If you are going to have a guy like A-Rod on there, Tiger Woods? WTF. He's probably the most dominating athlete in his sport currently. Tiger being excluded is a farce, even if it is golf.

What? No pro bowlers?

Tiger Woods isn't in there because golfers aren't considered "athletes'.
MICHAEL ANDRETTI is considered one of the most dominant Indy car drivers ever.... also not on the list...not considered an athlete.

And Prince Fielder is arguably one of the best baseball players, but he does not belong on the list either; do you see why?

Being successful at your sport does not necessarily make you a great athlete.

One of the most successful golfers ever... second among active players and is 13th on the all-time wins list.

Athlete? Not so much... lol

Again, that has nothing to do with Tiger.

Babe Ruth has the 3rd most HRs ever and was not athletic looking, but that doesn't disqualify any baseball player from the list.

Try again, with a little more effort this time please. I expect your best trolling, not this weak attempt...
James D
Actually, Tiger Woods should be on this list. Don't worry, I fully understand that it's top ten 'athletes'... but look at their criteria:

1 - speed; vision and reflex - not too sure on speed, but he has exceptional vision and reflex.

2 - stamina and recovery - played the last 5 years after undergoing operations, and obv look at his latest US open win.. amazing.

3 - coordination and flexibility - goes without saying.

4 - power, strength and size - same as above for power (he may not be as strong as an NFL player, but I'd bet he's stronger than Federer, Liu Xiang and Ronaldinho).

5 - success and competitiveness - goes without saying.

6 - records held and victories based on the sport's popularity - so... it's clear to me he should most definately be on the list. Since when is hurdling a popular sport?

It's not about how you look.... the key word is athlete! Are you ready to present any evidence that would lead anyone to believe Babe Ruth was an athlete?

Yes, I'm always stoned.

You forgot the part where you posted a picture of Phil to make some sort of point about Tiger. Your points that Phil and Babe Ruth aren't athletes (I'd beg to differ with Ruth but trying to explain that to you seems like a painful endeavor at best) have nothing to do with Tiger.

I agree about the golf/athlete argument. The only reason I brought it up is that baseball can easily be compared to golf. Both sports take a ton of skill and don't require a lot of cardio, comparing them to other major pro sports. I just found it odd that leaving a guy off a list that is so far ahead of his nearest competition is odd.

Yeah this is true. James' breakdown of the criteria they set forth makes it seem pretty obvious he should have been included, regardless of some people's preconceived notions about golfers.

PMJ you are correct in this...Hollywood seriously???

Tiger should be #1 though...you ask anyone that really knows him (MJ, Smoltz, etc) and they say that he is a phenomenal athlete overall....it really isn't just golf.

I'd replace Nadal with Federer imo. On an "athlete" basis and the criteria mentioned he wins handsdown.

I don't know about any of the American athletes but I wouldn't add a golfer even as amazing as Tiger is. I really don't think a golfer can be compared as an athlete properly to anyone else on the list. Floyd Mayweather vs Tiger Woods for athletic ability?

And yes Hollywood is a ridiculous stain that should be avoided but hes so retarded its hard not to laugh about him openly and lol at his new "friend" who goes around defending his every post

this is kind of a pointless exercise as the list is shaped almost entirely by the criteria. If it is just by who is the most athletic than this list sucks. Federer should be gone. Ditto Arod, Ronaldo and Crosby. They should be replaced by decathletes and two sport college stars. Only Lebron would stay because he is an athletic freak AND a great basketball player. If the list is not solely driven by athleticism then leaving off Tiger is petarded. The guy just won the US Open on one leg and is the biggest star in sports.

So yeah, the WSJ should stick to writing incorrect things about politics and finance and leave sports to others.

Yeah the criteria was pretty messed up, and it's like they wanted to get at least one NFL/NBA/MLB player on there. I can think of quite a few baseball players that I'd consider to be superior athletes to Arod (Jose Reyes being the first name that comes to mind, then of course, Benji Molina).

Is petarded a combo of PETA and retarded? smile.gif

nah just from a Family Guy episode where they learn Peter is technically mentally handicapped.

although I like your explanation better.
CBass1724
It's hard to compare athletic ability in different sports. It's hard to compare Roger Federer to LBJ because each cannot do what the other does.

Who would win in a game of 1 on 1 basketball with Floyd Mayweather and Sid the kid? What if they had a foot race? What if they swam a mile? Impossible to tell because because those particular skill sets don't show up in the sports they are best at.

While Tiger is a phenominal athlete, his skill sets are limited in golf because he swings a golf club. There is no running, hitting people, or juke moves on the course. But I do believe Tiger would be a top athlete if he chose a different sport like baseball and would have excelled no matter what he chose.

Having said that, I do believe Phil belongs on this list. You must be absolutely the best athlete ever and hardest worker of all time to get rid of those sausage titties that he used to have.
BigLebowski
I would be willing to bet a very large sum of money Tiger beats 6 of those "athletes" in a decathlon or a made up 10 sport gauge. Leaving him off the list is tragic.

If they don't put Tiger on there because golf is not a sport how the hell could they put Federer on there? Yeah, running back and forth in a 15 foot box is super athletic compared to walking close to 5 miles of hills each day. And I play plenty of both tennis and golf.

And for God's sake, a MLB player is an athlete? Give me a break.

Bottom line, based on the criteria provided it is obvious Tiger should be on the list. What happens when Mayweather gets embarrassed in his own sport by an MMA specialist when he fights Anderson Silva?

decathlon events:
* 100 metres
* long jump
* shot put
* high jump
* 400 metres
* 110 metre hurdles
* discus
* pole vault
* javelin
* 1500 metres

1. Roman Sebrle, decathlete-only on a really really good day obv
2. LeBron James, NBA---would be very competitive
3. Floyd Mayweather, boxer--EASILY BEAT
4. LaDainian Tomlinson, NFL--again, would be very competitive
5. Roger Federer, tennis--EASILY
6. Sidney Crosby, NHL---EASILY
7. Lu Xiang, 110m hurdler----EASILY win strength events
8. Jeremy Wariner, 400m sprinter---i actually think TW would be competitive here winning the strength events
9. Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, soccer/football (wherever you live smile.gif )----Ronaldo would win 400 and 1500 and that's it
10. Alex Rodriguez, MLB---EASILY

People under estimate TW's abilities simply because he plays golf. He benches over 300, can easily stand flat foot under the hoop and dunk a basketball, and has some of the strongest legs around. I wouldn't count him out in the runs even against James, Tomlinson, and Ronaldo. I do not know anyone on that list that hates to lose more than Tiger. His mental toughness from that would be such a huge factor in an event like this.
