Since the old thread is 1.5 yrs old, I decided to make a new one I can get credit for.

Does anyone else participate much?

I got into it last year, but this year I got into it much more. I got my 1st hole in one last week, on a 251 footer using a Sidewinder.

Today I hit chain/top-of-basket on two holes. (I Frolfed 63 holes today over 3 diff courses)

Anyone else got good stories? What are you all throwing these days?

Discuss.

I havent played Disc Golf in at least 16 years when one of my schools had a course on campus, I went camping this summer and the KOA site said Disc Golf so I thought that would be fun for me, the wife, and the 5 year old but got to the site and the disc golf was about shoulder height in brush and had rattlesnakes written all over it. So they went swimming and I drank alot of beer. Either way I was going to drink beer but at least I had a few without the effort of carrying them.

One of my roomates and a few friends play all the time, and I wonder why they wouldnt just go out a hit the $hit out of a ball instead. I mean you can still drink and smoke on a golf course, which is more than half the reason they go. But hey i went a couple times and it was chill, just never got into it. I think one of them got a hole in one last week, he was stoked about something.

I've been playing a little as of late. I bought a $20 disc and I only use it. Is it worth buying a putter also? Anywanys, I play on what I think is a hard course. I've only played it twice, but every hole is a par 2 and they are all between 300 and 400 feet. I am really bad at frolf and I got 16 over par, which was good for me. However, I lost my disc on my first shot on the second hole so I had to use someone else's from then on.

Are there any tips how to frolf better? Because I throw very hard and they don't go far or straight, and by the tenth hole my arm is killing me.
savagerebel
I play pretty often at the only course in town. I use a Star Valkry for driving and a Blo-Fly for putting. I got an ace once on a 275 ft hole with a stupid tree about 25 feet from the tee box directly in line with the hole.
FARGOpokerND
Putters help sosososo much, definitely worth it. If you want to go to make it easier on yourself, get a Putter and a Mid-range disc as well.

What was the disc you were throwing that you lost? Discs are designed to be overstable and understable. If you are right-handed and throw across your body (a normal throw causing it to tail left) then an overstable disc would cause your throw to exaggerate the flip to the left if you were to throw it straight. If you throw an understable disc straight, it will have a tendency to tail to the right, before flipping over and tailing back left (like an s-curve)

If you want tips to throw straighter, come straight across your body. Imaging bringing the disc to your left shoulder and then coming across at almost a downward angle. That should have it come off the hand flatter.

Mid-rangers are great discs because they obv don't go as far, and are much easier to point and throw. Mine usually go from 180-220 ft (versus my driver which I can toss ~350 at the max). I recommend any Buzz disc by Disccraft.

Putters float making them lose distance but increase control a ton. Good for 50 ft and less.

Every Sunday we have the 9:30 tee time at a local course and play 36. We have 4 fairly solid courses within 40 minutes of here and 3 others that are good for a change up.

I only play with 4 discs and that seems to do just fine for me. I use a Champion Valkyrie, Shark, Stingray, and an Aviar.

Just like real golf (and I am pretty decent) I am SOOOO amazed at how good the really good players are. I usually shoot just a couple over par, but when they have tournaments here the really good players score like it's Tiger Woods '02. I have played in one tourney and although everyone was pretty laid back, they do take their shit pretty serious.

I've played pretty much every course in GA and a couple in central FL. One of the ones in Florida was weird. Weaving through and across a real golf course..including fairways and ponds. One hole you had to throw over about 200 feet of water and the pin was right on the other side of the pond. Oh, did I mention there were alligators in all of the ponds and waterways? So sick.
dapokerbum
We used to disc all the time! I have about 15 discs that I carry with me when I play. I probably couldn't use them like I used to, but there were the really broken in ones that you knew would turn hard right and some newer ones that you could keep on a straight edge all the way to the basket and you always have to have at least one roller....and ALWAYS a putter.

Our home course was 19 holes and all the holes were par 3's. The really good guys can shoot 10 - 15 under. The best I ever did was 12 under, but the last time I went I shot a 3 over, so I guess I'm not as good as I used to be.

One tip for throwing straighter - pretend like you are smacking a midget and try to get some snap at the end of the throw.
bigkg
I play sometimes. I only throw hammers (straight over hand) because I play a lot of ultimate and throwing backhand or forehand in frolf messes up my ultimate throwing. I can usually throw it ~300 ft consistently and dead straight.

Obviously, I'm not very good.
showstopper24
I'm a righty. When I throw it, I kind of throw it side-arm, so I start off with my right hand on my right side, and I end it at my left shoulder. Is throwing it across your body better, like how you would just throw a regular frisbee?
dapokerbum
When you throw it side arm you want to really snap it at the end.

Also, how many people really call it "Frolf" and not "Disc"? I guess maybe it is a California thing ... but we NEVER called it Frolf.

I've never even heard of it being called 'disc'. I've only heard of 'frolf' in Cleveland, or 'disc golf' when explaining what frolf is.

This is the first I have heard of frolf. Think I will stick with the DG.

Shorty. 215 ft. But I had to split about a 5 foot gap between trees at both ~20ft from tee and ~150 ft from tee.

What disc did you use. For those kind of throws I have been using my Buzzz, which has been awesome.

My only hole in one was a 260ft shot that had to go hard left around a few trees with my Orc.

So true. My friend got one first and I tried a nice straightforward 200yd shot between some trees and hit the chains. So I immediately bought one the next day.

Man all this talk about discing ... I might actually have to start playing regularly again. I always carry my disc bag in my truck, just in case I get the urge.
dapokerbum
So I have officially taken up the game again. We are Disc Golfing every saturday now at 7am, so we can get out early and get in 2 rounds. The first couple of times I was shooting 5 - 8 over par, but the last two rounds I had were even par and 1 under. I bought a new champion sidewinder and champion spider to add to my bag. The first throw I had with the spider hit the chains on a short 215 footer, so that was a good way to get it warmed up. I still only have the one Ace to my name, but hopefully now that I am getting my throw back in shape I might just get another one day.

Anybody else still playing?

I've been playing every thursday now for the past few weeks. I only use a regular frisbee though, GotSprung bought a set and he creamed me this past week. I will definately have to get a putter for sure. I really do like using my frisbee though for long range, my accuracy is supurb but I do have trouble getting enough lift whenever I throw it.

You use an actual Whamo Frisbee?

Learn how to grip and throw an actual disc golf disc and you'll be amazed at how much your distance and accuracy improves.

Oh, and a putter's only good if you practice a fair amount. Unlike golf, laying up isn't usually the best shot, imo. Meaning, some players like to toss the putter disc intending to drop it into the bottom of the chains and use the basket to catch the disc. I think it's more important to make a straight shot into the middle of the chains and don't worry about leaving yourself 6-12' long if you miss everything. Obviously the course and conditions can have an effect on this approach, but bad habits are hard to break and learning the right way up front will let you improve more quickly.

I carried 8 discs in my bag when I played almost daily. These were sufficient for my 5 regular courses.
dapokerbum
I agree with all of this. Especially if you are going to become a disc golf player, you have to have the right tools. Buy yourself a driver, I usually suggest a Valkyrie for newbies, and start learning the proper throw. It is 70% different from a regular frisbee type throw. A lot of disc golf players actually cross over from Ultimate, so having a strong frisbee throw will help ... but you still need to learn the technique for disc. There are plenty of videos and such on you tube to get you started.

Going to drive up to Huntington this weekend and try that course as well as La Mirada. Should be a good time.

Yes disc golf is a really fun game, and a great way to meet lots of col people. I have played many times, and own a few discs. There is a nice 18 hole course in Grass Valley, CA where I used to live, and the course in SF is awsome also. Glad to hear that other shredders play disc.

Sweet!

Do you know how much sets cost (along with bags and whatnot)? And where I can find them? Sprung got his set at Big5 and it seemed like a generic set (about $20 total). Do you think a very basic generic set would be a good way to go to start out?

Also I'm looking on ebay for the Valkyrie drivers, they have many different weights...is there anyone that's that best in particular?

I don't know about "sets" as here in San Diego, there are two courses and both of them have a "pro shop" where they have tons of discs for sale as well as bags and anything else you may need. As far as weights it depends on how hard you throw and how windy it is. Generally you want more weight for windier conditions. If I had to recommend I would just go with a 172 - 175. Right now my driver of choice is a 172 Star SL, but before that I had a 170 Champion BEAST.

Played four rounds over two days on Thanksgiving and the friday after. Shot a +3, +4, +5 and +2.

Haven't quite got back to old form as I used to shoot under par every round at this course. Feeling good about it though and I am starting to get back some old shots and am loving it.
dapokerbum
Played four rounds at four different courses on Sunday in the greater LA area.

Shot a +5, +6, +2, and +5

My driver of choice has moved back to my Champion Beast. I am hoping to add a Champion Wraith to my bag over the holidays but I need to make sure that no one got it for me first. After that I will give it a good test and see if it will over take the Beast. I was using my Star SL the past three rounds but for some reason on Sunday I couldn't get the shot shape correct the first 4 times I threw it so I went back to the Beast and it performed admirably.

Go into DG big this year but will not be going back out until the Spring at this point. -20 and a foot of snow is not conducive to DG. At the peak of this year I was going almost daily and my lowest score was +3. I've been throwing a beat up old Valkyrie on drives but it has gotten to the point that it is so destroyed and taco'd I can't even begin to predict it's flightpath. Will be looking for a new driver and possibly a different mid range when it starts to warm up.
dapokerbum
Wow, so for Christmas I got 6 new discs. I didn't get the Champion Wraith like I wanted but I did add the Star Coyote, Champion Leapard, Discraft XL, KC Pro Aviar, Champion Boss, and a DX Wraith.

Thoughts on these discs (I will be using a ten point scale for my scores):

Star Coyote - a nice midrange disc that is slightly understable. Score = 5

Champion Leopard - awesome fairway driver that can turn either way. Score = 10

Discraft XL - Great driver that will basically stay straight until it lands. Score = 9

KC Pro Aviar - was told this was a good putter and they weren't lying. Score = 10

Champion Boss - This disc is a little too much for me to handle right now. It has the highest speed rating INNOVA gives out but I don't have the arm to fully give it justice. Score = 3 (but only cause I am too weak to throw it)

DX Wraith - I really like the Champion Wraith because it is a great overstable driver, however the DX is an understable driver which took me by surprise. it will be nice for those throws, but I usually prefer sidearm. Score = 6

This was based on Two Rounds of playing with these discs. I will be playing another 2 rounds this weekend ... hopefully up in the LA area as that was a good time.

I own the Champion Leopard and the Champion Boss. Both very nice discs. Took me awhile with the Boss too, so just keep practicing with it and you'll see improvement.

Played up in LA this weekend. Played three rounds at two different courses. Shot +4, +5, and +3

Wasn't really feeling the Champion Boss, so I let my friend try it out. He liked it better than I did so I let him keep it in his bag for now. Was alternating between the Champion Beast and Discraft XL as my driver of choice during the rounds. I am still loving the Beast as my main driver, but that XL is awesome as well. Has a nice stable flight and just barely fades off at the end.
dapokerbum
Was back to it this weekend after a few weeks of not playing. I finally picked up the Champion Wraith that I have been wanting. Got a 172. It works just I imagined it would and I had it in play for most of the day. On the front nine I was +1, but then I had a few bad holes and ended the day +5. Had a great birdie on the 18th. The basket was about 30 feet away on a small incline and I hit it dead center in the chains. Was super stoked after that shot. Didn't have enough time to shoot another round, but hopefully will get back out there next weekend.
FARGOpokerND
I hate you all for being able to throw in the Winter.

dapokerbum
Just set up a course in your house. You know throw down the hall and try to make it into your dresser***

So I played on Monday. NOT a good day by any means. I think I ended up +10!!!! I had a triple bogey on one hole that was just a disaster and played a few others just terrible. I also lost my brand new Champion Wraith in a tree. I am hoping that it gets windy soon and it will drop out and someone will turn it into the Pro Shop ... but that was super lame. Missed three putts inside 15 feet ... one of those was for birdie. I was really hoping to have an under par round by now. Oh well, I can only hope that I play better next round.

My roomate owns two baskets...We have one set up in the living room all winter. We live in a pretty spacious apartment and when we set it up in the corner, we have a 25' putt from one side of kitchen and a 35' putt from other side of kitchen.

Just the other day I threw about 200 putts and it felt good to throw a lot.

We like to play DiscGolf HORSE. Should see some of our trick shots now haha.

Just isn't the same as letting them rip for a long drive though.

That is still kinda awesome. But yeah you're right, nothing really compares to letting it rip on a long drive. But at least you won't be making putting mistakes when the games begin again ... in 3 months smile.gif

Didn't get to play this weekend, but I may try to sneak in a round before work sometime this week.

Snuck out this morning before work. Didn't quite get the result I was looking for as I shot an 8 over. I am still making a bunch of small mistakes that add up. I did borrow a basket from a friend so I am hoping to at least improve my putting.

Yes. The course I play has only three holes that they can make over 400ft ... with one placement at 450 (but that is rarely used) but even when it is there we still play it as a par 3.

There is a course in LA that has a hole that is a Legit par 4 as it is 600ft.
FARGOpokerND
Ah that is somewhat short. One of the courses in Fargo, its 18th hole is 552' buried in trees and its a par 3, and I have seen a whole 3 pars on it in my life.

Another course has 2 over 450' but both are wide open so par isn't that tough.

There are alternate tees on both that I have yet to try (I have no clue where they even are, they only set them up on league night)

That seems on the long end of the spectrum for a par 3, although not out of range. An average player should be able to at least throw 300. I know when I get on one I can reach about 350, but to keep it straight and on line is a different story. I tend to think that any hole that you have to have two Legit drives to get to the hole should be considered a par 4 ... which I guess would draw the line at about 600.

Either way that 18th sounds like a beast and if I am ever headed up your way I'll give you a pm so I can find the course and see how well I do!
GWCGWC
I've only played on courses that scored all holes as par 3's. I thought that was in the accepted national disc federation rules but I'm way too lazy to look it up.

There's a hole in OKC that's super long but wide open and a little uphill. I used a roller to get max distance then use a driver to hopefully get close enough to have a long putt for par. This was one of those holes where one over was pretty much a given and double bogeys are more common than anything else.

Not sure about that but it depends on how you define this from the PDGA definitions:

Par: As determined by the director, the score an expert disc golfer would be expected to make on a given hole. Par means errorless play under ordinary weather conditions, allowing two close range throws to hole-out.

Can you give a list of courses in the SD area? I will be staying there this Sun-Thurs probably and if my group decides they want to go disc golf, we will be going (we already are planning on going in Vegas the few days prior to SD)
