When I first heard that the CBC was not going to renew the contract they had with the owner of the song I was disapointed. That song is awesome, it was my ringtone for a while, and it's a canadian legacy.

Luckily CTV stepped in and bought the rights and now TSN and RDS can air it. I couldn't be happier with the outcome.

The song is a Canadian tradition..I listened to it with my grandfather before Leafs games on Saturday nights...Its associated with CBC and it was so weird today when they played it on TSN...Whats next Don Cherry and Ron Mclean will do Coach's Corner on TSN??

This is bullshit

i would agree with this were it not for....

1. some of the crap CBC DOES spend their money on

2. the fact that NHL hockey is the one thing on CBC that actually makes a profit

It is not a disgrace to be honest. Honesty is a great quality.

Anyone else think it's smacks of bad taste for TSN to buy this?

A bit (they were a bit opportunistic) -- but only really if they turn around and license it to the CBC again!

Yes, I do.
If you listen to CBC's version of the story, it wasn't "saved" by TSN, but instead outbid for by TSN.

Not sure what Im going to think when the music starts off a Wednesday night tilt of Colorado vs Detroit.

I think its in bad taste totally...CBC and Hockey Night in Canada are an institution in this country....The fans are the ones that get screwed...

Similar thing happened with BJ Birdy a few years back...The Jays didnt own his rights, and he wanted too much money, so we lose a 25 year old Toronto icon...

I am a big fan of TSN , but I think this is very opportunistic and not right.

What the hell does that have to do with it???

I think it's amusing that you're upset that an organization with the finances to do so, is willing to outbid for a certain...asset that other organizations are either unable or unwilling to compete for. Yet you have no issues with the Leafs being able to out-bid almost every other team for free-agents, and jacking up the price so that other teams in the league are unable to realistically compete. To me, that seems "very opportunistic and not right" as well.

The two have nothing to do with each other..The issue at hand is the theme of Hockey Night in Canada is a Canadian tradition..Nothing to do with outbidding each other.

If I'm not mistaken, TSN is canadian as well, so it isn't like Canada lost their tradition. Not that that's the main point, though. You said earlier that it's wrong that TSN stepped in with the money and bought the rights. CBC wasn't able or was unwilling to put up the money to retain them. You even drew a comparison to BJ Birdy, a guy with higher financial demands than his current employers were willing to pay. He was essentially a free agent who signed with another organization. As there's no restrictions on a mazimum salary he was able to receive (or any restriction on how much $ could be used to buy the rights to the HNIC song), he can go to whoever throws the most at him. It's capitalism, Serge. You seem to believe that this exact scenario is best for your Toronto Maple Leafs, and that survival of the fittest should be the way to go. Whoever is willing to spend it, should earn the rewards, right? Now why is that suddenly not the case whenever you're on the wrong end of it?

The comparisons are not really fair IMO...HNIC is a CBC tradition, and I am assuming you arent one of us who grew up watching Hockey on Saturday nights and listening to that song....I still think its an irrelevant comparison...But argue it as you wish...

I bet you , you would argue with me if I said that the NHL plays its games on ice.

By the way - that was a rhetorical question. I already know the answer.

That reminds me of a joke I heard last week on Last Comic Standing:

How are the Toronto Maple Leafs like the Titanic?

They both look good until they hit the ice.

The more I think about it the more I really don't care about theme songs. Maybe CBC should use the old theme song to Mr. Dressup. Now that's a Canadian tradition.

Only if we can get someone to do a Bob Homme impression to introduce Ron McLean and Don Cherry.
