OK, wife is getting offered a huge promotion at work to move to San Diego. We live in Fort Wayne, Indiana now, she's originally from San Jose (until she was 10) and I was born in San Diego but moved when I was 1. We have 2 kids, haven't started school yet. We know it's more expensive to live out there, especially housing, but after doing research, her raise alone will give us more than enough for a house payment. So financially it's no problem, and I can get a job anywhere pretty easily with my education (Masters in Civil Engineer, licensed in 10 states).

Anyway, how is the style of living in San Deigo? I know there's a lot to do, just wondering if it's a decent place for a family. We would probably live outside the city, maybe like Carlsbad or something. Just wanting to get some advice from people who live there.

Oh yeah, 4.5 hour drive to Vegas is a BIG plus in my book, along with Harrah's Rincon right there as well.

If you believe in god, spend a few hours thanking him for this gift. If not, just give your wife some great sexing to thank her for being good at her job.

San Diego is as close to perfection as it gets.

GREAT time to sell in Indiana and buy in San Diego. Housing market hasnt fell that much in Indiana, but has dropped dramatically in California.

Yeah, my wife kicks a$$ at her job, she's moving into a position at 30 where the person who held it before her was 46. She's the shizznit fo' sho'.

Her work is going to buy our house, we built it 7 years ago for 145K, they are going to buy it from us for 195K.

Keep in mind the fact that you're going to be in a less desirable home that will cost 3 times that amount. But the surroundings make up for it.

Get the hell out of Fort Wayne immediately.

My roommate and best friend is from Fort Wayne. Whenever people ask where he's from he answers "The Big City...you know, Fort Wayne". Because of this (and many, many other things) I now have an intense hate for Fort Wayne (the big city).

why would you want to leave indiana?

Just to clarify, I'm not the idiot in the story. I'm the idiot who read the story and laughed at it. A lot.

This is so true. I moved out here to go to school from Hawaii at 20 years old and I have not left yet. The city is awesome. It is close to so many things. If you move to carlsbad, right up the street is Oceans 11 card room which is great. As DNA said the housing market is terrible right now so you can find some great deals. I wish I would of waited a couple more years to buy, but oh well it's good for people right now that want to get in ... if they can get the financing.

Really there is no downside unless you are going to be driving to the city everyday, because the commute from carlsbad sucks...but if your wife is going to be doing the driving then i guess that won't bother you smile.gif

Good luck with the move!!

I live in San Diego, and I imagine the style of living is about as drastically different as can be in "Fort Wayne". Great weather, great food, snobby people, etc. Also, you might want to stay away from Harrah's Rincon, its populated by hicks, old grumpy Asians, and gardeners. Plus, its out in the middle of BFE. If you like playing poker there's a great 5-5-10 NL game at Oceans 11 in Oceanside, I'll warm you up a seat. Congratulations on your wife's promotion out of hell.

The condo market on the North County Coast (where you most want to live) is very very soft.

Be sure that whatever you choose to do, you have 3 hours a day to go to the gym so your wife remains convinced you're worth it.
Also get good at motorboatin'.

FWIW, I live in nocal, I love it up here. San Diego is one of the few places in this country I would consider moving my immediate family to.

California Coast to Coast is the best state in the Union IMO. If I were to ever move it would be to Nor Cal !

Dude, I just got my house robbed today, stay away from College Area, El Cajon, Chula Vista, Mira Mesa... FUUUUUUUCKKK!

All they took was my PS3 about 10 games and the microphone for Rockband. I have a f.u.cking 42" plasma and a 36" right next to it. Still there. XBox 360 and all the games and controllers still there. My new synthesizer sitting right there with a big ass amp. Still there....

The thing that pisses me off most though is I just got GTA 4 on Wednesday. Gone.... icon_frown.gif

Poker is good though around here. I've been killing it lately playing 1/3NL and 2/5NL.

So today I went and bought this:

11 days and it's mine!

I went to San Diego when I was 9. It was pretty awesome, the weather is perfect, the city is really chill and the whole atmosphere is mellow and fun and I liked it. I could totally dig living in San Diego. That's my advice.

Thanks for all the advice guys, wife is meeting with her boss on Monday to get all the details, so we should be making a decision soon. Fort Wayne isn't really bad, but it will be a totally different lifestyle out there for sure. I need to lose about 15 more pounds before we leave, lol. Are there any other card rooms besides Oceans 11 out there that are decent?

Palomar Club on El Cajon Blvd is okay, but there are three casinos that are very close and have decent games spread.

Barona, Sycuan, and Viejas.

There is also harrah's which is closer if you move to North County.

If you want the highest limit action and best poker room outside of LA in Southern California, play at Oceans 11. Pechanga is up in Temecula, Harrah's in Valley Center, Barona in Lakeside spreads a 2-5 1k max, and is trying to start offering 8-16, Sycuan is dead, Lucky Lady, the Palomar Club. The Palomar Club was spreading 10-20 uncapped NL a while back but I'm not sure if they spread that game anymore. The Village Club in Chula Vista is a dump, in the ghetto, but spreads a good O8 game. I've played at Harrah's in VC when they had the "Big Game" going which is really rare except on Fridays/Saturdays and its a capped 300-500 game. Otherwise its 3/6 LHE and capped 1/2 NLHE.

Yeah, what happened to Sycuan ... it used to be a really good poker room. I went there to watch the masters and play some poker and there was only 1 table of 2/3 NLHE with a max buy in of $200 and then there was a 3/6 game going. Where did all the players migrate to? I played at Palomar Club a few weeks later and that place is crazy, the 1/2 game had players calling $25 raises PF like it was nothing ... which is nice when you are running goot!

How is Oceans? I played there once about 4 years ago and wasn't that impressed. Have they changed the layout?
