Anyone ever had custom shoes made?

I've been a dedicated Mephisto man since I bought a 2 pairs at a garage sale for $10 ea and they lasted me for like 4 years of intense use. The originals are pretty much shot now and my preferred style has been discontinued in my size.

I'm thinking about having a pair of shoes custom made.
A friend of mine purchased a pair from a cobbler in Romania that crafts them to your exact specifications for €120.00.

Anyone know any domestic outfits that still make shoes one pair at a time fitted to the customers feet? My friend swears that the method he used worked perfectly (he sent the cobbler a series of measurements, pics of his feet photoshopped with measurement data, etc) but if there's a domestic guy who does it in person, I think I may prefer that route.

I have an entire team of 8 year old Chinese kids at my disposal whenever I need new shoes.

I bought a $300 pair of Mephisto's when I was having back problems because I was desparate for any solution, but the sole cracked and they squeaked when I walked within a year. Very disappointed.

I dont know anything about having shoes made. My opinion: I would probably opt to pay more for a shoe from a known quality shoemaker. Just because its handmade doesnt make it good and you can get a great fit elsewhere.
