Doesnt have to be good, would like it to be really cheap. Just need it for the pokers, the aim, and the internet. I would like it to have a 17"+ screen and good resolution preferably. I obv found a couple on Dell like this but they were pretty expensive and I dont know anything about computers so would appreciate if any of you knew any good deals out there.
Thanks

anyone know anything about these new "studio" laptops on dell?
JubilantLankyLad
Monday, July 28th, 2008, 1:36 PM
that is almost exactly what i just got, except i got Vista Business, integrated bluetooth, and 3gb of RAM. I really like the laptop, except for 1.5 things:
1 - the media control keys are just touch-sensitive areas on the keyboard bezel, not actual buttons, so you have to look and make sure you're pressing the exact right spot, and you can't 'hold it down' to repeat the action, on the volume control for example.
1.5 - there is no mute key in the media control 'buttons'

sorry, that's not the same laptop i got. but i'd watch for those comments anyways.
i find you usually get a better deal getting the small business/vostro version, but they aren't as pretty.

I work at Geek Squad in Best Buy. 1100 seems a bit much to spend if the only real requirement is a 17" screen. BB routinely has 17" notebooks in the $800-$900 range. Not trying to pimp for Best Buy (trust me), but if you only need it for such basic tasks, I might take a look at the weekly ad, you can find some steals.

Yeah...paying attention to everything. You're probably right here. Good point. Nice xkcd in the sig, by the way.

Seems that Compaq aren't great either, but not sure about the newer ones nowadays.
You can usually find some good deals on Toshiba. Never had one, but haven't heard anything really bad about them.
Just get as much memory as you can afford.

See if any of these guys are nearby:
http://www.microcenter.com/If not, call them, they'll help. The problem with Dell is they want to sell you the latest everything, and most people don't need that. If you want a reliable but cheaper system, Dell doesn't care about you. Microcenter has PCs for every budget. My experience with them lately was a shining example of computer buying. I went to the store (here in MN) and told them what I would use it for and any requirements I had, and they instantly knew the cheapest one to fit my needs -- and it was $1200 LESS than the cheapest one that met my needs from Dell.

You should consider a hp, they make some nice laptops at reasonable prices. You can even find coupon codes online that knock off 25-30%. I recently bought one for under a 1000 with the following specs:
Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.50GHz
4GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS (256Mb)
...
...
And so on..too lazy to look up the rest of the specs
Anyway, it runs A LOT faster than my desktop, which I barely use now.
