looks like this got pushed back to September 10th/11th. How fitting if the world were to end on 9/11 ?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/09/08/lhc.collider/index.html

Fears have emerged that the collider could produce black holes that could suck up anything around them -- including the whole Earth. Such fears prompted legal actions in the U.S. and Europe to halt the operation of the Large Hadron Collider, alleging safety concerns regarding black holes and other phenomena that could theoretically emerge.

Although physicists acknowledge that the collider could, in theory, create small black holes, they say they do not pose any risk. A study released Friday by CERN scientists explains that any black hole created would be tiny, and would not have enough energy to stick around very long before dissolving.

The holes that should be produced are not going to suck up the whole earth. The blackholes would be very small.

QUOTE
The crucial point is this: The black holes that could be produced by the LHC would be very, very small objects. Now, the black hole absorbs matter that gets in its way, right? If you assume that the black hole only eats whatever falls into its trajectory, you find out that it would take a nearly infinite amount of time before it could do any damage to earth. It just cannot grow fast enough, because it’s too small.

10 September: the LHC’s first circulating beam

On 10 September, a first beam of protons will circulate in the LHC. The first moments in the life of the LHC will be an exciting time for the CERN staff, and will be captured by more than 250 media organizations from all over the world.

The first injection of the beam into the machine will be between 9:00 and 10:00 a. m. At 9:15 the LHC project leader, Lyn Evans, will give a brief explanation of the day’s proceedings in French followed by some words from Robert Aymar, CERN Director general.

The CERN personnel are invited to follow the first beam day events, which will be shown in the following rooms around CERN:

All day:
Council Chamber, Main Auditorium, IT Auditorium, AB Auditorium Prévessin, Conference Room 40-S2-A01, Conference Room 40-S2-C01.

Afternoon:
AB Auditorium Meyrin, AT Auditorium.

Please note that the event will also be webcast but, given the limited number of connections, this option is intended for use of the public outside CERN. CERN personnel are encouraged to follow the event from the conference rooms.

I realize the risk of black holes is small, but CERN should probably have one of these on hand just in case.

Will the world be ending this month? I kind of need to know, because I don't have rent, and I'm starting to worry.

I just hope CERN has plenty of chicken wire and duct tape on hand in case something goes wrong.

Sure you can, you just won't have much of a microwave afterwards.

Or a house.

Something I just thought of is this... Any scientist who thinks that this will destroy Earth should really just keep their mouths shut.

Because, if and when it doesn't, then they're wrong... instantly. Career in jeopardy, and cannot be relied on again to give correct scientific advice.

If it does, then they're dead anyway, and arn't around to take the credit for their opinions.

Dumb, imo.

REPENT! REPENT SINNERS!!!!

There are two kinds of "End of the World" nutjobs:

1. Those who panic and/or race to church to repent.
2. Those who realize they don't have to pay the mortgage at the end of the month, they've always wanted to try Louis XIII cognac, and the licqour store is still open.

lly, we'll pay you a yet-to-be-determined sum of money if during the webcast-- as they press the shiny red button-- you put in a voice-over of, "oh shit, a blackhole" and cut the feed for 5 seconds, then come back online & say, "just kidding."

No, this month they're not actually having collisions, they're just taking beam and firing it around the pipes in one direction. Next month they're going to make it go around in both directions and make the two directions hit each other. That's when things go down.

Unfortunately, it'll take about a year of data taking and months of analysis to actually confirm whether or not the Higgs was seen by the detector. It's not something that you can look at and say, "Oh, there it is."

I don't think there was ever a webcast, I they meant that they were sending out the images of collisions as they were coming in. I don't think there's video of a bunch of scientists standing around and looking at screens.

Well, it was from CNN, I thought maybe they'd just taken a picture of some people here in the US watching it remotely, to save money.

And by the way, those first pictures from the collider? Obviously done in MS Paint. They could've at least made them look realistic. For a zillion billion dollars, we want something that at least *looks* real.

They never built anything in that hole in the ground, did they? It's just a big open bar rave room for physicists, isn't it?
chrozzo
Did they film that scene in Terminator 3 in that tunnel?

or another supercollider?
