If a player is offered a contract the GMs take it personally..

This is just dumb.

It sucks because it prevents a long term deal for Bernier.

the size of the offer essentially guaranteed that st. louis would match, so all it really did was screw the blues out of any chance to determine what the length of his re-sign would be. vancouver had to know this going in...

and offer sheet can't be countered with a multi-year deal? Can an offer sheet be longer than 1 season?

backes' offer sheet was for three years with $1M signing bonus. not sure about the first question, though.

Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think an offer sheet can be countered. Essentially, an offer sheet is a contract to a restricted free agent and only the original team then has the right to agree to those terms, or take draft picks.

Vanek's offer sheet from Edmonton was 7 years and Dustin Penner's was 5. I think.

right, I don't see it like the blues saying "don't attempt to steal our players." both parties knew that a player wasn't going to change teams as a result of the offer sheets. I think the blues were just unhappy that vancouver went with the offer sheet while the blues could have been working on a longer or shorter deal with him. it's flat-out unnecessary and does nothing to improve vancouver's position.

I think you people were a little hasty to call JD stupid.. it's a message that needed to be sent.
