing radar behind when I go to a movie, and sometimes it ruins the movie for me.
I get pretty annoyed when left wing actors/movie people try to slam the right in subtle ways all while making a movie that much more likely supports the right's worldview
This movie wasn't one of them, at least not badly. I counted only 3 times they interjected the "America is a clod" lines that had no reason to be in the movie at all.
For the most part the movie is based on the 'been done before' premise that a deep cover guy with only one handler, is suddenly alone when his handler gets whacked.
The typical lack of understanding how a man who's killed quite a few people shouldn't spend half the movie depressed over a few people getting killed never seems to sink into Hollywood. It's their own fault, Dirty Harry and Lethal Weapon have taught us that good guys kill bad guys and it doesn't effect them at all. It just doesn't compute to connect with a guy that used to kill people, then goes deep undercover with the bad guys, to act like violence is abhorant to him. Like Dicrapilo in the Departed, 1 year after being deep inside a gang cant' handle the sight of blood.
But the overall movie was pretty good. The 'twist' at the end was kind of weak, but I found myself enjoying the direction the movie took.
It must really suck for a leftist actor though to make a movie reminding us that there is still a group of people out there that wants to kill our children just to make a point. I wonder if after watching the dailys they still go out and talk about how we need the UN to help in Darur they ever think how stupid they are? Doubt it.
I give the move a B+
