Can a case be made for checking flop and calling any shove or CR all-in? Or should I just shove preflop?

I think checking and calling any shove, reraising allin is ok too.

Sometimes, villain will check behind with a big ace and hit a pair on turn.

There's also a good chance I shove on villain preflop.

Assuming he's not to laggy, you can probably restrict his range to perhaps 88+, AK, AQ, but this might be a bit generous with the pairs. If his range is TT+, AKs, AK, AQs, AQ then you're dominated by 4 hands and a coinflip fav over 4 others. He'll definitely call your PF push since he'll be getting 2-1 odds, so you have zero FE. Thus, I like the stop-n-go move here to try to pick up more FE on the flop - he is at least slightly more likely to fold his overcard combos on the flop than he is PF. The only risk is BB coming along for the ride when you flat call, but I think the raise is large enough to make that unlikely.

You're pretty short. I don't really see him showing up with a monster pair after his 4x raise. Usually they want more action and it looks more like a big stack pushing around a table with a hand that he wants to play but not one he wants to bet for value.

Calling and shoving any dry, low flop is a good option.
