I have always wanted to learn an asian language, and although mandarin is much more widely spoken, I feel as though japanese would be easier and japanese girls are cute.

so you see my dilema

With the way China is growing some say we will all be speaking Chinese. So I chose Japanese.

I took one year of Mandarin my freshmen year of High School. It's basically all about memorizing characters. It wasn't too bad. I ended the year with a B and I can now hold my own in China with things like "where's the bathroom" "nearest hotel" and general tourist shit like that.

I tried learning mandarin last year by buyin a english/mandarin dictionary and then randomly saying chinese shit to my co-workers who are from china.

if they understoof, i considered it success.. i know like 3 things.

so i think a class is needed

I don't know much about Japanese, but I took Mandarin in school and it's kind of easy. It's very hard to read and write, but speaking it is easy because they use common sense in their words. For example, to say monday, you say the number 1 followed by day and tuesday is the number 2 followed by day...

Well if we're going off of the hotness factor of the women don't overlook thai. Plus it would be nice to know how to ask for a 13 year old in their native tounge when you visit.

I'd go with Mandarin more people speak it than any languge in the world and you can find it in chinese retaraunts all over the world, I learned a bit of Mongolian a few years back for work, that is an uber bizaro language, they switched to the Russian letters sometime durring Soviet domination but they don't pronouce the letters in order.

I voted Japanese just because it seems like such a classy language. My Vietnamese isn't getting much better after 7 years of marriage but I surprise myself sometimes with things I understand. Good luck.

Having taken classes in 6 foreign languages and owning about 80 different dictionaries and textbooks, I can say that it's really not. If you don't come from a tonal language background, Mandarin is quite a pain actually. (Also recognize that English is probably one of the harder non-tonal languages.) That said, I'm still interested in improving my ability to say more than Ni Hao and XiaXia.

Royal, if you want an easy second language, go with Spanish or Italian. Your best bet on "easy" Asian languages will be Japanese. There are a number of free podcasts that helped me learn about 30 different phrases in a couple of weeks.

I am fluent in french, and know some spanish. I want to learn japanese or a chinese language because i want to move to an asian country for a bit. dont ask why

I think that I'd prefer to live in Japan over China based on modernity. That said, the cost-of-living and population density are likely quite a bit higher.

I'm on my third year of Japanese. I voted for it, but it's a high tier language (like English) which makes it fairly difficult to learn. It definitely takes much longer to become fluent in the language, compared to something like Spanish which I smote in 5 years.

It's so wierd that you would say that. My friend was in the "Singaporean" army, and he mentioned that they trained with the Israelis and specifically that their women were really hot.

Anyway, still think you should go with Japanese. Other than hot Japanese girls, Japan just seems like a really cool place to live.

Its because (my correct theory) all their parents come from different countries, cultures. All Jews around the world came there, so you meet girls who's mother was moroccan and her father was russian for example dad australian mother polish etc so they have a cleaner gene pool. Unlike in Ireland were we are all basically cousins.

Learn Korean so you can haggle at the rub 'n tug.

I lived in Japan for just over two years teaching english (PM me if you want info on this) and its not hard to get a girl there. I learned some Japanese, enough to get by, but I wouldn't say I am fluent.

If you just want to learn a language to pick up the chicks, guess what, you don't have to learn either. They will probably know enough for you to get by. Once I was at this girls house in Japan and the "conversation" I had at a went like this:

Her: "Lorne"
Me : "ya"
Her: "Condom?"
Me: "ya"

For long term life/job practical reasons, Mandarin is the way to go.

Now I have a Chinese girlfriend for over a year now. She speaks both Madarin and Cantonese. I can speak a few words, most of which are the names of food and whatever else I get her to teach me, but it seems to be much tougher than Japanese.
